I use DVD Decrypter to copy the files to my HD. I then use Shrink to compress and burn to disc via NERO. It had been working fine until recently. The last two dvd's i tried to burn gave me an error message after the encoding was finished. It said "Burn failed." It also mentioned that the encoding went through okay, so I should techincally be able to pick it up again at the burning step. The blank of course is ruined now, though.

I then tried using another burning software to burn the encoded (compressed) files - that was "successful," but when placed it in my toshiba dvd player - "disc error. please check disc."

Please help! I'm not sure what happened with my software. The only thing I can think of is that I opened NERO at one point last week to burn a CD. Maybe I changed the NERO settings somehow.

Thank you to those who can help.

I've had the same kind of problem in the past and I've been told its the blank media that I was using. I'm no expert, but the guys here are really great helping out. You should probably publish the error log from Nero to help them out.

Thanks for the response. I'll publish the log from my home pc later tonight. I was hoping that it was a common problem. I just don't understand why it was working fine, and all of a sudden it stopped working.

I'm willing to take suggestions for other software too. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Nero. It's only there for burning purposes (and it was free with my Lite-On burner)

Thanks.

A lot of these problems are media related as redbaron7 stated.
What media are you using?
The recommended fare around this forum is Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.
Also as redbaron7 stated a Nero log would help us solve your problems.

So I attempted to burn the same DVD again tonight. I haven't bought any other media yet, so I'm stuck with the same Phillips DVD-R blanks. Anyway, I remembered that one setting I DID change recently in Shrink was the Enable Preview setting. I went ahead and disabled it, and it worked fine! I will go ahead and post my error log from last night anyway. Thanks to all who posted. I would like to buy some different media just for the heck of it. Is +R preferable to -R? My player is a 3 year old toshiba, so I imagine it will be able to play either.

Thanks again. Here's my error log:

Your Phillips disc according to your log are made by CMC MAG which from experince and reading posts on this board are one of the worst. I can almost guarentee you they will degrade sooner or later - usually sooner.
SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND means it doesn't like your media.
I would stop using them now and buy some quality media like Verbatim, Fuji (look for made in japan) Sony.
Online Taiyo Yudens (best imho) from supermediastore.com
Your burning with these discs will probably be hit or miss.
edited to add:
-r is more compatable than +r especially the older players however you have a Liteon burner and most will let you booktype a +r disc to dvd-rom which will make the disc player in almost all players (using good media)

Also you need to edit out your serial number,it starts at the top of the log with the 1A-
Quote:
CdRomPeripheral : MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8121 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
Your DMA should normally be on,look at this.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/76265

Like binkie7 said you need to get better discs, but if you don't want to throw those away.Try burning slower than 8x,try 4x or even slower.Change your target size in dvd shrink, to about 4300, so as not to write on the outer edge of the disc, where the dye is thinner on cheap media.

@tbox22 -

in addition to the others' replies -
Quote:
Nero API version: 6.3.1.26
- this version is quite old now, i know you said you don't like it, but it's a great program. Sort the basics and you might get to like it, more importantly you could come to rely on it.. If you're gonna update, uninstall Nero first, then uninstall it fully via " http://ww2.nero.com/en/Clean_Tools.html " as it's a bugger for leaving bits behind when uninstalling. Then download latest which is 6.6.0.14 (not forgetting to note doen your serial number)
Quote:
Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ?
- that question mark shouldn't be there, hopefully this will be sorted when you fix the DMA settings as Jim_dandy advised.

Thanks to all who helped.

I will go ahead and update my Nero software. The DMA thing is strange, because I checked the Primary IDE controller and it was set to DMA. I'll do another check this weekend to be sure it's all set correctly.

I noticed your serial number is still in your original post. People can take your serial # and use it.

Maxell should be fine. They use some great manufacturers: Maxwell, Ritek, RicohJapan, Taiyo Yuden

Too fast slow it down to 4x, and try your burn.

Can you help me out? I always use DVD Shrink along with DVD Decrypter. Today I have a problem. After using the decyrpter I tried shrink. Shrink couldnt fing the ISO file but it was in the same place it always goes to. When I tried to drag it over it says: DVD Shrink encountered an errorand cannot continue. Invalid UDF filesystem. Can anyone help?

Try ripping the file in file mode instead of iso, then proceed with Shrink and see if you get the same error. Here is some more info from some other threads from people who had the same type of error.

So I have similiar problems with using DVD Shrink. I have Nero vesion 6.3.1.4 and have had much success in the past, without any problems I should add, in burning with DVD Shrink onto DVD+R. I now get a the same errors others are getting with trying to burn onto DVD-R. It seemed that the Nero upgrade cost $$$ and I hoped to get some feedback before spending $$$ I don't have. I got a 50 spindle of DVD-R on my desk and I would love to be able to put em to use.

-thanks for any insight for this computer literate (not really) dude
