movies27- Glad they work for you my friend ! I do have a question for you though movies27? Would it not be cheaper for you just to order RitekG05's online rather than buy the maxells if they have the same coding? Or do you find the maxell branded RitekG05's more consistent than the ritek branded ones? Or is it just an economical choice due to shipping cost /taxes ect. Anyways I'm glad they work for you so peace & happy burning!

the Maxell -R from Japan should be MXRLGOx! that's supposed to be the best media!

MR Bigtox.......RITEKGO5 is the manufacturer ID. That's not the brand. And not all Ritek disks have that ID! So the Maxell DVD-Rs that Mr Movies has is RITEKGO5 which could be Ridata or Ritek or Memorex or GQ! RITEKG0x makes all those brands! check out the link:

Well I buy a 50 pack from wal-mart for for 28 bucks...the maxell's i get are made in taiwan.Although the maxell + r's are made in japan and the do code out as MXRLGOx .I always buy -r's because they work better for me in my opinion.

my stand alone DVD player doesn't play DVD-Rs! So I am always burning on DVD+Rs. I always thought that the +Rs are better than the -Rs. I could be wrong but I thought I read that they are! Let's ask Creaky!!!!

@Creaky which disk is better and can you explain why?

Thats strange my dvd player plays dvd-r's fine & so do all my friends & their friends players also...which is trust me a lot of people.I have tried the dvd+r & changed the booktype to dvd-rom but upon playback some of them pause the 1st time around upon playback ....but when i rewind it back a few seconds it doesnt do it anymore...but with the -r's they play all the way thru nonstop.

hmmmmmmmmm I must say I never tried DVD-Rs because it says on my Sony DVP-NC650P 5 disk carrasell player's manual that it plays DVD+Rs and nothing about the -Rs. So I always bought the +Rs! that's the only reason why! And I don't get any pause on my DVD+Rs! but again I don't know about the -Rs!

on the whole DVD+ R VS DVD-R issue DVD+R does have an advantage in that if your burner will allow you to set booktype it makes DVD+R media look like dvd-roms to your player in essence making it even more compataible ! being able to nurn & play both - & + I look at it like this if I'm doing a dvdr for myself only I can use either if It is going to be played somewhere other than on my equipment I tend to stay with - R personally I like them both and use both so it's a win win for me and you use plus because that's what works for you & your equipment Great enjoy your burner & happy burning ! my stand alone recorder is + R & +RW only but it will play - out of curiousity what are you using?

I use only the best: Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Sony disks.... I'll get some -Rs but only a hand full cause I don't know if it will run on my standalone! I am also going to get some Maxells, too, just to try them out!

I'm also doing inventory and I'm up to 285 movies backed up!

Since I'm not "Creaky" I'll let him do the explanation here. Anyways, in regards to the DVD+R and DVD-R deal, honestly, I prefer the DVD+R(s) over any DVD-R(s). With the +R, you can easily "booktype" it into a DVD-ROM format, which this will be 100% compatible with 3 yrs or older stand alone dvd players; not only dvd players, but PS2 and XBOX console systems as well. I believe the DVD+R is more advanced and has better dye for its recording performances. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Perhaps, I could be wrong, so please feel free to educate me any time.

alkohol - Not being Creaky Either my understanding of the + - isssue is what you said booktyping if ones burner allows it ! I use either although mostly - R simply because that's what I have the most of ! I also use the + R for my Philips dvd recorder and in my two nec"s so you could say I have a foot in both camps ! Whatever works for you and your system I say go for it and happy burning - Peace!

Unfortunately this is not 100% compatible. I have a GE1401P that is ~4 years old.....it plays all +R's booktyped or not EXCEPT Verbatim's. They come out looking like they are Memorex on playback. They play great on my cheap Sanyo though!

@IHoe - i never get into the differences between - and +, but mainly cus i never remember the differences. I'm mainly a -R man, but only cus that's what i started out with in bulk, so stuck to -R's. For me or anyone whose machines i use my discs on, have no problems with -R, but now i'm gonna start buying a mix of formats, or just go with +R's.

Good day to all..

Hello All,

I have a Pioneer 109 burner.

Does anyone know if it can "Booktype" a DVD+R into a DVD-ROM format,
and if so, how do you do it.

Hey IHoe, where did you get that Disc Quality Test application at?

It looks like a great utility for us "Burners" to have.

Thanks in advance!

You have to use Buffalo firmware to booktype single layer DVD+R discs to DVD-ROM.

Instructions here: (Substitute Buffalo firmware for A09 firmware)
http://www.speedlabs.org/index.php/topic,83.0.html

Buffalo 8.57 firmware here:
http://www2.melcoinc.co.jp/pub/hd/dvmrdm16fb_fw857.exe

Make sure that you FULLY understand the procedure AND consequences of a bad flash before attempting....

Digibop......... you can do the tests and the setting of your drive to DVD-Rom with DVDIfo Pro! It's a great program and it also identifies the media you are using, erases DVD+RWs, does speed test, PI & Po & Jitter tests and more! there is a free version but I liked it so much I bought it! here is the link:
http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

that should help you out!

I set my DVD+Rs and my DVD+RWs booktype to DVD-ROM with DVDInfo Pro!

Thanks for the info teflonmyk and IHoe!

IHoe - I currently have Windows ME, so I can't try the DVDINFOPro free version yet. I have Nero Ultra and it gives loads of info too, but I'm sure it won't let you burner make booktype DVD-ROMs.

I will be building a new computer very soon (have half the parts now) and will definitely use Windows XP Home or Pro version so I can then check out the DVDINFOPro program.

ps - Do you know if the program supports "Dual Layer" discs?

Take Care

Just want to report on those Video Guard Disks. Backed up Wizard of OZ for my 4 year old grandaughter who plays them to death. Used this disk cause I thought it would last longer. Well she has a tendency to rewind in a certain part cause she likes to sing the song. The disk is now unplayable and a groove is worn in that area. So much for it being tougher, I guess it is only for scratches.
