To everyone who posted their procedure for using Swap Magic with AR Max to boot backup games with cheats enabled:

Does it work with the new Swap Magic Coder 3.8 because I've tried and tried and every single time, I kept getting the black screen. Arrrghhh...

I hate to be a bother but I just bought an AR Max and I have a modded PSTwo and it uses Ghost Clips.

Can I use the AR Max with this thing and still play burnt games? Because I can't get the disc to stop spinning so I can replace it with the Swap Magic disc.

SonicTH,

I read somewhere in this forum that you have to pull the little clip that you put behind the reset button out so that the disc stops spinning. I think that was it.

sitosans,
Yes, you should be able to boot your AR Max disc with an original Swap Magic 3.6.

Has anyone got an answer for my question though?

Ah, I tried that. Alas, it doesn't do anything because it doesn't have enough give to cause the disc brake to trip.

I'm thinking about just breaking down and buying a Slim Tools set so I can just get Tool A (its only $6 even though I just need that one part). Tool A can be removed with ease and it can replace the clip (and I assume that's all I need to do since I have the Cap covering the disc sensor; I just need to be able to trip the drive sensor at will).

Yeah, it's probably best if you just buy Tool A then, unless if you can make a similar tool yourself from the picture. Which Swap Magic disc have you got? 3.6?

Yeah, I have 3.6.

As for the drive, I was experimenting to make sure that's what I need to do (I'm temporarily using the tissue method to see if I can force a drive sensor trip and it looks like I can). I'd stick with the tissue method but I need a quicker way to turn the drive on and off (the wad sometimes is hard to put back in so I waste time trying to get it to fit again).

So that hurdle is now behind me but when I switch the disc, I can't seem to load the game (when I use Normal Boot, it takes me back to the browser while Special Boot takes me to a black screen). However, I'll solve that issue now since I beat the hardware issue.

The tissue method? Wow...haven't heard of that one.

Both the Normal and the Special Boot option give me the black screen (I don't get the browser screen). Have you tried taking out the memory card or USB flash drive before Swap Magic loads? I read somewhere that if it takes you back to the browser, then that's because you didn't take out either the memory card or the USB flash drive (depending on where you store your codelist).

Also, have you tried using DVD Loader as well?

Don't worry, after I posted that I did the memory card thing and it worked so I know for sure my AR is good to go now.

I'm going to order the Slim Tools kit today.

Also, the tissue method is usually combined with tape and it works the same way as the Ghost Switch system (you have some tape locking down the disc sensor and you stuff tissue into the small cavity that contains the drive sensor) only its free and kind of shoddy.

What I did was kept the Ghost Switch cap on the disc sensor and used tissue to replace the Ghost Clip (because the clip is applied internally and I needed a way to lock down the drive sensor from the exterior of the PS2 so it can be taken on or off as the situation warrants).

So basically AR Max works with Swap Magic 3.6 but not the new Coder 3.8?

ATTENTION: To all of you have provided answers and procedures and to all of you who are asking questions and having problems. Please read the following.

Not to get into my personal life to much but lets just say that I had to get another PS2. Previously I had a V11 old style PS2. I have been using AR Max and SM3.6 for some time with no problems. In having to get another PS2 I had to settle on a referb. I could not find a new OLD style PS2. The model that I have I believe is like a V8 or V9. I an following the same procedures that I always have and now it does not work. I can not get the damn thing to work even once. I don't think there is a problem with the procedure at all. There are a number of different variations on the procedures and all of them work for most of the people who post em. I believe the problem lies in the older equipment just doesn't like it. I have have some utility disc I can not get to work on this older model and they always worked before. For those of you that still can not get ARMax and Swap Magic to work right the problem may be that you have an older version PS2 and there is not much you can do except get another one. However finding an old style PS2 NEW is not easy

I am having some trouble, so i will post what i am doing so, someone can tell me what i am doing wrong.

What i have:

A fat ps2

AR MAX EVO With USB flash drive, To store codes on.

Swap Magic 3.6

What i am doing:

I insert the USB flash drive, with no memory card.

Then i insert my Action replay EVO disc.

Then i select "Expert mode"

Then i wait for the codes to load, then i remove the USB flash drive.

Then, i select my game of choice with my codes of choice.

After that, i press "Start"

Then when it says "To ensure that your game disc is inserted", i eject my Action replay EVO disc, and insert my Swap magic 3.6

Then swap magic loads up, then i put my back up game in like i normaly would.

Then i press "x"

Then i see the ps2 browser come up very shortly, then the error message, stating that i do not have a ps1 or ps2 game inserted into the ps2.

Any help?

You are removing the USB flash at the wrong time. Follow the same procedure as you have listed but leave the flash drive in until after you have selected your codes and inserted SM. When you press X for the final time and the screen goes black and it says Loading Game. That is when you remove the Flash Drive.

Loyalty07,

Try removing your USB flash card right after AR Max codes have loaded ie. as soon as it says it says "Launching Game".

I have the Swap Magic Coder 3.8 and it doesn't work but Swap Magic 3.6 should work...If this can be confirmed then I shall try and exchange my 3.8 for a 3.6.

The best solution about this crap is just buy Swap Magic Coder 3.8, find the Action Replay v1 codes for your game or convert them, and enjoy. No more headaches with this shit.

If you have Swap Magic 3.6 original disc then all you need to do is put in ARMax, let it boot up, select your cheats, press eject and put in Swap Magic. Let that boot up and then swap it for your backup game.

I know for me the version of Action Max replay I use is called Armax-evo swap magic edition.
It is has been compiled to work just with swap magic.I don't have a usb stick.
I have swap magic coder 3.8 and I just press the triangle to get the disc to stop spinning. Change discs, press triangle again, then X.

If anyone wants this version get it here

There is a read me included telling how to use it and play backups.

smokyrain,

Can you get your ARMax Evo cheats to work when using it together with SwapMagic Coder 3.8? I had Coder 3.8 but couldn't get it to work with my ARMax (not Evo) cheats. I heard that earlier versions of SwapMagic have more compatibility..?

Thanks for the link by the way.

I have yet to try that... I have so far just used my swap magic 3.8 to boot the AR MAX disc.... then played a ps2 disk but not a backup disk yet.

I will give it a try tomorrow and see how it goes. I just wanted this disk as it has the memory manager, media player etc.

I had read in another post this version is slow to load, and yes it is but it works.

Anyhow your welcome and will get back to ya tomorrow.

Since you have SwapMagic Coder 3.8, you can use it to run different .elf files, which will also give you those programs you want ie. Memory Manager, Media Player etc...
