This may be a tad long but please bear with me.

I'm a first timer with burning with decrypter and shrink but have instructions that have worked for someone else but not for me!

My instructions are:

Open DVD Decrypter
Place DVD in drive
Select Mode/ISO/Read
(note where it places file on C drive)
Select green arrow at bottom
Let decrypter go to work (about 20 mins)
Will then display - Operation successfully completed
Hit OK
Minimise Decrypter

(IT ALL SEEMS TO WORK OK UP TO HERE BUT NOT TOO SURE OF WHAT'S HAPPENING FROM HERE ON)

Open Shrink
Go to file/Open disk Image
Get file just ripped by Encrypter
Select file with that has (little disk symbol) and open
This will analyse file

Once analysed select Re-author
Double click on main movie - Title 1
This will place file on left hand side uner - re-authored DVD
Select back up
Back up DVD window will come up
In select target folder section place number 1 after title
Then hit OK

Close Shrink and open Decrypter
Select Mode/ISO/write
Select file to burn from C drive

(I can't find a file in C drive (or anywhere else)that has a (little disk symbol and named ladder_49_1. But there is a folder in C drive named Ladder_49_1 with 2 folders in it named Audio_TS which is empty and Video_TS which has 19 files inside named various VTS_01(or other numbers)ending with bup, ifo or vob - so I can't find a file to pick up and burn)

The rest of the instructions are:
Place blank DVD in drive
Decrypter will enable green arrow
Press
Let Decrypter do it's work (app. 10 mins)
Done

I have tried on 2 computers and Athlon 6400 and a Pentium 4, so could you please tell me where I'm going wrong.

The person who I got the intructions off has it work for them and says that when I go to find the file there shoudl be 2 files the same with little disk symbols beore them called Ladder_49 and Ladder_49_1, but I don't have the second one, only the folder.

When you click backup you'll see a line "Select Backup Target". Drop it down and click ISO image burn with Decrypter

When using DVDShrink, first I always rip to HD with DVDDecrypter in File mode.
I then direct the output of Shrink into Video_TS folder.
Any burning program (ie. Nero) can then easily burn a DVD from it :^)
Working with ISOs as both input/output is bad plan...

This is not the way I would do it, but it is a good way to use free programs and get your feet wet.

You can just let Shrink open Decrypter for you. That is a bit easier. Shrink will handle the encryption on most movies so start by opening the movie in Shrink, let it analyze.

Once that is completed, Select Re-author and drag the main title over.

Remove un-needed subpictures and audio streams.

Select Backup. The first tab on the Backup DVD menu is "Target Device". From the Select Backup Target menu, select "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter".

Look over the other Backup DVD tabs and set them as needed, quality settings, Region settings etc.

Next, put a blank disc in your burner and select OK. Shrink will start the encoding process. When that finishes, Shrink will open DVD Decrypter and start the burn process. You just sit there and watch.

I made a guide that might help:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide004.html

If you use Decrypter first you can still use Shrink/Decrypter to burn with.
One thing I do a bit differently is that I put the movie in the drive before opening Decrypter. Also I don't know why you are placing a "1" after the title. This is not necessary. Shrink can handle Decrypter's output without any modifications.

OK, I have done what ppower has said first in 'When you click backup you'll see a line "Select Backup Target". Drop it down and click ISO image burn with Decrypter'and this seems to have worked. I have clicked the DVD through the chapters but have not watched it as yet. Hmmm , wondering if my friend has left out a line in her instructions when re-writing them for me.

fasfrank - on your suggestion - does doing it in Shrink first then Decrypter save time? as it has taken me 95 minutes from start to finish to burn this DVD.

Also , why does at the end bit with Decrypter does it sometimes open Decrypter twice and tells me it can't do it as it is being used elsewhere - then I have to close the second decrypter and do the last procedure again.

And ... how do I change the compression down to 4300 as has been suggested on this site, tried to do it manually but it would not go down to this, I had instances of freezing at the end of movie in Platinum and have read that it's from burning to the edge of the disk.

I thank you heaps for your suggestions, not a dummy with the computer but tried to figure this one out on my own and not much luck. Had DVDXCopy Platinum for a long time until my computer was reformated.

The way you have it set you do not have to open Decrypter, Shrink should do it for you. That's why you have to close one of the Decrypters. To change the compression target click edit, preferences, at the line were it says DVD-5 drop it down and click custom, now type 4300.

I am now trying it fasfrank's way via the tutorial.

It has run through the the analyse of De-Lovely, that took 31 minutes and now it is encoding and it says that that will take 1 hour 47 minutes .... and that doesn't take in then burning it. Why does it take so long?

Why does a movie - Bride and Prejudice, even though I select ISO, it still saves it as MDS.

And ... I have 2 computers and one doesn't recognise my DVD drive in decrypter when I go to write, it only has the CD drive as an option. I have checked and the DVD drive is working fine.

Even though I have selected ISO I have now had 3 out of 4 movies, National Treasure, Bride and Prejudice (which both freeze at parts when played) and De-Lovely (which I am still burning)change to .MSD files in Shrink.

Can you tell me why and is the cause of the freezing.

What media are you using? What is your burn speed? Are you multitasking while burning?

Maybe I was not clear on the sequence.

Once you have completed your settings on the backup menu and select OK, the encoding process begins. That is normal. At this point you are done making any program inputs and can just wait for your movie to finish.

I think what you did is select OK before you had the blank put in. That shouldn't matter though. You can put the disc in anytime. If you forget to put it in, Shrink will ask you to put one in.

Your analyzing and encoding times are slow unless you have the quality settings boxes checked. This requires two passes of the DVD so the times are a lot longer.

I have a movie I want to burn so I'll give you a step by step...

The movie is "Lemony Snicket's -A Series of Unfortunate Events-"

First....
Setting your burn speed in Decrypter:
Before you begin, open Decrypter. At the top, select Mode then ISO Write. At the lower right. Select the burn speed. I'm using 4X.
Close Decrypter. It remembers this setting.

Place the movie in the DVD ROM and open Shrink.

Setting the preferences:

Select Edit, then Preferences-

Preferences Tab:
Target size: DVD-5 (Many people like to change this to "Custom" and use a smaller target size, around 4300 MB. I use excellent Taiyo Yuden media and have no problem with the default size)
Check the Auto open Video-TS folders.

Preview Tab:
Default Settings

Output Files Tab:
Top four boxes checked.

Stream Selections Tab:
Default settings

File I/O Tab:
Check "Enable Overlapped I/O.."
Check "Check RPC2 drive region code.."
The remaining boxes are unchecked.

Close the Preferences menu by clicking OK. These settings become the default settings unless the menu is opened again and changes are made.

Now on to the movie itself.

Select "Open Disc".
Click on the movie in the "Open DVD Disc" menu.
Shrink starts to analyse, On my PC this movie completes in 65 seconds.

Looking at the Shrink Screen, I can see that this movie has a compression number of 45.9% mainly because the movie has 1:38 of extras. I re-author most of the movies I burn and this one will be no different.

Reauthoring

Click the Re-author icon and the Re-author window opens.
Double click or drag the Main Movie Title 1 to the left "Re-authored DVD" area.

Click the "Compression Settings" tab at the top right. This will show the compression settings and the audio and subpicture streams.

The compressiion number is now at 79.6%

Uncheck all the subpicture boxes.
I do want to keep one audio stream of course and in this case the one I want is the AC3 5.1-ch English. Uncheck the rest.

Checking the Audio Stream

To verify this is the correct audio:
Start the preview screen.
Advance the slider a bit. I want to listen to people talking so that's what I look for.
Right click the preview screen to open the preview screen menu. Select Audio. From the list, select the AC3 5.1-ch English. This is what you will now hear. In this case it is the correct audio.

Turn off the preview screen.

No compression needed?

At this point my compression number is 100%. I have removed enough to reduce the size of the files to 4,197 MB. In this case no compression will be used. That does not change the way I proceed though.

Start the Backup Process

The next step is to start the backup process. As this will be a automatic Decrypter burn I will make the needed changes to the Backup DVD menu.

I want to put my blank DVD in my burner next, leaving the original in the DVD ROM. I can hear the blank spinning in the burner so...

Setting the options on the Backup Menu

Select Backup!
The menu opens, the first tab is Target Device:
Select backup target: ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter
Select target image file: Default settings work OK for me which on my PC is C:\LEMONY_SNICKET_D1_43.ISO

DVD Region Tab:
Check the Region Free box

Quality Settings:
In the case of this movie, because no compression is needed the quality settings are not available. If compression was needed, these settings can improve the quality of your movie. They will add a lot of time to the process so be aware of that and that any time your process starts taking a long time, check these settings!

Options Tab:
Check the bottom box.
Low priority is if you want to change the way your PC shares it's resources. Checking the low priority mode allows you to do other things with your PC while copying a movie. Not recommended!

Burn Settings Tab:
Default settings are OK here.

Shrink has been set up and will now open DVD Decrypter to start the burn process at the correct time.

Select OK on the Backup DVD menu and the Shrink encoding process will begin.

Here is how it went for this particular movie:

9:22AM: Started encoding.

9:32AM: Encoding completed, Decrypter opens automatically and starts the burn at 4X.

I monitored the buffer levels. The first Buffer stays at 100%, the Device Buffer fluctuates between 95%-100%.
This is normal for my PC.

9:46AM: The process is complete. The time required was 24 minutes from start to finish with a burn speed of 4X.

Reminder
The settings made in Shrink will stay as set so you don't have to change them again. Just put in the next movie, select re-author if you want to remove things and then just select Back-up! When the Backup Menu appears, select OK and the previous settings will be used.

One more thing...

You have the "Create MDS File" box checked in DVD Decrypter. This is a default setting and should not be a problem. I looked for a MDS file after doing the movie in the previous post but could not find one.

You can disable it by opening Decrypter and going to:

Tools -> Settings -> ISO Read Mode tab.

See if the "Create MDS File" box is checked.

You can uncheck it.

You will get this warning:

"Please Note:

This setting should be left enabled if you intend on creatiing 'double layer' backups via the 'ISO Read'-> 'ISO Write' method.

If you disable it and your double layer backups don't work, don't come crying to me!

The MDS file also allows DAEMON tools/Alchohol 120% to more closely emulate the original disc.

Are you sure you want to disable it?"

Because you are not making a double layer recording or using the programs mentioned, you can uncheck the box.

Here we go:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
- Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
- 1GB/2.40MHz DDR (2x 512MB)
- 200GB SATA
- DVDRW Super Multi Drive
- 256MB

Packard iextreme
AMD Athlon 64 processor 3400+
2.40GHZ
1gb RAM

DVDRW Super Multi Drive or in the hardware it says
HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GSA - 4163B

Primary IDE is transfer is ULTRA DMA mode 5
Secondary IDE transfer is ULTRA DMA mode 4

Now I must admit that 3 disks were burnt on el cheapo Printco but have had some success with those with Platinum 1-4x

1 DVD was burnt on a Verbatim DVD+R16x with advanced AZO

All kept freezing in various parts, I had it set to 4300

I have read your best media tips and have ordered some Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8x Thermal Printable, so when they come in a couple of days in wil try again with fasfrank's second lot of instructions and see if that make a difference.

Is there any suggestions that you can give me or is there any programs out there, even to buy, that work easily.

Sorry, also what programs should I not have on the computer that might interfere with the burning.

What happens with my trend 2005 virus scan and what happens when the window in this for new components to update' keeps popping up.

fasfrank - on reading your instructions at Start the Backup Process', you say 'I want to put my blank DVD in my burner next, leaving the original in the DVD ROM'... does that mean you have 2 dvd burners in your computer or 1 burner and just one dvd rom?

If I need to get either (let me know which) I will if this makes it easier for me.

I have a ROM and a DVD Burner. If you have just a burner then you would need to remove the original and put in the blank when Shrink prompts you.

It will be easier if you have two drives. ROMS are inexpensive.

Your Athlon 64 is an excellent machine. With a DVD ROM and some Taiyo Yuden media you will have an excellent set-up for burning.

Newegg has some good deals on drives:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101131
My favorite:
http://store.yahoo.com/qtek/noname21.html

I like Pioneer burners and Newegg has some good deals.

I am not surprised with bad burns using Princo Media, the Verbatim should not have had a problem though.

I use McAfee virus protection so I don't know if yours is a problem. You can disable it for the burn. This is usually done to conserve system resources on less capable machines. You Athlon should not have a problem.

At this point you probably don't have any conflicting programs. You may have Roxio which has a CD program that occasionaly causes problems. Newer versions of Roxio and Nero InCD don't really cause problems like older versions did.

fasfrank ... I'll get back to you when I have my new disks and I'll have a look at a rom, you mean jsut a DVDCD rom that will only play and not burn, for the extra one?

As I'm in Australia I guess those sights won't be any good to me but I'll have a look around here.
