I have had a strange problem begin recently. I have been using Shrink for approx 8 months on this system with no problems until recently. (Athlon 64 2800+, gigabyte K8NS mobo, 1.5gb Mushkin DDR400 ram running at 333, ATI 9600XT 128mb, Seagate 160gb SATA HD 20/40/100gb partitions, NEC 3500 DVD burner, Sony 16xDVD/CDRW drive, Antec case 350W power supply, WinXP Pro Sp2)

Recently DVD Shrink began locking the system up when I would attempt to open a disc, sometimes it would open and then I would get to analysis, sometimes make it to encoding. Shrink didn't seem to care about when it would lock up, just happened before the disc would be done. It didn't make a difference if I was opening from either dvd drive or files from the hard drive, it still locked up. A hard reset would be required to get the computer back alive.

I check the temps, CPU never above 35 C, system never above 38C. Tried with the case side open and fan, didn't make a difference. The one thing that has stopped it from locking up is this. I took out 2 sticks of ram and dropped it down to 512mb. It doesn't make a difference which stick of ram is in the computer as long as only 512mb is there and it will work just fine. Once I put another stick in, shrink will not make it through a disc. I don't understand why this is this way, and would like any ideas of how to fix the problem. Shrink had been running fine with 1.5gb or ram before and now all the sudden it kills the computer completely.

Please help and thanks in advance for any suggestions. Shrink seems to be the only problem that causes a problem when there is more than 1 stick of ram in the computer.

Not all movies are compatible with DVD Shrink.
I have had DVD Shrink freeze on me doing certain movies,
I would try a movie you have already copied, or

You could also try running AnyDVD in the background,
That solved the problems I have had so far. (with Dvd shrink)

Good luck :)

You can over come this problem by not closing your DVD Burner door first...open DVDSHRINK...then click on "Open Disc"....once the screen to show the burner that you are choosing to use is visable go ahead and close the door to your burner....not sure what program conflicts with DVDSHRINK, but this is the easiest way that I have found to fix the problem...it doesnt work 100% of the time, but it is better then having to reboot every time to make DVDSHRINK work.

Ok, I began having the same symptoms today.

Have been using DVD Shrink (most recent version) for several months. AMD Athlon +3000, 1 GB Ram. No problems whatsoever.

Installed the newest Nvidia video drivers, and went to use DVD Shrink. Will not launch. cntl/alt/del to Task Mgr, shows NO applications running, the process DVD Shrink using 99% of CPU.

Tried reinstalling DVD Shrink, including downloading a clean version of it. Tried going back to the previous Nvidia graphics driver (using CAB cleaner and Driver Cleaner)- now on the original driver (77.72) - still won't run. I'm thinking this has to be related to the video driver (78.01)somehow.

Is there another tool I can use instead of DVD Shrink 3.2? Guess my next step would have to be reformat C: and reinstall everything - hate to do that. Any ideas?

thats weird ray....did you look at the link "zippy" sent about dvdshrink?...(above)...also..i have "ghost", running and i have to click on the DVD Shrink icon on my desk for DVD Shrink to open.

The only other program i use is "super dvd copy"..i use this when dvdshrink cant encode certain movies by columbia pictures...this proggie also allows you to split the files for 2 disc's on the big movies..hope this helps

try the program "super dvd copy"...always works for me..and it will split files automatically if you want it to for big movies...or it will burn it to one file. It takes only 3 to 5 minuets longer than dvd shrink

This must be contagious. The same thing--well, similar, is happening to me. Used DVD Shrink for a long time with no problems. Now, it's taking much longer to burn a DVD. Instead of a 20 minute slow burn, it's a very jerky longer period of time. If another program is running, it just freezes. Not sure what updates were done. Ran virus scan and spyware scans, no problem. The link to possible problems is a bit to technical for me. I might have to just uninstall and reinstall again. Any other solutions?

Thanks.

Thanks. I did look at the link, and there are some things that are a bit technical for me. It seems to be a common situation, especially recently. I've seen it on other threads, too. I wonder if it's certain DVDs or whether there was an update that lots of people installed at approximately the same time?

I think this first happened after trying to backup House of Flying Daggers. Coincidece or ???

Thanks.

house of daggers and most movies by "columbia pictures" have a special encryption in their dvd. I had to use "super dvd copy" on that movie myself because DVD Shrink would not analysis it. Along with resident evil 2 and others by columbia pictures. I highly recommend "super dvd copy" as it will decode all movies and split the files if you want. DVD Shrink and super dvd copy are the only 2 programs i use.....hope thos helps ya :O)

So for the last several months I have been running my computer with 512mb of ram. I have had no problems with shrink when I only have this much ram. I can even use decrypter to put several iso files on the hard drive, then use shrink to encode 6 movies at one time by having 6 copies of shrink open at one time. It takes about 8 hours to do 6 at once, but it does it without locking up the computer. The minute I add more ram is when my computer will lock up only when using shrink. Man it is confusing and very annoying to have extra memory not being used on the desk.

Thanks Flabob. I'll have to look into it. I've read a few other threads that suggest it's PIO / DMA problem cause after several error messages from a scratched disk. My problem occured after not being able to backup a specific disk. I did change the PIO (?) to DMA, but it didn't help. The other threads said that I need to uninstall something, then reboot, then. ..Windows XP will reinstall what it needs to. Do I need to uninstall both the primary AND the secondary?
