I followed those instructions, and when it goes to load the CodeUpdate.elf, and it goes to the screen it supposed to, my screen turns black & white and is just scrolling like a news paper??? Why would that update file be in PAL? Is it?

if you want PAL use the PAL codelist, if you want NTSC use the NTSC codelist, and the problem with your black and white screen, may not be the codelist, it may be your scart socket make sure it can support NTSC and make sure the switch is in the right place.

My Scart Socket? What is that. Remember it only happens with this one program (When the codelist updater runs)

Ok here's the deal. I have a PS2 Slim SCPH-750001 and when I put in my Action Replay Max. My Ps2 says Please insert a Ps2 formatted Disc and goes to that red screen thing. Anyway, I can boot up Action Replay through Swap Magic but now my question is. Can I use the codes from Action Replay and get them to work on a backup ps2 game? And if I can what order do I have to insert the disc's in? Thanks in advance

hi i have a ps2 SCPH-75001 US, and when i was out looking for a mod chip i didnt wanna go too invasive with my new ps2 so i bought a boot cd...but when i looked @ the swap magic website there was a new boot cd that had action replay built into it so i thought it was a good deal so i bought it...when i went to find codes for kingdom hearts 2 i found them but just to find out that ALL the codes for action replay max and not the ancient action replay...so i bought action replay max assuming that the coder boot cd was the same as swap magic...and it should be the same right?...except when i do the whole deal it just never loads....after the loading screen its just black...everytime i do it...has anyone out there also faced this problem?

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/340518

check the bottom update on the thread above. I found a site that will help with the conversion of the codes. Looks like to much work for me though so I will not be testing this....

The problem lies in the fact that you are loading codes off the Memory card which is detected by the PS2. And therefore sometimes wants to go to the browser. ANY TIME I have a memory card in my PS2 and power it on and then try the AR Max to SM boot it always either comes up that I have a bad disc or goes to the browser. I have both AR Max Evo and AR Max with a 32MB Memory card. I have tried using the Memory card version and it fails every time. I get 99.99% success using Evo. Now I don't want to be the one to tell you to go out and buy Evo but if you know anyone who has it see if you can borrow it or have them come over and try it that way. The New SM does not except AR Max codes per say. It uses HexDecimal. Basically A-F and 0-9. If you get the new SM you will need to read up on how to convert AR Max codes to HexDecimal.

-Power Off PS2 (from the back, not Standby Mode)
-Remove all memory cards
-Insert USB stick
-Power on PS2
-Boot up AR Max (You will need the AR Max Evo Disc. It does not require hardware like the AR Max Memory card device to boot)
-Select Expert Mode and load codes
-Select the game and codes you want
-Press Start
-Now insert the SM disc
-After you get past the final confirmation and the system goes to a black screen you will see "Now Loading" REMOVE the usb stick
-When SM gets booted insert your backup and press X. NOT O
-It may fail once or twice depending on how many codes you are loading. If this happens try reducing the codes you have selected. Also I have noticed that sometimes it's not the number of codes but certain ones cause problems.

I have the same problem, tried everything said in here and didn't work.

I will explain step by step what I have and what I want to do.
I want to use a backup of Action Replay Max Evo previously loaded with Swap Magic CD. Then, I want to apply cheats to a game which is ALSO a backup, ALSO previously loaded with Swap Magic CD/DVD, depending on what game I try to load. So the order would be thus:

1- Load Swap Magic CD.
2- Insert Action Replay Max Evo and press X to load it.
3- Search the cheats for the game and load them.
4- Load Swap Magic CD/DVD with the cheats of Action Replay Max Evo enabled.
5- Insert the game I want to play with the cheats previously enabled, then press X to load.
6- The game loads, but then memory card menu appears and after it, the red PS2 screen, like I were trying to load a backup directly.

I have a PSTWO, and I use Swap Magic 3.6.

Where's the damned problem?. Even removing the memory cards (as somebody told here before) it goes to the browser menu. How to solve this?. Thanks in advance.

It might be that you are trying to use a BACKUP of AR Max. All of the instructions I provided are for using the ORIGIONAL AR Max disc to use cheat codes with your PS2 Backups. It works 99.99% of the time. I NEVER could get a backup of AR Max to work at all. You may just need to break out and use your origional disc, or if it was somehow damaged and you are using your backup go buy a "new" one. It would save you a lot of time and it is not a bad investment. Espically when you think about all the money you would save by backing up your "origional" ps2 game in case of damage and by not haveing to "buy" new ones in case anything happened. Seems like you could spare 30 or 40 bucks and just get a new AR Max. Just a suggestion, that is what I finally did......

ok, but also I should have added don't come bitching at me if it doesn't work for you.

And it is the AR Max EVO with the USB Stick. You can not use a memory card for storing the codes. the PS2 Browser by design does not recognize the USB memory device so there is a good chance that SM will boot the game and not the browser. One of SM's functions is to load .ELF files off from CD's and Memory cards. Even though you tell it to boot a game if a memory card was in the PS2 when started SM will sometimes try to load an ELF from the card. But when no ELF is found or no Card it will switch to the browser and then the browser tries to read your backup which it can't and says it is not a valid PS2 Disc. That is why using the USB stick for code updates works the best. Below are my steps with some notes but I do not guarentee results.

I have PS2 (Origional Release) V10 i think
Fliptop with SM 3.6
AR Max Evo with 16MB USB stick

Procedures:
1. Power Off PS2

2. Remove all memory cards from PS2

3. Power on PS2

4. Insert USB Stick and Action Replay disc

5. NOTE: If the codes you want to use are for an older game then just use AR Max with no USB stick and use the codes on the CD. This works much better

6. Once AR Max boots, if you have not already, download updated codes for the games you want to use it with. The codes will save to the USB stick. Or to save time you can just use your computer and download the codes

7. Go into the Expert mode and find your game

8. Select the codes you want to use. Warning some games do not like a lot of codes. Example FFX. I usually load up no more then 20 codes at a time starting with stuff like level increase and items and then save the game and then do it again until I have everything I need, ending with codes for stuff like Inf Life or Magic, which of course won't save on a save file.

9. Press Start and you will have the option of starting with or without codes. Select with and press start or X. You will then see a final message to make sure you have the game disc insered. Press the Eject button on the PS2 (NOT THE FLIP TOP BUTTON) and insert SM disc.

10. Now press X or Start and put your hand on the USB stick if you used it. When you see the black screen with white text that says something like starting game. Remove the USB stick.

11. When SM boots up use the fliptop and insert your backup game and press X.

12. NOTE: Never press Square. Square is not for booting games. It is used for booting programs like if you have the SNES emulator on a CDRom or some other .ELF file on a memory card. If you press square it will not work to load the game.

13. If you go to the PS2 browser screen and get an error of the Red screen then try it again. Be sure to start at step one and Power Off the PS2. If it fails again try disableing some codes.

14. NOTE: There are some codes that will cause a game to fail. Example MGS Snake Eater. I can load about 20 to 25 codes at a time. But there is one code (i don't remember which one cause I'm not looking at it) that will cause the load to fail every time. Even if I just use that one code.

15. I will not guarentee that this will work for everyone or that it will work 99.99% of the time but this is the procedure that I follow and I will have problems maybe once every 3 weeks. There are some games that I just can not get to work at all. Need For Speed II gives me all kinds of problems. But for the most part it will work. I have show this procedure to my 14 year old and it fails for him 99.99% of the time. I don't know why. I watch him do it and he does everything that I do. Maybe it is his timing in pulling out the usb stick. Not sure

Mainly I don't want anyone to go out and spend money on the AR Max Evo and then bitch at me cause it's still not working for them. There are many factors that could cause a problem different versions of the PS2, your Backup disc brand, etc... All I can say is I use what I have and the procedures listed and it only fails if I load to many codes or on some games. But even those games will work after 3 or 4 tries.

I've got a store bought original ARMax Evo + 16Mb USB key. Am I right in guessing that (unlike the original AR non-max non-evo) I won't be able to boot up a backup copy of SwapMagic (or indeed a backup copy of anything)?

If not then I guess I'll just go and order a DMS4 :)

This is what I do:

I just use regular PS2 memory cards, or the higher MB ram memory cards. I suggest you get a Memory Card formatter program in case. (The AR replay max sometimes doesn't save the updated codes correctly and corrupts the Memory card. So if you don't have a Memory card formatter program, I suggest you get it. Without this program, Sony would of gotten more of my money (hehe).

Anyway.

This is the simple steps I do, I don't have a flip top i used the "Duct Tape" method.

1. Load up Action Replay Max (Remember i am using the regular memory cards.)
2. Select your Game and your codes.
3. Get to the Screen where it says "insert your game disk now, an press OK."
4. at this time, if you don't have a flip top, you have to make sure you realase the tape holding down the button on the right side. as you open it or the CD will keep spinning.
5. Insert your SWAP Magic 3.6 Disc, or compatible.
6. If you don't have the flip top, put the tape back down on the button, and close the lid.
7. If you did it in a flowing fashion, the CD will start spinning normally.
8. Press OK on the screen.
9. Then SWAP magic will load up.
10. Then insert your game and it should load up normally, but with the Replay max codes.

This works for me 100% of the time.

Sorry don't have the Version number of my PS2 as not home right now.

Could be. I use to have a V4 and it use to play regular movies, backup movies, Music CDs and PS2 games. But then over time it stoped playing Backup Movies, then Music CDs, then regular movies and would play nothing but origional PS2 games. Then about 2 years ago it stopped doing that. Of course everyone knows that is a common problem with the PS2. Hell I even have a Sony DVD player that did the same thing with Movie Backups, Music CDs and then origional DVDs. If your PS2 will load backups normally with no cheat codes then this is not the problem, however if you have an old PS2 and it has trouble loading the backups normally then you can probably forget trying to load it up using cheat codes
