Hi All,

I need help.

I have downloaded both dvd shrink and dvd decrypter and everything was fine until today. When i boot up my laptop (Compaq Presario 4002, Centrino, 60GB) the computer usage is very high, so much that it takes 4-5 minutes to boot up. The pc was also making some very load crackling noises (almost like the hard drive was losing the plot!) - So, I uninstalled dvd shrink only, re-booted and it is working fine again. I am sorry, I am not exactly a wiz a computing, but the bery basics I do understand. DVD decrypter does not seem to be clogging up the pc. I downloaded both programms from this site yesterday, and backed up 2 movies without any problem. Please help!!

Thanks

You most certainly did NOT get a virus if you downloaded from AD. Did you see the download numbers?
Decrypter downloads since last update 553996
Shrink downloads since last update 1743173

Did you delete the movie files after burning them? If you leave a couple of 7-8 gig files on your hard drive then that could slow things up if you get too much stuff on your drive. I would try it again and see if the problem repeats. I have not heard of one case of a virus or anything else attached to Shrink or Decrypter. Try and download the files and then point your virus scan at the file before you load it.

Hi!

Yeah, as soon as the disc has finished I deleted the movies from the hard drive. Also, I have spynot S&D, Ad-aware, Norton Antivirus and have checked the laptop including all files. Nothing.

I have re-downloaded the programs again (i have faith in afterdawn) and i hope that it will not come back again. There is a definate 'crackling noise' every so often coming from the laptop though. Umm, just dont know.. I will be glad for some more suggestions though, just to make sure i have covered everything.

The CPU usage seems to be stable at the moment.

Thanks for the imput

A crackling noise coming from your laptop can't be a good thing. I wonder if you have some sort of mechanical problem with your HDD starting to occur.... It may be a good time to get your data backed up. It may be a fan as well so you might want to get your unit serviced.

Hi,
That is not a goos sign is it! I have had the laptop for probably 2 weeks now. Um.. not good at all. The CPU usage keeps going up and down 4% to 95%. Maybe should take it back heh?
Well, thanks to everyone who listed a responce!

Thanks

I am having the same CPU problems, but I am not getting the noise. My system sounds normal, but it takes forever to boot and when it does, it takes forever just to open IE or any other program, and to shut down. At first I thought I was booting without video because the monitor stayed black for so long, but I let it sit for a while and it eventually came up.

I installed Shrink yesterday, but didn't use it until today. The program locked before my first rip. After managing to reboot in safe mode and sweeping with Adaware and Spybot, the system booted fine until I ripped again. This time, I got the rip then the problem returned. Now I've removed Shrink (have not run Adaware again because it's too slow) but the problem does not go away.

One last thing that may or may not have anything to do with the problem. When I try to shut down I get a message saying the program shelllconhiddenwindow.exe is not responding. I have no idea what that program is.

Oh well, looks like I'll be spending the rest of the night re-installing XP. Hope someone has some ideas about this.

I know this isn't a PC Forum, so I'll keep this short.
@aronchav, just because you are running Adaware or Spybot and you 'think' you're cleaning your system, doesn't mean you are. You have to go into your task manager, end the spyware processes that are running, delete any unfamiliar programs from your Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, delete Spyware processes from your startup in msconfig, and delete the spyware registry keys from the registry under Local Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run as well as CurrentUser/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run as well as all other spyware keys. The one's I gave you are the one's that load at startup. If you don't do 'ALL' that, many a spyware and malware will come back at startup.
I can assure you, it's not DVD Shrink causing your problems. Hope this helps and sorry for the 'techy' post. Just trying to help.

Yeah, I know those spyware removal programs aren't that great by themselves, and I know there are too many happy users of Shrink for it to be that problem alone. But doesn't it seem a strange coincidence that toto and I are having the same problems after installing and using the same program? I'd like to hear back from toto, if he has had his hard drive checked, if he's running Shrink now without any problems, if everything cleared up on its own.

Another thought: Could there be a problem with Nero or with the interface between Nero and Shrink? I ask because I never had Nero on my system until I installed Shrink. I think I may have even loaded Shrink, seen the option to use Nero, closed Shrink then installed Nero before ripping, and that's when the problem started happining.

I have Nero Express 6 that came with my burner. The reaon I ask about it is becasue I installed it on another computer to backup files from mine before I wiped it and re-installed XP. The first time I tried to burn the backup CD, I got the same slow hang-up. Only this time after closing the program succesfully and re-booting, the problem has not returned on this 2nd system (which has never had Shrink on it). After reporting the error to MS, they said there was a update to Nero, but I have not installed it yet. I removed Nero and Shrink from my system and still have the problem, though.

Anyway, I did not re-install last night but I will today. It's not a big deal for me. When I'm done I'll put Shrink and Nero back on a perfectly clean system and see what happens.

And thanks for that spyware removal info. I knew adaware and spybot didn't get it all, but I didn't know how to do more than that.

Hi guys,

Yes. I had to call HP and get a replacement laptop (after 2 weeks of buying it!!). The Hard drive apparently just broke down and it could not be repaired. It seems (to me) that it was NOT dvdshrink that caused the problem, just bad timing i guess.

It seems that you may also have a problem with the hard drive. I think that dvdshrink has been downloaded so many times (thousands) and this does not happen to everyone.. so i am quite confident that it is safe.

So a new laptop - Here we go again!!
Thanks

you'll find it was simply Shrink stressing out the system as the hard drive was ready to pop. (probably simply due to the extra heat pushing the hard drive over the edge)

I downloaded dvd decryptor from one of the mirror sites and it contained a virus already. Beware of any downloads and scan them with AV before you install them!

In my case, I beleive the problem is Nero Express 6. I formatted C: and re-installed XP. I installed Shrink and Decrypter with no problems. Nero, however, barely made it through the installation. I tried to cancel just to see if it was still responding, and it was, so I let it work. When it finally got done my system was screwed again -- boot-up, shut-down, launching programs, everything moving so slow.

I tried to un-install but there is no option in the Nero folder itself and when I go through XP remove programs, Nero pops up a window telling me I can't un-install because it is using old files that need to be updated then shuts down the un-install process. I went to their site for an update, but they only have an update for Nero 6 Ultimate Edition or something like that. Since I just have the Express version I wasn't sure if that would even patch.

Not sure if I got a bad disk or if Nero just doesn't like me, but after putting it on a clean system I am pretty sure that is what is screwing me. I'm going to try again to remove the program with out wiping the system again. Either way, I'll put Roxio back on when I get working again.

Any ideas on what is happening or how to get this off? I don't know anything about registeries but I was assuming that manually deleting the folder might leave the problem.

type nero clean tools into google, you just need to uninstall it first, it's a bugger to uninstall

The clean tools did not work. I took it all off, but I still had horrible problems. I have now re-installed XP again and put Shrink and Decrypter back on and am running perfectly. Nero will never see my system again.
