Hey everyone,
I have 3 DVD's that I've tried using DVD Shrink 3.2 on. They are Garden State, The Incredibles, and the Sopranos season 1. DVD Shrink reads the contents and lets me check or uncheck which features I want to copy, but when I click "Backup!" the program just closes and that's it. It does it with all the discs, and on 2 different DVD drives.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening? I need this app because all these new flicks are like 8gb and I have no other way to back them up.
Thanks for any tips. FYI - I run AnyDVD as well, but I tried shutting it down and I still had the same problem.

Im not sure what the problem with shrink is that u have.
But I found shrink a bit slow in the burning and compression aspect to it.
I use DVD Decypter.
It will burn everything to Hard drive and then u can copy the DVD movie file only Depending if u only have Single Layer Blanks.
Then just use programs like Clone DVD to burn the movie across
not u can burn just movie no special features.
Keep me posted :)

Like I said, the dang thing just closes when I click backup so go figure!
If I cant compress the movie, I want to know how you burn multiple discs from an 8GB dvd. Alcohol lets you split up the image, but when it goes to burn the mds file it tries to stick both halves of the image on the disc, which obviously does not fit.
I may uninstall DVD Shrink again, reboot and try it again, but Im not sure that will work.
How do you split out just the movie file when you make an image from DVD decryptor?

I split it with Clone DVD ther u can see the files all seprate and u c the main movie file and u can click and choose that file and only copy that which is the whole movie.
The file is ussaually over 1 hour long
click that and then go through the rest of thr Wizard in Clone DVD.
u have to use DVD dycrypeter t oput it on the hard drive then use Clone DVD to select only the movie file.
I hope that helps
keep me posted if u get stuck

The idea though is that DVD Shrink should work. I have it on another computer and it backed up the same dvds just fine. I can't figure why the program would just crash when I click bacup, and find it hard to believe that I'm the only one ever to have this problem.
Thanks for your alternative options though, they are appreciated.

Shrink will work just fine for the movies you mentioned. I have used the program on all of them. What you need to do is copy the entire disk content to a Hard Drive Partition using DVD Decrypter. Then, use the Open Files feature in DVD Shrink to load the VIDEO_TS Folder that Decrypter wrote for you - After that, Shrink will work from the HD file rather than the disk. You should have no problems if you do it that way. Shrink works Much Better (and faster) when it can read from the HD rather than a disk, and it errors out a LOT less.

Ok, this is really ridiculous. I've uninstalled and reinstalled DVD Shrink 3.2 a few times and I know the app works on those DVD's because, like I said, it worked on another computer.
I even uninstalled the app, then installed Registry Mechanic, and let it clean out my registry, then reinstalled DVD Shrink and it has the same exact problem. And smsmike, I did rip the files to the hard drive with DVDD and it still just crashes when I click "Backup!" I dont even get the pop up box to select the options or anything! How frustrating
Well it's obvious it's something on my PC, but I can't imagine what it would be.

Well guy, you certainly have generated an unusual problem - a first, as far as I can remember. I've seen Shrink do some strange things, but never "Crap Out" just at the touch of the "Backup" icon.
It more than likely won't change a thing, but you might try downloading Shrink again, then try a fresh instal with that fresh download. If you are running Windows XP, you also might consider the possibility of corruption in some of your boot files, and try a backup copy of your setup. Sometimes a registry cleanup is NOT the answer, but a backup copy from a time when you know the program worked might get you back on track. Unless, of course, it has never worked on the computer you are currently using..
Other than those suggestions, I really don't know what to tell you.

Yeah, I did try the fresh download after my last post, seems we think alike. Unfortunately I had the same problem.
Re: restoring potentially corrupt boot files, I am not sure if I wanna deal with the consequences of restoring my system to some arbitrary point in history.
I need to wipe my hdd & do a fresh install of XP, so until then I guess I'll just have to do my shrink & burns at work :)

For those of you who are having PROGRAM problems with DVD Shrink, I would suggest that you take them to the Official DVD Shrink Web Site.
http://www.dvdshrink.info/
All of the advice in this thread assumes that your computer, and the programs on it, are compatible. If not they are not, you need a different kind of help -The Best Place you can visit for answers is the Official Shrink Web Site.
