I use -r mostly seems to play in more players.
I'm sure you can get other views on this.
I would just use what works for you.

Definetly the plus format -Taiyo Yudens!! Because the plus format can be book-typed to dvd-rom on certain burners!

If you have a quality dvd burner that is capable of booktyping dvd plus format to dvd-rom,the compatability on stand alones is phenomenal. This booktyping will fool those stand alone players into thinking they are actual dvd-roms,the most compatable dvd format!

Not all burners support this feature. Benq,Nec,Plextor,Lg are just a few I know of that will booktype.

Now if your burner doesn't support this booktyping capability:
All players are different!Oh yea, most burners are different too! Quite a bit of variation between all the lasers.Your burner will also tell you which media and format it likes.

That's why it is best to try like a 10 pack of some good Made in Japan media to find out which will work for you.Look at those labels!
Burn a few of each format,4x speed or lower and test them out on your stand alones or any other drives that will play your backups. They will decide for you with great playback. If they don't like a certain format, you'll get some sort of "No Disc Inserted" error.

Thanks a lot guys. I starting burning dvds about a year ago with a sony dvd burner (530a model i believe) that burner kinda gave up on me so i recently got a sony 720a. id forgotten which media that i used to buy. i copied a dvd with the a DVD+R disk and when i played it back on the sony burner, the sound was horrible. It was muffled and had crackling. I thought i had a coaster, but i tried it on a stand-alone player (cheap one at that) the sound was fine. the sony burner is a 16x dual layer capable burner and i used 8x disks. Im not sure why it only burned between 1.4x and 1.5x. Any one ever have trouble with memorex media? I bought them cuz i used memorex cd-r's for over 5 years and never had trouble. Not sure if they are good dvdr's though.

I use both + and -. All my equipment plays both formats with no problems. I don't even booktype the +R. I only use quality media (mainly TY, some Verbatim), so there's not really an issue of which one my burner prefers either! I just look for the better price on TY inkjet printables at Rima.com and Supermediastore.com...

I almost found it hard to read that. I had to laugh actually because I thought you might be joking, but I know a lot of people don't come to this site and use the search function or that question would not have been asked. Memorex is by far the worst media you could possibly buy and if you don't believe me try doing a search for it here. :-)

LMAO, I'm not ridiculing you Burn1234,but you may have been done-in by the memorex corporation,AKA Memosux!

The majority of memorex dvd media uses a lower quality media manufacturer called C-Magnetics Corporation. C-mags for short. Some burners, like mine, have no trouble with them, but many others do.That's always the first thing to check on when someone is having problems with memorex media.Memorex is ok with cds and vhs,but way behind in the quality battle for dvd media. They have a couple good manufacturers, but very hard to figure out which ones they are.Best to avoid them completely.
Burning dvds is very extreme, and the cheaper manufactured media will usually crap out!

Burning at 1.4x and 1.5x sounds like a problem with your ide channels. Btw,if you get 5 or so burn errors in a row-usually crappy media-then windows will automatically revert your ide channels to pio mode. This isn't good. This will slow you down among many other scenarios. You want dma or udma if available.

Post a burn error log if you can,but edit out your serial # .

Edit, bbmayo beat me by a minute, damn dialup!!!!!!!LOL
Hey, we're on the same wave-length!

I've had great luck with both formats. But as previously stated...media quality is by far the most important factor. Nice slow burns are importants as well. Why pay more for that 16X media when to get a good solid burn 4x or lower burns are prescribed?

Burn1234, you're a good sport about the memosux. Don't let venomx05 try to recruit you in his memorex cult, LOL

If you want to double check your ide's, click on the first link of bbmayo's sig for his guides. It'll tell you how to check and re-set them if needed. Excellent guides from a great member!

The Nero log will tell you towards the top of the log, dma off or on for primary and secondary.

Good Luck buddy and hope you get your dvd backups going!

bilbo65,I would have agreed with you up to last week. A buddy of mine gave me a 30 pack of memorex +8x he bought at walmart. $15 for them and they were cmags.I told him he could have gotten fuji yudens for $10 a week earlier at staples! Now my benq has been tainted with memosux media.

They burned ok at 2.4x on a couple of adult oriented dvds that he wanted backed up. I figure he'll be viewing them, not me.I believe I forgot to try them out in my players, damn!I'd like to check how they scan. He'll be pissed if he can't watch them, LOL

BTW, anyone seen THE PORN IDENTITY?

Nothing really to add except a little to saugy's 1st post about dvdrw's capable of bitsetting/booktyping. Add these to the list that are capable of doing so. Lite-on's, most sony's (rebadged liteys), most phillips (rebadged benq's), new memorex's (rebadged litey's) and ricoh's. I guess I should have said any rebadged litey or benq. Also the NEC's require modified f/w or a crossflash to maddog f/w to be capable.

Stay away from that memosux media. Also beware of HP, phillips, no name, and retail store branded media eg. staples, compusa.

Whatever good stuff they got on sale:

This week is sony 1x-8x at staples/compusa/bestbuy- spindles of 50 for $20. The japanese sony + are yuden000-T02,Taiwanese + are SonyD11. For the sony dash 1x-8x- both taiwan and japanese are Sony08D1

Circuit city: Tdk 25 packs 4x for around $8. Only get the dash format.Taiyo yuden makes some or all of their dash format,so far. Cmags are some of the plus tdks! Why buy cmags when you can get the taiyo yudens for the same price?

Last week: Office depot, their own brand name 100 pack spindles. Riteks on both formats, Ritek-r03 on their +8x and Ritek-g05 on their dash. 100 pack spindles only, buy 1 get one free: $60 for 200, boy they went quick!

2 weeks ago: Staples had Fuji 8x's. The japanese ones were Yuden000-T02.

3 weeks ago: Office depot 100 pack spindles of 8x,all made by ritek.$28

You can tell I really like those Yuden000-T02's and local- on sale media.

Edit, Be cautious on store brand name media. Those office depot 100 pack spindles are/were riteks, but the 25/50 or future 100 pack spindles may not be so lucky. Plenty of valuable sources here to find out on those office depot riteks. Sometimes we take a risk to help find the great bargains.

Hey mort, I just burn a few full printables a week.

I forgot to post that.

Full hub printables: Verbatim data life plus +8x coded Mcc-003 and also maxell +8x coded Maxell002-00/made in japan.

I don't know about office max,but most likely same cmags as memorex.

All my backups are on our fav. verb MCC003 anymore. I don't even buy any non printable media now.

Friends and family members collections. My little brother had about 300 to be backed up. I've got another buddy who's got a porn collection to back up, LOL.

I also had some other friends and coworkers who burn so I'm always picking up media for them, and I pick a pack here and there to try for myself like those verbatim +r dual layers for $3.50..

I've also sold quality media on ebay and I am very thorough when I list them. 100% feedback.I've even ticked off quite a few of those sellers who had no clue what they were selling!

It's pretty bad when I go into one of these stores, the workers ask me a lot of questions on dvd backups, LOL
I'm always obliged to help out.

I also do quite a few +rw's on tdk's. I have those floating around for my family members to pass around.

Throw in the 30 -40 vhs home movies and about 20- 8 mm camcorder tapes all on dvd,all spanning about 18 years of home videos and all my family members have copies of them. That's when I first found out media quality was critical on my tv dvd recorder.

I just print the really good, new dvd's I buy. I do buy a lot of the cheaper b-rated horror movies.I can get movies dirt cheap at flea markets/used cd-dvd stores/ and garage sales.

Not too many good movies have come out lately.
