Well I've been working on this one job now for weeks.
Always a different problem. It's not even a first-run film
dvd but a documentary that shouldn't have any copy protection
on it at all.

But that wasn't the problem area.

I got a good decrypt from DVD Decrypter.

I put the video_ts file through DVD Shrink 3 and got the
following error in Win98se after about 2 hours of-- shrinking
I suppose:

This program has performed an illegal operation and
will be shut down.
DVD Shrink caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL
at 017f:bff7a138 and then a list of registers.

WTF is up with this program? I have been trying to get
this one job out forever now: 2-3 hour processes winding up in pure
wasted time.

Am I jinxed?

Ok, here's the rundown:

Tyan 1854 combo board with P2 Slot One...
don't know the Intel treadanme offhand.

394 mem

Outboard US Robotics dialup on Com2

Matrox hand-me-down PCI vid card.

Win98SE

and sometimes Simply Mepsi Linux 3.3.1

I thought Kernel Issues only cropped up in stuff like
Debian and Red Hat.

Would reading a guide do any good for such a problem
or is it at system level?

need more info: hard drive space.

It looks to me that your pc is really under sourced for what you are attempting

On this setup I have a 30G and reduced wave files and such before
doing this job to 12G. DVD Shrink reported needed space to
be about half of what was needed to write the image file.

I have a 60G that I was using on this job but it didn't seem
to matter. The system error would occur there too.

But while I'm in here, DVD Decrypter makes a file folder
when it runs which put my video_ts file in a subfolder under
the program name. So what happened was I'd get my file
decrypted and then, in the attempt to use a simple program
for a noob like Nero Express, NE could not find a subfolder
at all. So I was screwed there too.

I sense you need to use a Reg cleaner, coz your OS seems to be full of invalid registries. e.g Try using jv power tools.

I've used Crapcleaner and also the free program called
Reg cleaner.

Reg cleaners like backup progs are those prized items
that _everybody charges for_ as full-featured programs.

The real deal is that I've had an ok time using DVDD and DVDS
(see above) except for this particular item. It's like it
requires some sort ofd special hack which i think odd because
it's a public service informational documentary.

So this particular job hits a snag at just about the same
spot of completion everytime -- about 67% IIRC.

Thanks for answering.

You might have tried many Reg. cleaner but do use the 30 day trial version of jv 16 power tools, it has all functions in the trial ver. & in my books probably would rate it in the top 3 Reg. cleaners.

Take care.

PS: I used to get such errors BUT not after regular usage of JV tools.

Ok, I grabbed the program.

Please describe the cautions mentioned for use of this
cleaner. At the very minimum, I'll be doing a whole drive
backup before running this.

My experience has been that reg cleaners dust out the
top few of their features and then tell you that
you have 1600 'deep' errors or whatevs and that requires
the paid version.

When I receive info like this, I figure that there is
something i don't know about the statement such as
1575 of such errors are normal for instance. ;-)

This proggie has some nice feature. e.g. it scans first, for which you should, in Preferences select DEEP SCANNIG, than after it scans it highlights the safe invalid items as GREEN & Borderline as RED, check only the GREEN ones, than it gives an option of a back up, make one just in case.

Good luck. It?s an extremely safe Reg. cleaner unlike others. Relax

here's an easy fix to try - snippet from http://forum.digital-digest.com/archive/index.php/t-38614-p-1.html -
Quote:
Because the Kernel32.dll is a memory-related .dll, I deleted the movie files that I was trying to open with Shrink, then deleted the folder they were in (just for good measure). I created a new folder to decrypt to with DVD Decrypter, then decrypted the movie again. This time, there was no problem analysing the files with Shrink! YAY! :D

Hi there,

I too know that the best possible solution is format & a fresh install.

If this guy has an image created (like I do when I fresh install immediately create an image using GHOST 2003 & save it at some other place or on some media, I can experiment any thing with my machine coz I know if some thing goes wrong I can have the system back & running, in the same state in 10 mins), other wise it shall take him at least 1 days to bring back the system in its original state.

It?s not just formatting & installing win9x; I know that takes around 25 mins at least with me. Than comes the troublesome job of installing drivers, updates, anti virus, anti spy wares, utilities, scanning, defrag etc.

Hello Rotary,

New drivers are not released every day or week. By the way I update the image weekly, so any thing new is added.

Take care.

hi

maybe? but apps like nero are...

i just thought time span was an issue here? as ghosting every week and then a reload of it if needed can mount to alot of time, on something that could have potential viruses stored and any manner of bad news waiting to happen conflicts...

so an erase and a reload every 12 months is kool for me - ;-])

take care...

Hi there,

Well I agree too NOTHING like a fresh install.

But even with ghost I don?t have the need for a format for at least 6 months.

I think a lot depends on the drives files system & if there are bad areas on the drive specially caused by deleting/ corrupt AVI files.

Basically I use AVG as antivirus, Lavasoft SE prof. as anti spy ware, Diskeeper as defragmenter.

I?m a beginner & as always say am pc dumb/ illiterate always trying to learn new things.

Like you guys are teaching me the basics of DVD burning.

Take care & have a great day.

Lots of stuff in here today, so thanks for keeping the thread
alive.

I hosed an install a few weeks ago of a dula boot with Linus
and Win98. So at that time I did a reinstall of Windows
to salvage my stuff. That part is done.

Last night I made 2 mirror backups-- I normally keep an
active drive and 2 backups around.

Since I have been through this probelm of getting this particular
dvd job done repeatedly after cleaning out vid files and and
redoing fgrom scratch I think this is also beside the point.

But I want to discuss a previous error-- one that had me stumped
when i was trying to move the video_ts files from a subfolder
to a main folder so that Nero could see it. A simple file copy
of all files in a folder gave the following error:

"A special entry already present in target location-- origianl
Joliet or ISO file names can be identical. Cannot move
Video_ts.VOB to new location. This repeated with various file
names. After using Find to find all the video_ts and deleting
them, Nero Express still produced this error.

Again, I have had good success using the DVDDecrypter-hrink system
on other jobs. Could the original have bad data? The disk runs in
play mode fine.

Other question that i have is in Decrypter:

At what piont can I change the direectory location name to
c:/Video_ts from the one it wants to make with a subject name,
for example: if DVDD creates the directory in c:/Gone With The Wind/Video_ts, I want the Video_ts folder to be the main folder and not a sub.

What I've shown above is the default action of DVDDecrypter.

Did you use jv 16 power tools?

Did the reg. have any invalid entries? my guess plus 200 lol?

Take care.

One more suggestions, in future if possible use VMWARE software, in which you can use as many as 5 different OS simultaneously, running at the same time, instead of a dual boot.

Take care.

Hi again,

I ran the reg cleaner prog recommended. It found 650
red hot targets and a few other ones. I wiped 'em all out and
rebooted and everything still works. :-)

But when I went to do the DVDShrink routine again, it failed even earlier than at the last attempt... Going to check and see if my
disk is loaded up with old mirror files...Nope I have 11G of freespace
even after the failed Shrink session.

So still nothing positive on this.

I would suggest Uninstall Shrink; run JV power tools again, reboot & than reinstall Shrink & give it one more shot.

PS: If you have the backups made than why not format & reinstall the OS. Are you using a DSL or a dial up?
