nero version: 6.6.0.6
dvdshrink version: 3.2
ok heres my problem, i use dvdshrink 3.2 to copy my dvds, i have never had a problem with copying my dvds. it normally took me an hourish to copy one. i have recently reformated my computer and since i have done that my dvds have been taking over 3 hours.
ive read other forums and it told me to check my IDE secondary and primary channels and it told me to set it to DMA if possible. i done that and i had the same problem. i also uninstalled the driver and then let windows reinstall after reboot, and i still have the same problem, ive defragged my drives and ive checked for spyware
dvdshrink is good up until the encoding goes to 9 - 10% then the rate just droppes rapidly and within 10 minutes to a rate of just 750 kbs when before it was going 3000 +
what does people recommend i do in this situation cuz im stummped, do you think it could have a conflict with the version of nero.
should i just reformat again and start over cuz everything is baked up on my other drives??
also i have uninstalled dvdshrink and nero and then reinstalled them, and also redownloaded them from different places
please help if you have a solution

sounds like you are having the exact same issue as i am.some movies go really fast, but others,i like to keep the special features if i really like the movie, take a long time.i have pentium 3,so i think thats why mine is a little slower.i just start mine before i go to bed and they are done the next morning.i wish i had more answers for our problem, but there may not be anything else we can do.

Check that you have the newest version of firmware for your burner. Windows doesn't always find the latest firmware for all burners. Also, when you installed Nero 6.6, did you go to the site for the latest upgrade.

what speed is your CPU and how much compression is used on these movies? Are you using quality enhancements? Also, are you ripping the movie with DVD Decrypter first before using Shrink or are you using Shrink to rip as well? Are you using a Plextor drive at all?

Are there a lot of programs running in the background? It sounds like your RAM is being overloaded.
Can you post one of your Nero Burn logs? Nero save itself a copy of every burn. You can find them on the same directory as the Nero installation. typically C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log
Don't post your Nero Serial number. It starts with 1a23 or something similar, near the top of the log file.

Another quick question...
why did you reformat your drive? Did you happen to install something new in your system? If so what?
Try uninstalling Nero make sure you use the Nero Clean tool Nero.com/enu/General_Clean_Tool.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://ww2.Nero.com/enu/General_Clean_Tool.html this will make sure everything from Nero is off your system. Then try backing up a DVD with just Shrink.. Just back it up as an ISO to your hard drive for now. This could at least eliminate the possibility of Nero being the cause. Also have you tried reading the original disk from both drives? This could also eliminate the drives as being the problem.. You see it's a process of elimination :-) Also did you make sure that you updated the drivers to your motherboard when you reloaded? Also what operating system are you running? If XP when you reformated did you format in NTFS or FAT32 file mode?
I know lots of questions but if you can answer tham all it will only help us better understand your problem :-)

@bignasty3,
I have folks check the usual suspects first, especially when no system or media information is given. DMA is one of them. Other overlooked items are the quality settings in Shrink. They will double your encoding time. System resources should be checked. Removing and reinstalling ailing programs helps on occasion as well.

hi Frank,i believe i have the quality settings all checked in shrink as well.you mention that it can double your time, but is it worth it,do you get better quality this way?i seem to get really good quality with mine, even though it takes a few hours sometimes.

I usually will use them if I am going below 70% in compression. Other than that I don't use them. I remove all but the main movie so I can stay above that most of the time. I used the quality features in "The Aviator" because it had a fairly large main movie title. It ripped in about 1 hour, burned in 15 minutes. My normal rip times are about 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the movie.

@bignasty3........
a hour or a little bit more isn't really to bad with these newer movie's, beause they are trying to put so much more files on
the disks to prevent backup ect... for example the movie
HITCH had 124 files for the whole disks and all, but the actuall
movie only was 8 files if i remember right. my self i only
backup the movie only, takes a lot less time, beause i don't
care about all the extras ect. you might want to give that
a shot. and i think DvDShrink has slowed down a bit latley...
of course not knowing your spec., but thats about what it takes
on my set up with, WindowsXP, 60gHD...ect.
good day..........
free............

My friend is having the same slow down issues with Shrink. His setup is only a few months old and is as follows: DMA Mode is fine, well over 30 gigs free space (defragmented), 512 ram (PC2700), AMD Sempron @ 1.5 GHz, 16x Samsung DVD-ROM, 16x NEC Burner. He will be able to complete a backup at 100% in 20 minutes or so. If it is at say 60% it will take up to 3 hours. His rate will drop below 1000 somtimes. Any ideas? He used to be able to complete backups of 60% in a hour or so. Has anyone else had this happen and what did you do to fix it?

Possibally he has some spyware or virus on his PC.. Also what new programs has he installed recently? These could be using up his resources? He can also make sure all his drivers and firmware are up to date Firmware/IDE for Mobo/Video/ Also could upgrade his fans in the PC to keep that processor cool..
Cheers

I am having this problem as well. With a new computer, have burned 15 DVDs using Shrink or Decrypter+Shrink with various, sometimes 40%, compression without a problem, with Nero burning... whole process used to take around 30 mins or less. The computer is an AMD Sempron 3100+, 256MB PC3200, 60G harddrive with 38G free, defragged, on the primary IDE channel (DMA mode). DVD-ROM LTD-163 and Toshiba burner on the secondary IDE (DMA mode, did a fix of the PIO already). I know the RAM in the computer is limited and will be upgrading, but this setup worked great initially. This computer has very little software on it besides some basic young kids games and has had the extra services disabled from memory. I got this computer as my dvd burner/ new computer for kids since lots of burning seemed to trash my old computer.
So now I'm trying to burn with almost no compression (99%), re-authored movie only, and the encoding is dragging at around 1,000 kB/s. Tried with and without DVD Decrypter first.
Since this is going on during encoding (decryption and analysis are ok) isn't that just DVD Shrink (3.2) directly with my hard drive, since nothing is actually being burned to DVD yet Nero isn't working on it?

Nero does not start until the burn process begins.
Your RAM may be limiting the speed. Sometimes these various .exe files have a way of sneaking in. Before you know it you have lots of programs using your system resources.
Check and see what other processes are running. Click Ctrl/Alt/Delete to open Windows Task Manager, then click the Processes tab. Now click on the "User Name" to sort the processes. You can safely "End Process" on most of the processes that have your user name. Leave taskmgr, explorer running.
If you want to know what the different processes do, try doing a Google search on the process name.
Once you re-start your computer these processes will start up again. You are not deleting them, just disabling them for the current session.
A RAM upgrade would be something to consider. That is the best way to improve your encoding speeds. You will see a big difference.
Any time Shrink is having problems you should remove and reinstall it. This seems to get things back to normal and only takes a few minutes to do. Make sure when you use the program to uncheck the Deep Analysis feature. I think it is on by default. You won't be able to do that until you are actually getting ready to back-up your DVD as the quality settings are located on the Backup DVD menu.
