Shrink is not burning your movie, it opens a burning program to use for the burn, like Nero.

Yhe burn speed is actually controlled by the burner along with the correct laser power levels. this is all initiated by the burning program so if no write speed is specified it will usually write as fast as possible.

Before burning the burner performs a multi-step check of the media to figure out how much laser power to use and at what speed. It actually writes a test pattern on the disc and then reads it back to see if things are working right.

This even occurs during the burn in most burners. That way when there is a big thumbprint on the disc the burner will slow down so it can write through the smudge.

It is usually wise to specify a speed slower than the maximum speed as determined by the burner. I burn at 4X.

Thanks for the information. Obviously IŽm totally new to this. IŽd thought the max burning speed was determined by the hardware. Like, when they sold me the external drive, they told me it could ONLY burn at 4x. Oh, well. Thanks, you informed me and educated me.

Drives need to recognize the media so they can burn correctly. For example if you used a previously recorded DVD-RW it may need a 1X burn speed, regardless of a higher speed setting you may select. They may have been referring to the burner's maximum speed.

fasfrank: thanks for the info. I thought when they sold you a 4x burner, that burner could never go beyond the 4x regardless....oh well!

It does not really matter what program you are using. If you set Nero or any other program to burn at "Max" then the program will allow the burn to occur at the fastest speed possible as determined by the results of the OPC during lead-in.
