crossface, you need to edit your Nero serial number out of your post. it's the one that goes 1A21-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX. don't want anyone stealing it, do you? :-)

as Bigfatboy said, you're burning to fast; are you using cheapie media? get teh good stuff: TY, Verbatim, Ritek/Ridata, Fuji...it's all pretty good.

- i'd uninstall Nero, then uninstall completely via " Nero.com/us/Clean_Tools.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.Nero.com/us/Clean_Tools.html " as it leaves stuff behind, then install 6.6.0.14

Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.

Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.

Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA)

Also, download dvdinfopro (free) and run one of your discs thru it's media info check and past results here so we see if bad media is one of the causes

- that doesn't look good. Download latest version from here - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm

Nero API version: 6.3.1.13
- that's real long in the tooth now. Uninstall Nero, then uninstall completely with Nero's Clean Tools as Nero is a bugger for leaving stuff behind when you uninstall it. - "
http://www.nero.com/en/Clean_Tools.html ". Then download latest version, 6.6.0.14

- this is the one thing i can't find yet. Can't find out where newer firmware lives for this burner

CdRomPeripheral : MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-820S atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
- get DMA back on. Be VERY careful with Regedit.
Quote:
Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Last address to be written: 2286111 (508:01.36, 4465MB)
- you're burning virtually to the edge of your discs. In DVD Shrink's preferences, set target size to 4300MB, thus avoiding edge of discs and not sacrificing much space

- i don't personally use Ritek. I would recommend Verbatim datalifeplus. Don't know much about your drive other than it's a Panasonic under the hood. Do a google search for something like 'MATSHITA UJ-820S recommended media' but you should find that Verbatim will work on any drive as they're one of the highest quality discs you can get (and no more expensive that middle of the road or crappy discs

Insert empty disc to write to.
(Medium in drive: unknown. Medium required by compilation: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM.)
- your burner doesn't recognise your media. Get better media as i mentioned above

- you have packet writing software install, it interferes with Nero. Looks like you have Roxio installed. Uninstall it and Nero should be a happy bunny.

Hopefully someone will pop by and chip in for info re newer firmware as that's what teaches the drive about media types, burn speeds etc etc

sorry, i'm always guilty of that. i blitz thru a logfile or whatever and don't always explain fully, or sometimes explain too much. I would hate to seem patronising you see if i explain too much and you never know how some people react to help. I'll have a look at your last reply now...

WinASPI is an annoying subject for me, but only in that i usually recommend people install it if it's not installed, but other people have differing opinions on whether it's needed or not in XP. I have seen some technical replies as to why it is or isn't needed, but am still none the wiser. So now i usually only mention ASPI if a logfile shows an older version (ie older than current 4.71 version), or if it looks corrupt or messed up. In your case the question marks seesm to suggest it's buggered, so i suggested downloading the current version 4.71.

DMA is off on your burner. I'll paste what bbmayo has on his website here - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm 'More than likely your DMA settings have reverted to PIO mode CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives can revert to using PIO mode, despite being set to use "DMA if Available." Here's how to make Windows XP redetect the DMA capabilities of the drives'. The way to fix DMA settings is here - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking%20DMA.pdf

(I and a lot of members here usually recommend bbmayo's guides to people, however bbmayo has been redesigning his website recently so i pasted you the 'regedit' way of fixing DMA. Now his website seems to be back it would be easier (and safer) if you fix your DMA settings with bbmayo's guide. Regedit (Registry Editor) if used improperly can destroy the Windows registry, which holds all the configuration for Windows).

CDRALW2K.SYS i think is installed by Roxio programs, Roxio are known to interfere with Nero; Nero and Roxio simply don't co-exist too well so if you're going to stick with Nero it's best to uninstall Roxio.

ps you don't sound stupid at all; as i say i personally don't always explain things as clearly as i might cus there's always someone who thinks we're out to condescend them, so i would rather somone comes back and says they don't follow some of it.

Hope that helps and ps a big part of your problem 'may' be that the burner's firmware could be out of date. Firmware is what teached the burner about media type, burn speeds etc and if it's out of date you'll get problems as the burner won't know what to do with newer blank media for instance.

the firmware for your drive is the one thing i couldn't find anywhere. Someone else may well be able to help at some point. However for now you should not worry about the errors but just work thru the other solutions i gave you. Hopefully by then someone will have a suggestion for the firmware
