new member with a shrink question

hi guys,i really enjoy this site and all its info.,so i decided to join finally.I have already gotten alot from the forums on the site,but i thought i would ask my ? anyway.I am fairly new to the dvd burning thing,i recently bought an nec d/l that i have been pleased with.I have burned a few of my own movies,and they mostly take around an hour with kb's at about 1500,while analysing from shrink.But recently some of my movies will go through that first stage on shrink,finish backup,and then start immediately analyzing again only this time it takes around 4 hours with kb's at only around 400.It sounds like maybe it is just doing a deep analysis the second time,has anybody else had this happen?i don't mind it taking long if it is increasing the video quality.I have checked my device manager and it looks like i am on dma mode.Does it just depend on the movie or maybe the studio?Also,decrypter didnt seem to make it run any faster.Also,what does buffer mean exactly,and is there any need to increase the speed with it?Thanks for any help,i look forward to any responses.

Check the 'Quality Settings' tab when 'Backup' is selected. There is an option to always do deep analysis (if movie needs compression). This will cause much longer analysis times (with increase in quality). There is also a selection for Shrink 3.2 Quality Enhancements. Checking this will extend the 'encoding' (actually transcoding) phase. I have both of these selected and use the default 'Sharp' setting for the quality enhancement. It is a matter of taste best judged by you. Some prefer different QE setting for differ types of movies.

Thanks for the reply,i believe i do have those settings checked on shrink,i do like getting the best quality as possible.It just seemed like it was going so slow,i thought i must be doing something wrong.But if the time it takes doesnt sound unreasonable,i can live with it.Also baffled me why some movies were going fast and others were very slow.

Welcome to AD :-)
OK your times are questionable, but you didn;t provide us with your PC specs so it's hard to say for sure? If it is an older system then it may take that long but if it is newer (in the last year or 2) then those times sound a little long.
Some of your movies may be going faster because they dont need as much compression. If you want to try out the fastest way possible and still get really good quality while using DVD Shrink And Decrypter then check out the very first guide at my website. That should produce the fastest times and the best quality backup's for you (link in my sig)

Thanks bbmayo,i did check out your guides,they are extremely helpful.Let me try to add some of my specs. here.The pc is a Gateway,about 6 years old.We just added xp with service pack 2.Also put in a new hard drive,which shows it has 664 mhz,512 mb of ram.We are using Pentium 3,which might be a little slower than 4.I think it does depend on the movie,if its one i really like i tend to leave most of the bonus features on there,which would slow the process down.I have been using Nero to burn,it has worked great,i can't tell the difference between my original and the copy.I usually just run the shrink backup before bed,and then its ready to go the next morning.So,like i said i can live with the slowness if the quality is better.Thanks again for any more insight.

Yeah those times are more than likely normal for your system. Until you get a newer processor there probably isn't much you can do about it either. Just keep your Hard drive defraged and PC clean of spyware and junk and you will be doing all you can...

Once you have done any re-authoring required in Shrink set it to burn via ISO with DVDD. You can also select it to verify if you wish. Then put a blank in your burner and hit 'backup'. Shrink will then do Deep Analysis (if required), encode and invoke DVD Decrypter to burn all automatically while you sleep, watch TV, etc.

i actually tried to burn an iso with decrypter for the first time,and when i tried to write the dvd it said there was not enough room on the disk,so i don't know what i did wrong,thats why i have been sticking with Nero to burn,since i somewhat have that figured out,lol.

Another question,on shrink preferences i do need to have set on dvd 5 right?since that is the size of dvd -r i am using(4.7 g).i was assuming dvd 9 was for dual layer discs which i am not using.i first thought that was my problem for the slow backup,but i did have it set for dvd 5.thanks.

DVD5 is correct for the 4.7 media, some reccomend a custom size of ~4360 so that burns are not too near the outer edge. Setting of DVD9 is for DL and was most likely the reason your earlier ISO burns with DVDD failed due to not enough room on disk.
