Umm not meaning to jump in and break up the 'recruiting' creaky and kivory have going but how does everyone feel regarding the news of DVD Decrypter being shutdown. Will it affect consumer buying of blank media? Cheaper blank media but lower quality? I preferred not to start a new topic since ty and verb are used for backups and I think this is a related question. When the next level of css protection comes up will tys still be the brand of choice or will a new media and css bypass takeover. Forgive but this whole not being able to copy my personal dvds (at least one) is making me mad.

* I wonder if kivory and creaky are still selling hats n tees promoting their favorite media by the local pub :)

to burn or not to burn that is the question

I am just hoping those people in Antigua, not to name any names, keep up their work or we will all be up a creek when new encryptions come out. But it is like everything else the beauty of DVDDecrypter is that it worked well and was free, enabling a lot of people to backup, other programs will come along and replace it, but people will have to pay. As for the media you can't replace what is good, and people will keep buying. My two cents :~)

@arniebear,

I hope they leave them alone (Antigua)as well. Somehow I think they were after the author of decrypter for awhile but the whole star wars fiasco gave them the edge to proceed and order lightning uk to cease updates. As far as media ty has been the best media (fastest burned as well at 16x with no skips or pixelation, skips) but i was speculating at the prospect of the movie industry coming out with a format that is larger than the currrent capacity of blank media. Of course I'm sure blank media manufacturers will create a bigger dvd eventually but will it be cost effective as just buying the original from your local store. xcopy platinum had high hopes only to be shot down once folks started 'announcing' renting and copying as well as bootleggers. Even though I haven't been on AD for long I do alot of searches and see alot of threads regarding media and backing up movies. Also the occasional 'will I get caught by blockbuster if'. Simply put we all need to wait to see the next generation of encryption and how much will we have to pay for software to backup our store bought originals.

I own a DVD recorder and have gotten a PPV movie and recorded it to DVD, also numerous TV shows, this market is growing so the demand for good media will continue. As for the movie industry they keep trying to change, but technology advances faster than they can.

as for star wars, that workprint is supposed to be leaked from the inside, but all we'll still hear from the industry is that the public is to blame, or P2P (and the public) is to blame, blah blah blah.
Greed, greed and more greed. Just to stop us backing up our own personal discs that we pay a lot of money for. Grrrr....

thank god for quality TY (and Verb) media and hopefully we will see less crap media as time goes on (a blatant attempt to bring myself back on topic) :)

@aabbccdd,

just keep your plextor on automatic, if the change is necessary, it will do it automatically, if not, in the case with dvd-r, your burn will not be affected~ :)

@creaky

sorry to hear you've had your 1st BAD experience with TY...as strange as it might sound, it DOES happen once in awhile~ my wife's family's player spit out a TY for me too a few months back, while it plays PERFECTLY on my standalones~ it happens to even the best of us~ NO media out there is 100% perfect ALL the time~ :)

@matt

i am very saddened by the announcement of DVD Decrypter being shut down, but i too agree with arniebear that people will continue to use what is considered "good" media, they just need to find an alternative software to use now once the encryption becomes tougher and tougher. i currently use AnyDVD, which has worked wonders for me, but, eventually, i think they are NEXT on the list of the aforementioned company doing the "shutting down". only time will tell, but in the meantime, look on the bright side, DVD Decrypter STILL works, just no more future updates..make the most of this great program while it is still effective~ :)

re the TY, yeah, i just thought oh no what's going on. They seem to work fine for other machines so i'll persevere with them for a while.

ok I am down to my last ty out of 2 50 pk bundles and heard there are sites other than amazon that offer better deals. If this is true then which site is reputable for selling authenticated ty media.

Ok I have took a decision and I bought, a 50 spindle pack of FUJI DVD+R (made in japan), and I bough a 50 pack of DVD-R Verbatim, I also bough a 100 CD-R pack berkley and jensen, I think I will do ok with those 2 brands, now Im planning to buy MINI DVD'S (Backing up Game cube) but it seems very difficult and very expensive (Dinex?!?!?! mini DVD-R 3 pack $20.00) to much, so Ive decided to order a 25 pack of MINI DVD'S prodisc for $22.00 dollars at supermedia store, thanks everyone for your help :P

I just went through a 100 spindle of the Berkley and Jensen, id as CMC mag, but I used them to burn audio books because the disks were cheap at my warehouse. They burn okay the only problem with them is that you cannot tell which side is which, the dye is so light it looked like the front. At least on the ones I bought :~)

With audio books, you are using 11 disks, so cheap is good. My library lets you download them and then you can burn them which is all nice and legal. For music I use Maxell much better choice :~)

So you think Berkley and Jensen CD-R will be bad quality?? It is very important that these cd's last very long and have low Read/Write Errors, do you think it will be better to return them?? I had used Hp (CMC Mag) CD-R before, and no probs but in conclusion: Do you think these CD-R will cause me trouble, should I return them???

They play fine for me and I had no problem burning them, as for how long they are going to last, I can't say. I have cd's that were made years ago on really cheap disks and they are still playing. Audio CD's are a little more forgiving than Video.

with the many 1000s of cd's (and most brands) i've burnt since recordable cd's first came out, it's been very hard to find duds. Plus i've still got most of them. The worst problem i've ever had is crappy cheapy silver flaking off the top of discs. I've burnt my share of coasters, but no more than anyone else

Well your probbably right CD's arent are picky as DVD's, but why does these companys buy Disc to CMC mag knowing their bad quality!!! :@, When I was buying the CD'S my auntie said "Hey I dont think they will sell them if they were of bad quality" umm that's why people keep buying CMC MAG!! Ill join the anti CMC MAG club, If we dont buy CMC mag they get no money and they have to 1. Get broke :'( or 2. Get their disc better!! That is my eternal hope!!

welcome aboard~ :)

the reason the retail brands KEEP buying CMC MAG manufactured discs is that most likely they are the CHEAPEST/most INEXPENSIVE to buy and then repackage at the time~ :)

all the brands have 1 thing in common...BUY CHEAP, SELL and make MORE $$$...everything is driven by $$$, the more profit a company can make by "cutting corners" and purchasing from a more inexpensive manufacturer...so be it~ :)

also, the quality control varies GREATLY from one seller (brand) to the next, i know for a fact that TY has much higher standards to adhere by when the sell their discs to the general consumer, while even their "less than perfect" batchs DO sometimes make it to the public, the quality on those are STILL higher than the HIGHEST of CMC MAG manufactured discs~ it's just a fact in life, some companies are all about making the fast buck, while others have a longstanding reputation that they need to maintain. :)

Thats true, the problem is not much people knows everything we know (CMC=BAD!!,TY=GOOD :) so when my auntie goes to the store she buys this berkley and jensen DVD-R and she says They work perfectly!!! a bad burn she blames the burner. So if everyone knew like us (CMC=BAD!! TY=GOOD ;) CMC mag will be probbably broke by now.

PS: Summ funny that happened to me at a local store, a CD-R creative burner 8xCD-R 4xCD-RW at $100.00 dollars LMAO!!!!!!!!!!

@counley

You can buy the 16x media but set your burn speed to 4x, you can even go up to 8x with good media, burning at 16x is really not recommended.
