Video Playback Pause, Stutter and Breakup

There have been occasions where I create a video using DVDShrink where the playback on a standard DVD player will pause, stutter and the picture will break up. I can play this same disc on a PC and the playback will be flawless. I have read on this board and at other places where suggested solutions are:
1. Use only DVD -R media
2. Use a name brand media like Sony
3. Record at a slower rate
Does anyone have any insight on the technical reasons why playback is only a problem on the standard DVD players? Does the PC playback employ a more robust routine for error correction or a larger buffer?
I'm quite curious as to the cause and solutions.

These solutions are the way they are because PC installed Drives are more compatibale with multi media (diffreent Discs) and also burning at a slower rate can save the film senses been skipped either sound or image runing faster than the other.
The Brand Name solution si going back to the old saing quality is better than quantity. I hope that helps

What speed are you burning at? What make and model dvdrw do you have?

I am having the same problem. Every disc I make works well until I get half way through the movie and it stops. It really breaks up a whole lot at the end. I bought some media from shop4tech and they were around 22 cents a piece. Would any on recommend media. I have a lite-on 8X burner. Please help.

Ed,
Shop4tech is not recommended for buying media. They are known for selling fakes. Use this free proggy and give us the media code. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
If they were TY's give us the numbers and letters around the hub.

The burner I WAS using is an HP DVD Writer 400c. It's a DVD+ device that came pre-installed on my HP Model m470n Media Center PC. I have since installed a LiteOn LDW411S +/- dual format drive and bought some Sony DVD-R discs rated at up to 8x that I'll record at 1x. Thanks again for all the great feedback and I'll keep you posted on the results.

What exactly is firmware?? I still dont exactly know what that is... I personally sont have a problem backing up anythin but i would like to know what firmware is and what its function is (my guess is that it is a driver but am unsure)???

Dirty lasers!
Quality media and a slow burn speed at 4x max will normally take care of these issues. If not,try compressed air or a cleaning disc in that particular stand alone.
You may even want to dabble with the plus format and see if there is any improvement.
Borhan9: Firmware is your burner's programming.This firmware contains a list of the many different media out there.It goes by the burner manufacturer's recommendation on what:
What format it is allowed to burn
What mfg code it is allowed to burn
How fast/slow it is allowed to burn
What increments of burn speed it is allowed to be burned.
Burner manufacturers run many tests on all the media.If not they,then some other company perform these tests.This leads to updates on firmware.Your better quality burners do the updates quite often.Older and generic models seldom have updates.
If you are not having any problems,then best to leave alone. Why fix it if it ain't broke?
It's handy to have your fw version noted, along with the site of your burner's manufacturer where you can get the correct fw.Avoid hacked fw,unless you know what you are doing.
Majority of cases: firmware updates may be performed when you run into a newer media,like the 16x that is coming out.I've run into 1 issue with an I/O magic 16x burner.It would spit the ritek-g04 disc out when it was in the lead-in phase.A simple update took care of that.

borhan9. If you have to update your firmware,google for the exact model's fw. Or find a site like this:

Some burners have auto update programs.
You download that update file from a recommended site,and install it like a normal program.Follow the directions to the t.I had to do this to an I/O magic 16x right after I pulled it out of the box.I had a heck of a time finding out who made that unit.
I've still got the original fw in my benqs. B7-C9 and B7-L9. No problems with 99%+ success rate.There are many updates available to me,so why bother?
When you find your site for the update,bookmark it for future use.

Firmware is the "Instruction set that it "Burned" into your DVD Burners chip set by the Manufacturer. It tells the drive how to read, write and recognize disks made by various Manufacturers.
It goes out of date when new disk types are introduced or new Manufacturers Codes are added. If you don't keep your "Firmware" updated, your drive might not be able to read or write at its top efficiency or it may not be able to read some disk types at all..
The best place to find the latest firmware for your burner is, of course, the Manufacturers Web Site, but there are third party programmers who (now and then) can improve on the Manufacturers system.
Personally, I prefer to stick with the Manufacturers "Ware" because it usually installs quickly with Windows XP and requires no messing around with the system setup.

Hello.....firmware,software..underware....what about Video Playback Pause, Stutter and Breakup problem....I have the same problema but not all the time...I think that the problem is those cheap blank dvd that have..but not 100% sure...

@puchy - you're probably 100% correct, it's usually bad media, sometimes with a dash of too high a burn speed, but generally it's crapola media :)

thanks creaky...the media that a have cost me, $4.75 for 25 blank dvd....it was my firet time doing this thing, so i bougth the cheap stuff to practice...next time I'll buy the good media.........and for those people that have problems with software, I used dvdd and dvdshrink and those worked great

This is the model burner Lite-on DVD-RW SOHW-812S, the media says line2 DVD-R 2 3 0406161636-470985 it also has a star and IFPI GA4B. I have tried burning at 4X, 2X, and 1X. I did just update the firmware yesterday and the 1.7 flash update. The disc identifier read

I changed media to HP 8X that I bought at Office Max. They seem to be working better. But is there anything else that I need to do.

Ed,
I'm with creaky. In order to have good success with dvd backups you're going to have to use some better media. HP is known for buying from cmc mag which is complete garbage and so do noname brands, memorex, phillips, and retail store branded medias.
If you want to make quality backups (no freezing or pixelation) I recommend verbatum or taiyo yuden which are the two best medias. Sony, fuji (made in japan), and maxell are usually good choices too. Keep the burn speeds to half the rated speed of the media (4x for 8x media, 8x for 16x media). I burn all my backups at 4x and use verbatum DVD+R media booktyped dvd-rom. I NEVER have any and will not tolerate any freezing or pixelation.
If you are useing DVD Shrink I also recommend setting the target dvd size to 4400 or even less with poor quality media.

It has been my Considerable Experience (Well Over 1,000 perfect DVD Burns in the last 3 years) that even the Low Grade Media, and the Very Low Priced Burners, will perform satisfactorily (producing disks that will last for many years) if the Computers Power Supply is putting out enough 5 volt Wattage to keep the burners Laser Beam Hot and Consistent through out the entire burning process.
It has also been my Considerable Experience, as a person who Builds Computers from scratch, that 95 percent of the Power Supplies that come with Factory Built Computers, and Bare Bones Kits, are not nearly powerful enough to keep a DVD Burners Laser Hot Enough for consistently satisfactory burns. They may say 450 or 500 watts, but the Current Required (Amps) that the 5 Volt Leg needs to run the DVD Burners Laser just isn't there. You need a power supply that will allow your system to pull 220 to 240 Watts on the + 5 Volt Leg (minimum) to keep everything (all systems) consistent during the burning process. Anything less and even the best burner, with top grade media, is going to suffer.. If you keep that Laser Hot, your bargain basement media will burn satisfactorily.
I burn middle grade media at its Top Rated Speed, with Printed Paper Labels applied before I burn the disks, and I very, very seldom have a bad burn. All disks are burned with Nero, and each and every burn is "Verified" after completeion. Economy Brand media that I burned three years ago (with and without papler labels) still plays perfectly!
Closing words: I have fixed a LOT of other folks DVD burning problems just by changing their computer power supply for them.
