I've been using DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink for a while, and at first got great results, but have started having problems just the past few months: when I play the burned disk back, towards the end of the movie it seems to "catch"- it will freeze, and sometimes keep going after a second, or sometimes skip to the end of the movie or the menu. The problem is not as bad when I play the movie on my computer instead of my DVD player, but still exists. Just in the past week I've also started having a new problem: the movie will play on my computer although the motion is jerky throughout the movie, and when I put it into the DVD player I get "DVD_R _/_ No suppported files found". I was using Fujifilm blank disks, which were fine for a while; I tried switching to Sony but it hasn't made a difference. Any ideas?

It sounds like a media problem. Use DVD Identifier to see who made your discs, you didn't say + or -, 4x or 8x etc.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...
Also what speed are you burning at? The faster you burn the greater the chance for errors

If it's a media problem, why would it happen with two different brands? Also, I hadn't changed the blank discs I was using when the problem started. I was using Fujifilm DVD+R 1x-8x, burning at 8x, and also tried Sony DVD+R 1x-8x. I tried decreasing the burning speed to 1x, and it didn't make a difference.

...in which case we need more details; here's a start -

download Nero info-tool from here - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/neroinfo.html

Run it, note down the following, and paste here. Here's what mine shows -

click on the drive tab, note down the firmware version

click on configuration tab, note down the DMA fields, ie on or off

it may be worth clicking on the aspi tab, and note down anything that might be missing

You could have tried 10 brands but they all could have come from the same manufacturer. Thats why I asked you to use DVD Identifier.

How was I supposed to know this? You said you changed from Fuji to Sony

Details man, need more details

I tried burning again at 1x, and this time it worked, but now DVD Shrink isn't letting me select the burn speed- why is this?

Okay, I'm not computer-savvy enough to paste the information from Nero InfoTool, but under the drive tab it has DVD+-R/RW recorder, firmware version 0054, buffer size 2MB, read and write speed both 8.0x. Under configuration, it has Primary IDE Channel Master ST340016A DMA on, Secondary IDE Channel Master LITE-ON LTR-24102M DMA on Autorun on, Slave DVDRW IDE1008 DMA off Autorun on. Under ASPI there's nothing, and is says ASPI is not installed. I don't know what any of this means.

Ppower: maybe I wasn't clear- the problem started while I was still using Fuji discs, which is why I tried switching to Sony, and switching didn't make a difference.

So you're saying you think the problem is probably that I have a crappy DVD drive? Is there a way I can know for sure if this is the problem? What brands would you recommend?
Also, would it help to decrease the burn speed, and how do I get DVD Shrink to let me do this?

it would appear these drives aren't the best. however it's what you've got (not expecting you to ditch it, unless of course you want to lol), so that's why i posted the pictorial stuff up further up the post, as we can only really work from that to start with...

You were using Fuji 8x, those are Taiyo Yuden, so it can not be the media. This only leaves a software or hardware problem. Did you by chance install any other burning software?

here ya go if you want to post your own pictures - i do this the same way, but i copy/pasted this from one of the moderators' posts -

Step 1: push ctrl + PrintScreen (above the insert button)

Step 2: Open paint .. click start -> programs -> accessories -> paint

Step 3: push ctrl + v

Step 4: crop your image. I crop what I want to show -> cut it -> open new -> paste it. Crop only what you want to keep

Step 5: save as jpeg

Step 6: Host the jpeg here: http://imageshack.us/

Is this because you need additional information from Nero InfoTool? This is all kinda over my head. I tried opening Nero InfoTool and pressing Ctrl + PrintScreen, and as far as I could tell nothing happened. Is paint a program? If so, I don't think I have it.

Click on Start for Windows desktop. Goto programs. Find Accessories. Find Paint. Click on paint. If you've got Microsoft Operating System then you've got paint. It comes with it. Go back up this page and re-read the postings slowly. They've posted everything you need to assist you. There's enough of us here. We'll stick with you until your problem is solved.

you do have paint!, paint is as standard as windows gets :)

between us guys we're after media info to see if you have the wrong/or crap discs, and i myself am trying to make sure all the basics are setup correctly, as the media is just a part of the overall picture

@minouche - according to picture in your first link, the drive is only a CD Burner, not a DVD Burner. Do another screenshot of your DVD burner, you can use nerotool to do this, just go the drive icon and click on the dropdown box at top left corner. Then we can see the version of firmware for that drive.

However i can see in the 2nd image you posted, your DVD Burner is an 'IDE1008' drive, and DMA is off for that drive. First of all try this to sort out the DMA issue - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/DMA.html

Once that is done, i have recently been reading (not very good) things about this particular drive, see here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/193674

However this is the drive you have so we need to check all the other stuff to get you up to date.

As for your 3rd picture you posted, download ASPI 4.71 from here - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm and run it to install ASPI drivers. PS I'm still not 100% whether ASPI is needed in XP, a guy on another thread doesn't think it's needed. However no matter how many times i read up on it, i'm still none the wiser. I've always installed it and it doesn't make things worse, plus i never read about installing it making problems so that's good enough for me.

ps if you want to edit your post that has the 3 picture links, you can show them on here just be adding at the end. But you need to do it in lowercase (i've used uppercase just to show you what to do. Or easier still, edit the post and then look further up the page and there are tips there for doing this, and bold or quote text etc..

i'd ask you to install a program to check the dvd discs you've been using but as you're using more than one make i think we'll leave that 'til after you've got this stuff up to date
