Why is dvd shrink so slow at encoding/compressing dvd video. Some projects take 5 + hours. If I use dvd decryter it is 15 times faster. The video is encoded in 15-20 minutes. How ever decrypter can not fit 8 gb on a 4.7 gb disk. Does dvd decrypter have that capability? What is the fastest way to make a back up of a dvd? And is 5 hours normal for this type of procedure?

@chaseme5
I dont know bout anythin faster but I know that it should not take 5hrs. For me the combo i use is:
1) DVD Decrypter
2) DVD Shrink
3) Clone DVD 2
using all these to complete the entire DVD including Special Features etc... takes me about 3hrs to the most... soo im not sure what u are doin to make it go for 5hrs did u read the guides if not here is the link
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/
I hope that helps

Whoa buddy, I think you're confused about what Shrink and Decrypter are actually doing.
Dvd Decrypter will only get rid of encription of a DVD (well, it does other functions like iso read, write, etc, but anyway, we're talking dvd movies right now). It will not do any compression (aka shrinking). That is what DVD Shrink can do. Now, you can let Shrink rip/decrypt and compress at the same time (which could be why its taking so long especially if your machine is slower) or you can rip with Decrypter and open those files with Shrink and let shrink compress those files by reading them off your hd rather than your DVD for hours (obviously this takes more hd space as you end up with a compressed version and a non compressed versin of the movie on your hd).
So, to state it clearly, DVD Shrink can do all functions of ripping and compressing. DVD Decrypter can only rip DVDs. It cannot compress. So, if its DVD-9 than you would HAVE to compress it with shrink or some other program in order to burn it to DVD-5. Okay?
I also will rip with Decryptor first, compress with shrink, and burn with nero (either through shrink or directly using nero).
My longest dvds are about 2hrs at most. That's with deep analysis and high quality encoding settings in shrink. I have an AMD 2600+ with a gig of ram. Your mileage may vary.

The machines I use are Pentium M's w/1 GB of RAM.
I use Shrink (in conjunction with DVDFORFREE) to read and encode (which takes about 20-30 minutes total) and then Nero to burn (takes about 10-12 minutes at anywhere from 2.4X to 8x....once in a while will burn at 16x to see if quality is OK and it usually is fine).
Total time for each DVD - under 45 minutes.

DVDD does not compress,it will remove encryption and rip to hard drive.
Shrink and DVD2One compress,I'm sure there are more proggies that compress as well, but DVDD is not one of them.
It would take like more then 5 hours for DVDD to do that!
use shrink to compress,I have 2 G's of memory, it takes me 30 minutes max!

Thanks for all the feedback. I found that when the ide controller is set to dma no problems with the rips and rip time goes to 1.5 hours. However sometime the drive goes back to pio. Then that causes severe problems. I guess I need to check the ide driver each time I rip something. I ripped AVP with no problem when the ide controller was set to dma.

Yes, your drives have to be in DMA mode for any decent times. Windows will revert back to PIO after 5 or 6 CRC errors or sometimes after a firmware update flash. If you notice a big slowdown, check that both IDE controllers are set to DMA.

Read the 3rd paragraph of the PC basics from ScubaPete's guides at this link. It goes into DMA/PIO and how to set them. My buddy Pete has a lot of good information and answers on his site.

Glad to hear that. I had no idea where my number was until a thread was posted around the year end. I checked and was very close without even knowing it. Glad to hear Pete is getting things sorted out. I'm going to forward a PM to you I got this morning. It might be of interest to you and Pete. Later Frank.
