ok, I've been using this program for quite a while now. It was working fine and now it stopped working, both of them! I figured well Reinstall them once I do that they work fine. I can backup a movie with no problem. Once the movie is backed up. If I try to backup another one dvd decrypter nor dvd shrink will start up. I have the Icons on the desk top and it seems like it's going to start but it doesn't. Double click and nothing computer seems like it's about to run something but nothing. I try dvd Shrink and same thing. I reinstall again and works for a little while and then it stops responding again. I reinstalled my OS and the same thing happens again. Clean install and every thing and nothing.. What could it be..

Everything is the same. I can not get it to work. I have a Vaio desktop as well as a laptop, my wife has a compaq laptop and is funny because it won't work on the desktop nor the vaio laptop, but it works fine on the compaq laptop.... Weird...

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the settigs in my Anti- Virus and Firewall software. Check those first. If that doesn't work, go into msconfig and uncheck everything except Systray and Explorer. Then restart your system. See if Decrypter and Shrink will open. Run msconfig again and tick an item, shut down and restart. Try to open both programs again. If you tick a setting in msconfig and following a restart Decrypter and Shrink will not open, you've found the culprit. Just leave the item unchecked.

This might not help you but then again it might. Make sure you get the same version of both programs when your installing it again because ive been hearing of the website where you would get those programs being corrupted. Like DVD Decrypter has an update saying that there is a newer version when the guy that made the program actually quite making the program a version prior to the new one. When the whole big scandel was going down with Decrypter, the author of the program had to give up the rights to his site and they were trying to rid Decrypter all together to stop pirating users so what they did was put out the NEW updated version of Decrypter which ends up not working or Decrypting and it comes up with lots of errors. If I can find the article which I read this I will post it but then again it could be many other things that is not making your Decrypter work but just wanted you to at least read this and check that out. Thanks and sorry for the long post!

you might just try that anti-virus software you have a lot of trojans and spy/adware embeds itself into your registry and becomes part of such prog there fore only becoming active when you use the prog explaining why you can use the prog once I once had a virus that every time I opened a prog it would try to change my connection settings. I had to go in and re-enter my connection every time I got on the internet the virus software told how to get rid of it and that it was trying to call 900 numbers from my modem. just a thought as I am stumped

Well... anyone not using AV software is asking for trouble. XP with SP2 has decent security built in, but not everyone has XP SP2. I still use my aftermarket setup. In this case, I'd advise running a few separate apps to make sure the PC is clean. Ad-Aware and Spybot (both freeware), and SpySweeper trial from Webroot. Tests have shown these three in unison do an excellent job. You may be surprised at what you clean out. Run the Disk Cleanup in Accessories, if you have the option. Otherwise, you'll need to run a windows cleanup. Another good idea is to use a registry tool to do a reg cleanup. Things over time have a tendency to get displaced. If you haven't done a disc defrag in forever, it may be a good time to do so. With all the housecleaning done, if you still have a problem, then you'll have already eliminated a lot of possibilities. I'd advise full time AV and web protection such as a firewall. You can find much of what I mentioned at http://www.download.com , that's the big CNet software download site. Also, just in case you have one, make sure the protected files are removed from a protected recycle bin. It's normal cleanup to clear the recycle bin on occasion. By the way, when having problems like these, it can be a good idea to watch the task manager to see what's happening. You need to make sure something isn't using up the available memory and no programs are conflicting. Do you have any other burning or recording software on the PC, any batch writing software like Roxio's "Drag to Disk" or Pinnacle's "Instant Write"?

bilg25,
I was thinking the same thing; when DVDD went bye, bye there was an article from the guy who developed it here on afterdawn. He clearly said that we should disable the "check for updates" option in the setup and obviouosly don't send any emails to the address given on the credits page. This may not be your problem davidn00, but it is worth noting, especially for the Newbies, that this "check 4 updates" should be disabled .

AnyDVD is one of the tools I think of as a necessity if one is serious about doing a lot of backups. Slysoft is very good about keeping the decryption software up to date. Decrypter isn't over the hill yet. As for your Nero, the author of Shrink is working there now. So, if you see any similarities... Recode is an excellent transcoder and Nero is a top notch recording suite. So, you've made a good choice of software. However, there is better to be had. RB/CCE.

As for the update link, it just makes since to not use it. Nobody home and the man doesn't want to be associated with the app further for legal purposes. Though the DVD Decrypter site is no longer, the "page cannot be displayed" warning comes up, the Shrink page with its links is still available. http://www.dvdshrink.org/ With all the forums, I don't think it will be a problem getting a clean version of decrypter. Here at AD, Doom9, and MrBass are all reputable and have been downloading. There are others I'm sure. I've never messed with the update links and have had no problems. I don't know of anyone that has. As far as old software scams, there have been old versions and even compiled bundles of freeware that have been sold to the unwary. So, nothing new there. As far as the entertainment industry getting involved, they did their damage when they forced LUK out of supporting DVDD. Dr Shrink dropped out last year, so he got out of the fray before it warmed up.

Funny thing, with AnyDVD to handle any of the encryptions that are problematic in the future, both Shrink and DVD Decrypter have a useful future for some time. So far, a year later, Shrink is doing well using Decrypter and AnyDVD. DVDD will be a useful ripper, even if it needs AnyDVD in the future. To date it's still doing well on its own.

brobear,
Quick question,
I've been considering RB/CCE but don't own CCE yet. Does this combo "shrink" to DVD5? I've glanced through some threads and haven't been able to figure this out yet.

@davidn00,
I apologize for getting slightly off topic with this question but I've been wanting to ask it for awhile now hopefully you'll find it useful as well.

Thanks

DVD5 is what RB is all about. It's probably the best encoder setup available because it can use CCE. CCE Basic sells for about $50. For about $10 for a donation, you can get the Pro version of RB. It will sell for more once it hits the market as a retail offering; plus you receive updates for free. There will always be a difference between RB Pro and the freeware. A plus is that you can use the free HC encoder with RB. Not quite as good as the CCE, but close. DVD9s of 7 to 8GB can easily be encoded to a DVD5 using RB with excellent quality. Check out http://www.dvd-rb.com for all the info you should need.

I got it. I finally figure it out. Ok here it is. I tried what many of you told me but it still would not work. When I installed norton antivirus, it picked up a virus called "jeefo" the bad part is that norton was not able to fix it. What this virus does once is in your computer it infects every .EXE file. Anything is executable it will infect. Since a have a large collection of programs and drivers and things like that, it infected all the executable files. Once you try installing anything it will install fine but will affect it later on. Since DVD Decrypter is such a small file and once you install it you still have the DVD Decrypter icon as executable as well as DVD Shrink. it infected both icons and would run after a new install until got infected by the virus and would not run anymore. that is why it stopped working. Like I said NORTON was not able to repair the problem. I found in another forum that the people that were able to use norton to fix the virus had the problem of not being able to use any executable files in windows and programs, drivers and any .exe stored in the hard drive. What I used was mcafee and mcafee was able to fix the problem. It removed the virus from all the .EXE files and did not corrupt the file itself. I'm still able to install drivers and programs that I'm running of my hard drive. Eventhough this is a small virus according to the mcafee website it will cause more and more problems as you keep using windows. Eventually some people were not able to use paint and programs that are executable.. I suggest that if you download any kind of software from kazaa limewire and other P2P programs search for this virus and try to remove it asap. It will get worse until your programs start failing. So for me DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink is working fine now. I would like to THANK all of you for your help with this problem, as I will try to help others if is in my power to do it. Thanks all for your help with this problem and if you have questions about what I did let me know.. Once again Thanks... David

Did you run the 3 apps I suggested (AdAware, Sypsweeper, and Spybot)? I'm familiar with McAfee, another good app. I have a complete suite of Norton software and have been able to steer clear of problems like the one you've developed. I've run many AV apps and Norton has always ended up back on my PC. I don't think I'll intentionally infect my PC to try to find out if McAffee is superior on that particular virus. But usually, one of the 3 apps I mentioned will clear up most problems, if not taken care of in the normal weekly AV maintenance sweep. BTW, it's not paranoia having as many AV and adware apps as I do. I've found that in unison, one will pick up on what the others may sometimes miss. Combined, they supply more comprehensive coverage. Sounds like a good insurance pitch. LOL By the way, KaZaa and a lot of download sites are hotbeds for spreading virus'. Good AV ware is a must if one is going to be on the net much. I'd also suggest the Firefox browser, it's a bit more secure than most.

With the Norton I'm using, if a virus is in definitions, it picks it up in the auto scan and doesn't let it get loaded. Sounds like the virus got there before the software was added. Good AV controls and procedures stop most of this from happening. Also, something like Norton's Internet Security is a must, the firewall is almost a mandatory item now if one is going to be on the web. (Note I said like, McAfee is another good AV suite.)
