That's interesting arniebear... I didn't think a read-only laser would be powerful enough to damage a disc. You ought to send that one back to Verbatim...

Good idea, she only uses her portable player to rewind. My daughter says she will bring me the disk tomorrow and maybe I will send it to Verbatim.

i did suspect they wouldn't be quite as good as advertised i'm afraid. what i'll say is that many years ago i had an original cd by Jean Michel Jarre - the Equinoxe album, might have been another. I left it on pause overnight, woke up and it was damaged. so to this day i am very funny about all discs

Well at 13.99 for 10 disks I expected something a little better, even the one on regular DVD's never did this. Scratched up yes, but never a groove worn in them.

arniebear-Well that settles that Right! I was contemplating backing up the grandsons copy of GTA San andreas as he & his little brother have rendered it unplayable for a second time - had disc resurfaced once already @ a game store ! But being he does'nt have a mod chip on his PS-2 that would have been a moot point anyway!But the intention was good anyway! If I ever get any game console I'm gonna back up all my games and only play my back up copies with the original locked away for safe keeping! did'nt know a laser could wear a groove in a dvd but I guess it did so thanx for the info arniebear -Peace and happy burning - TOTO I DON'T THINK WE'RE IN KANSAS ANYMORE !

Since regular disks are so cheap I am just going to keep using them and replacing hers. I can make her three disks for the price of one. Gawd I hate that Wizard of OZ movie, she plays it to death. I wish that tinman would rust himself mute :)

well........ arnie...... you are the authority on the Vanguard disks...... mine aer still running strong and still looks like I just took them out of the box! But I am not compared to a little shortie running it over and over again in the same place! Let me ask you something........ what if you bought the real disk and let her have her way with it!? do you think it would last long?? something to think about!

Her real disks, are a disaster between her and her two year old brother. Besides she will only play grandpa's disks because she can play them over and over and they never go bad, that's cause we keep replacing them. Kind of like her fish we tell her go to the hospital and come back well.

What does the groove look and feel like. Is it a darker blue area about a 1/16 wide? I dont understand how the laser could have cut a grove that could be felt with your fingernail. Most lasers only have about 3.3 to 5 volts feeding them. This is interesting, please describe more.
Thanks

arniebear- I think you've got it ! and the fishies get so healthy at the FishY DR. that they actually grow on the way home! Your a Good GrandPa! I've always kinda liked the wizard of oz but then again I am not watching it again and again and again ! But I see your point! Sometimes it isn't feasible to repair things -like cheap vcrs they cost more to fix than it cost to buy a new one ! so out they go ! I realise we are talking DVD-media here but I think you have the right idea using regular media! Have you though of contcting verbatim and seeing what they say ? might even be some replacement media in it for you ( Keeping customer happy) and all! I bought some Maxell High grade DVD+R media that has HARD Coat Protection- have'nt had a opportunity to test them for durability only burned one so far and have found that my Philips DVD stand alone recorder does'nt like them atleast in playback won't play neither will my apex 1010w - but to be fair they do play on my norcent ! neither drive likes Fuji /Taiyo Yuden DVD+R media either and again the Norcent Player does . so I think it's not the burn speed 4x or the media just the players/recorders don't like them - I may get a BenQ or other drive that allows booktyping for birthday or xmas and try again with those two brands or atleast the FUji's I have quite a few BestBuy was out of MIJ DVD-R's that day !Mainly use DVD-R i have nothing against DVD+R media just started with DVD-R and have more of that. Well oh ! arniebear keep us appraised of what happens and remeber this ( The wizard never actaully gave the scarecrow a brain ! He hust put a Handfull of pins and needles in the straw under his hat. And when he thunk too hard! they stuck out thereby proving he was sharp! LOL! ) Peace & Happy Burning ( Sleep poppies Sleep ) and your little dog too!

@BIGTOXY69
Well I am going to take a look at it, I have a feeling it is from the player laser just burning into the dye. But I have left DVD's in a player overnight, cause I fall asleep, and they just play through and stay paused on the menu, never had this problem. I will probably contact Verbatim and see if this is just a unique problem. As for Dorothy and friends I just did another backup on a regular Verbatim we will see if it stands up, of course my grandaughter has moved on to the Disney movie Return to OZ, since the other one won't play.
I here good things about BenQ, and have been thinking about trying one out myself. Been looking at the 1620. My Plexie and HP640C booktype and it is great, no more worrying about format. Of course I have a boatload of -R disks to go through, but it has been nice for dual layers since they only came out with the -R format recently.

This is so strange..If the voltage regulater went bad it would be burning all the disc( if possible). However, I have never heard of a laser burning a disc. There is just not enough watts there to do it from an electronics point of view. I am looking forward to when you get it and post it's condition. If you do find it burnt and can hang a fingernail in it, that means you have a super laser !!.:) On the lighter side we all know that lasers get very hot under certain conditions.
( lack of air flow and older cars with CD players). Also, on some PS2 stuff there is a magnet that locks in the disc for spinning. Thats why sometimes there is a lot of noise when they start to spin. ( slipping disc while spining) If your disc slipped and stopped and the M-processer did not know, maybe that laser could burn..Please post your findings;
Thanks

Slim jewel cases are 1 cent/piece - still better protection than the armor guard or whatever marketing label they put on it which adds 30+ cents to the disc.

Okay, did not get the disk today the daughter forgot, knew she would, so I have to wait. She says the disk plays up to the tinman point then stops, when you look at the disk there is a completely circular scratch all away around the disk at this point, that is only that particular scene, beyond it the disk appears fine. I gotta get my hands on that disk, it will drive me crazy until I see her on Friday.
