To start with a while back I had motherboard go belly up on me and had to replace the motherboard and memory. I wound up reusing my ATI AIW 8500DV video card, Soundblaster Live 5.1 card, 2gig AMD CPU, PSU, and optical drives. The OS was originally XP SP1a with the SP2 update. This time I loaded it with XP SP2. All seemed well but I started having a problem with videos I capture using my ATI AIW. I recorded them as I had done prior to the MOBO toasting, capturing the video as MPEG2 and they look great even after converting them to VOB files using DIVX2DVD. That is until I pull them into Shrink to covert it to an ISO file. Once I pulled the videos into Shrink and preview the file is when I noticed that all fast motion or fast cut scenes seem to look real jittery meaning motion trails when someone crosses across the screen or waves their arm then it seems like each frame hesitates for a fraction of a second so you see a trail of their movement even with no compression needed.

As I said this was only happening on captured video through my ATI AIW card at least it was until the other day when I noticed the same thing when I was backing up my DVD of Into The Woods, which was brought into the system through my DVD burner using Decrypter. As of now this is the only DVD that I have had this problem with (no problems with other DVD?s either before or since then) and can be recreated the problem with Into The Woods on other PC?s I have, all with different boards, CPU?s, video cards, etc?
Also, I have tried both the previous and latest versions of Shrink and Decrypter, different ATI video drivers and media centers software both newer and older versions with the same results.

While my problems still may very well be hardware issues or even a bad OS load (I have not tried going back to XP SP1a) is it possible that Shrink is the problem? Before I have to consider rebuilding my system what I am really looking for is if there is some setting I am missing that deals with motion in Shrink?

Update:
While I have not found a resolution for Into The Woods I have at least found one for my analog recordings made through my AIW cards video recorder. I usually use the DVD High setting to record with to get the best video quality. This especially since I am converting a fair amount of my old VHS tapes to DVD. Some of these tapes are ten years old. Now while the record setting is irrelevant to some point it is a point of reference since I had been using this setting without a problem prior to my mobo taking a dive.
For those not familiar with AIW recorders you can edit the those settings such as frame rate, filters, bit rate, etc... If fact these settings are fairly extensive.
Now while the default settings prior to and after the new mobo had not changed, the default settings should not have been a problem. However I decided that since I was not finding a resolution anywhere on line I needed to try something before blowing out my system which except for the video recordings is extremely stable.
First setting I tried which would seem to be directly connected would be was the Motion Estimate Quality setting which by default was at 70% or roughly 10MB. Minimum setting is 0% or 1MB. For Contrast and to see what effect it had I went to the minimum and made a five-minute recording of something with fast motion and quick screen changes. This made a noticeable improvement when it got to Shrink but there was still a bit of motion trails. Keeping the Motion setting still at 0% I next tried changing the bit rate settings from Variable to Constant leaving the max a 8MB per second and then retested using the same section of video as before. Again, there was improvement but still not perfect.
On a whim I left the two changes in and changed the De-Interlacing options from the default of Encoded Interlace to just De-Interlace and retested again with the same section of video. This time success, motion was smooth as silk in shrink and in the final DVD product.
So now the big question is what caused this in the first place? For now though that problem at least has a work around. As to Into The Woods I will have to think that the problem is similar but since it is the only DVD I have that does that I just will not worry about it and just be extremely careful with the original.

very interesting prob glad to see you found a back door but am intrigued one queston can you not burn w/out the iso. ok two the only settings I can think of in shrink that might have a positive affect is the smooth or sharp settings in the quality settings? I know elementary but quite often the simplest answer is the right one and the right answer is right under our noses.

Thanks for the reply. As to if I need to burn it as a ISO file, I am running it back through Decrypter for the burn process using Roxio and quite honestly I do not know of another way to burn a bootalbe DVD without making and ISO file prior to burning. If there is can you enlighten me how to do this? It would save me some time and disk space for those projects that do not need to be shrunk.
Also I have some episodic shows that I am fitting four 22 minute episodes on one disk which requires about a five percent shrink to fit the disk.
As to smoothing in Shrink, Yes I have but it has little effect if any that can be seen and the bad part is you have to burn the disk in order to tell which if you need coasters is fine but I have enough already thank you....(LOL)
Regards,
Jerry

I've heard several members here preach about the crappiness of roxio you might do a search and see what you can find most have said dump it. Nero can burn the video_ts w/out creating the iso I think roxio cn alsobut have never used this app so as far as instruction I have none

I know Roxio is the dreaded program of these forums but I have never had the problems using it that others have posted about it. It's been a while since I used Nero but the reason I pulled it out and went with Roxio was Nero 6 writes over the codec's that my AIW card uses for the TV tuner section, effectively kills my AIW. It can be resolved but requires hacking the codec's so that I can get it working again and if I update the codec's it kills my AIW TV tuner again. Maybe the lastest version will not cause that problem. It's been a while since I ghosted this box anyway. Might give it a try, again. Thanks for your input.

only reason I suggested is that the shrink app does some voodoo even if you wish it not to.(@ zero compression there is still a noticeable dif) although I don't think the difference would be so extreme as to cause the changes that you are noticing they would be a contributing factor. did you try out all the quality settings mentioned in my first reply? also I don't know that this would be able to do a lot as it sound s like you've got quite a bit of encoding going on but you might try out dvd-rb w/cce can be found in software tab and has more quality enhancing features than I could name here w/out writing you a novel pple who do episodal dvd's preach on this app this might be the answer if you are patient it takes a while but is quite the powerful app also might take care of any codec issues through the use of AVI synth I am still a newb w/ this program but there are many here that could explain better

oh hell here's the link for that novel quite extensive reading but all the info is there if you should ever need it http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/97052
good luck

The current settings I am using now seem to be working at this moment. Video output is as close to looking like the source as possible considering that these tapes are fairly old (10+ years)and not the best quality to begin with. With that said I took a look at the link you included and will probably give it a try. Really can not say it will improve on what I have but worth a try.
Thanks again for the info.
Now off to do some reading and sip some Brandy.
