I have owned 2 Plextor burners...they were cd burners they finally gave after 5,000 or so burns...usually a burner is good for 1-2 thousand burns. Amazing quality.

@ kivory......... sent ya a reply back in pm

well, i know i need to get me a back up burner, i was just comparing prices and quality. seems to me i will be going for the quality with the speed too, so looks like i may get me a plexy or a pioneer. but how bout this, if memorex makes such crappy media, would this hold true to their burners then, i mean, if you used their burner and their media, would'nt they go hand in hand with each other? not that i'd own one, after reading all this and now knowing how bad the media really is, but seems like thats all they advertise now a days in the circulars every week.

i wouldn't think that memorex burners should be too bad, more than likely they are built by another company and just REBADGED memorex for sale in retail outlets~ :)

besides, memorex as a company sells SOOO many different products, you can't really say they are a BAD company...it's just their choice of media manufacturers is HORRIBLE...if they switched to a better one, say, Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp (MCC) then, i would have to say Memorex media is GOOD media; but that is NOT the case now is it? lol

it's all about marketing, as long as they make $$$, they could care less and just use their well known name to sell to unsuspecting people out there...the normal everyday, run of the mill person~ :)

you should be fine with the Plextor or Pioneer; just remember, if you are going to be using TY DVD+R in the near future, i haven't found a way to booktype my DVD+R to dvd-rom YET with my pioneer~ that is the downfall..no bitsetting available that i have found as of YET~ and the Plextor can do it ALL w/ plextools :)

so, i use my pioneer to burn to TY DVD-R format, it is faster than my sony and the quality is VERY good; it's just personal preference for me to booktype ALL my DVD+R to dvd-rom for compatibility reasons, but it is obviously NOT a necessity if you find your stand alone dvd players support and WILL PLAY DVD+R format~ :)

good luck on your decision and your purchase~ stick w/ good media and things should be just fine....

i am just wondering who took the time to figure all this information out? how many pain staking hours, sore eyes, fatigued brains, and countless blank media and $$$ was spent just to do this research, only today, for newbies like me, to just read, and a wealth of information is there on the net for us to see, with little or no effort at all, to just buy the good stuff once and be happy forever. you know, i stumbled accross this web site from a google search on something i think a few months ago, and have been hooked ever since, until just recent i have started posting, asking questions and such. i feel thanks to this site, and people like kivory, creaky, scubapete, arniebear, and i know there are many more, but these are the ones i remember most, i have learned massive amount of knowledge, and still learning. cheers to you all, andi hope one day i can do you a favor.

while i have never had any problems with the GENUINE TYG02s, i STILL prefer the DVD+R TYs personally~ good luck on your search buddy~ hopefully you can get some for a good price over there...media is just SOO expensive over there in europe compared to the U.S.~ it's a darn shame~ :)

You can bitset with a Pioneer DVR-109 as long as you use the Buffalo firmware which you can get at http://www.rpc1.org . I used to use it and it worked fine. I took out my DVD-ROM to install my 4th burner and now am using the Pioneer as my main ripping drive because it's the fastest of the four. Now I am using A09 firmware to get faster ripping on DL discs. No more bitsetting with the Pioneer, but I've got three other drives that will do it.I think that the BenQ 1620 that I just bought is pretty neat. I just got it from NewEgg for $44.99 and it came with 25 52X CD-Rs and 25 16X DVD+Rs. Haven't had any problem with it yet. It also will do PI/PIF scans although they are a little different than Lite-On scans.

What brand DVDs did they give away at NewEgg.com with that burner. Were they BenQ branded?

Yes, they were BenQ brand made by Daxon. i've never used them before. They seem to be OK. I've only used a couple because they're not printable and I primarily use the printable ones. I burned one at 16X and did a scan using Nero CD/DVD Speed Quality test with the BenQ at 8X and got: PIE max 103 Avg 27 total 376945 PIF max 13 avg .61 and total 7652. Quality score was 92. Not as good as a TY or Verb, but decent enough. I just feel lucky they weren't made by Princo or CMC. The bare drive would have been $36.99, so I guess I paid $8.00 for the discs and the software that came with it. It also auto bitsets DVD+R to DVD-ROM. I think that for the price you can't beat it. The only drawback is that it's black and doesn't match my other drives. Since I'm the only person that ever looks at it I suppose that doesn't matter much. The $36.99 one is gray which wouldn't match either. I'm not really into esthetics (I really have no idea how to spell that!) anyway.

i was notified by teflonmyk that my pioneer could be bitsetted using buffalo~ :) but, that is a great find...i currently have the rip lock removed, much like you, using the A09 firmware.

if the daxon's work for you, im glad to hear that...definitely NOT same level of quality as TY or Verbs, but, if you are happy who is to argue with you?

aesthetics~ :) you were simply missing an "a" :) good day to you~

I would not have bought the Daxons. I only got them because they came with the burner. I've only burned maybe 3 of thyem. They are better than some I've tried to use. I have had the misfortune to get a spindle of TY with an unusual number of bad discs. I believe they are genuine. The number by the hub is GG000095. Most are good, but I've had several that weren't. Take a look at this scan.

I figure it's Murphy's Law in action.

good lord dave...those burns are OFF the charts~ literally~ in the thousands...yes, those TYs are definitely GENUINE, however, i will have to agree with you on the "bad batch" theory~ you are right about that~ :) i wouldn't spend money for daxon's either, but, hey, FREE is FREE, i can't complain with that~ :)

I probably won't be buying any more of the TY for a while. Those were 8X -R hub printable. I paid $61.00 for a hundred from Supermediastore.com. I can get 100 Verbatim printables from Sam's Club for a little over $41.00. They are 16X and either + or -R depending on which I want. I bought a hundred of each and have had pretty good results with them. They're not hub printable, but I guess I can live without that. The i.d. on the printable surface is about 35 mm which is sort of in between hub printable and normal non hub printable. Hopefully I'm through the bad TYs. I've still got about a third of the spindle left. When they're good, they're really good. When they're bad, they're really bad. No fooling around there.

Those scans are the same as I got from a bulk pack of 'genuine' Yuden from supermedia.ca
This was my first purchase of TY, (based on the good word I read around the Forum), and it was also my last.
I have better scans on the much derided Optodisc.

Most of mine were good, but maybe 5-10% were bad. The ones that were good were as good as they come. The bad ones were also about as bad as they come. Since I can get the Verbs right here in town at a cheaper price I'll probably stick with them.

ooofs, the optodisc are not NEARLY as good as the TY, but, if you have good luck w/ them..all the power to you~ :) do you think perhaps you got FAKE TYs attar? i didn't know there was a store in Canada with a similar name as here in the States...supermedia.ca~ :)

interesting, as i am in the states, i do not know how reputable that store is in canada...but, i've had optodisc in the past and they were horrendous~ not even on the same level as "budget media" IMO~ :) they are just slightly above the DREADED CMC MAG/memorex for me when i burned to them.

but anyways, if they work for you, i hope they KEEP working in the future~ :)

@forkndave yeah, guess some were not so good in that spindle, but i will agree with you there...if they work, they're the BEST, when they don't..they don't...that's how life is~ :) i also highly recommend Verbs to those that TYS seemingly don't work so well for, between the two, you have it BEAT~ :) good luck

so let me pop in and ask a quick question about the printable hubs. what exactly does that mean, is it related to actually burning on the disc or like the lightscribe stuff. just curious, hope i am not annoying people.

I missspoke myself. The store is blankmedia.ca and I have only purchased from them one time.
I don't doubt their honesty, I just don't like their 'TY' product and I won't purchase from them again.

I had started an earlier thread re these discs and the consensus of the forum members was that they are the real McCoy.
The remark about the optodisc media was merely to comment on the scans.
Happens that they were the first discs I received with the burner, turned out that my DVD player couldn't use the +R format, I can only use them on my PC, although I have given them to others with no complaints.

I haven't had enough experience with burning DVD's to make any blanket remarks as to the best buy in media, but it is interesting (to me) that my first experience with 'The Best', was kind of a let-down :)

hiya buddy... send over a few of your TY's to attar, so he can see.
i'd have to agree with kivory, as his knowledge of TY media is supurb, IMHO plus, he knows his TY's as you will see in multiple replies to many and of his own.
happy burning !

@attar

im very sorry that your 1st (and possibly your LAST) experience with Taiyo Yuden went so horribly wrong... :(

at least from the canadian members on here, that is where they buy their media from too and i think it's reputable...unless you got a bad batch, that would be my only understanding/reason why they did not work well for you....

well, with optodisc, SOME people feel they are good budget media, my comment was just based on PERSONAL experience, they were very poor quality when i used them a few years ago, perhaps the newer media has improved from them (i used a 8x DVD+R optodisc coded :OPTODISCOR8 just for your information) and it would skip and pixellate like crazy and then suddenly STOP in my dvd player and the remote would NOT let me fast forward/rewind/continue...)

i then tried to booktype those optodisc to dvd-rom, that didn't help either...still same results.

anyways, im just saddened by the fact that your first and ONLY experience with TY media was so bad and gave you so much trouble, may i recommend you try some Verbs next time? i have found for MOST people i help on here that if they stick with TY and Verbs, their problems with backups are NOT caused by media, but i have to dig deeper into their setup to find the problems...that just makes it easier to eliminate 1 possible cause of the issue at hand.

i wish you the best of luck w/ ur future burns, but please do consider the fact that IF you choose to use GOOD quality media, those movies will continue to last for a long time to come...once we figure out the other "kinks" in the burning process~ :)

@gear

hub printables mean they are printable discs (on top) where the picture can go all the way to the inner circle (the hub)~ you naturally need a inkjet/thermal printer to print directly ONTO the top of the disc, but the regular ones don't print ALL the way to the middle/center...they stop where the clear part of the dvd starts...i hope that isn't confusing...but, it probably is~ :) sorry
