I'm doubtful if its the movie I am trying to burn. I will give this DVD Dercypter a shot but if if it was an age factor why would Natural Born Killers work (it on old movie) work, but the new version of Fear and Loathing in Las vegas work. Age appears to have no relevence in what will and wont burn.

brobear pretty much said it all. Try ripping them to your hdd 1st with dvdd then if that doesn't work try AnyDVD. I'm yet to find a dvd that can not be backed up useing these utilities. Here are some guides. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide2.html

The possibilities are very limited; user interface (you), the software, or the source. With Shrink doing a good job on some movies, but a problem on just the one so far, it seems we can almost eliminate the transcoder. Since the computer is burning some movies, we are assuming no hardware problems. So, the question is, why will Shrink not transcode the particualar movie? I was just covering the situation with Shrink; no updates in the past year. Since Shrink is a proven transcoder, that leaves only the encryption, physical condition of the disc, software interference (you'd get that one with other DVDs as well), or misuse of the software.

The Nero is simply the burner and has nothing to do with the transcode. The freeware DVD Decrypter could burn just as well and there are a number of burning apps available. I like the CopyToDVD as well as the ones mentioned. But we're getting away from the problem.

As Mort attested to the fact, under the situation with encryption, it makes a lot of difference. Notice I didn't say all movies over the past year. Sony's ARccOS, the bad sector enccryption and some of the structural encryption are new and Shrink will not work alone with movies having that Encryption. If you doubt my word, try Resident Evil 2, Little Black Book, Grudge, and I think possibly the last Bourne movie caused a bit of a problem (there are others, I don't keep a list). Also, in the past, it was suggested to rip with Decrypter when Shrink ran into a decryption problem. At one point that was posted on the Shrink site. So, be aware, age can make a difference (if the newer movie has new encryption). I wasn't saying that was the problem in this particular instance, just stating possibilities without going into a search of the movie's lineage.

As I mentioned, the possibilities are very limited. More than likely you'll find you didn't do something correctly, such as not getting a clean source for the transcoder, or you have a problematic disc. DVDs will play on a standalone that won't record. You might consider getting a program like DVDInfoPro to check for disc errors. Follow Mort's advice and you'll probably be okay; rip with Decrypter or use AnyDVD. For certain tasks, I often use both at the same time.

Perhaps this guide will help you update your firmware. (Although the link to your firmware has already been given to you.) - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50100

Installing your firmware:

1. Carefully read the readme that came with the firmware update
2. Don't run any other programs at the same time
3. Don't have any disc in your burner at the same time
4. Restart your PC after you have flashed it.

Alright I may have found the problem. I looked for this Pioneer dvr 109 firmware download else where. During my search I found a picture of the product and noticed a small difference between my burner and the picture. I went back to the website I bought it off and realized the DVD burner I bought was actually called the PIONEER A09XLB. I am not sure if maybe my computer is recognizing my burner as something else... is there firmware updates for the Pioneer A09XLB?

I have burned about 800 InkJethubPrint 8X Linkyo -R DVDs and only had 3 coasters (and I think those were from power glitches). Bought them at superemediastore for 36 cents each (got free ground shipping) Why 800? We have a video business, I used to use ProDisc silver InkJethubPrint but about a year ago their quality went down a bit.

They're pretty descent believe me :) I have used them / tested them several times with numerous recorders and they acted pretty well most of the times. I can throw in a couple of scans if they are welcome.

@ brokenss

From the Nero log you have posted there are couple of things that can come to on'es mind. The "0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) " usually comes as a result of media that dont work well with the drive one's using (not secessarily of bad quality but possibly yes). If i am not mistaken you havent posted the MID of the Fuji's you are using, so i really cant tell. They are probably FUJIFILM03 if 8x -R media or ProdiscS03 if 4x -R media but i can only guess. So you could just try with other media.

Of course upgrading to the newest firmware will most certainly help. In addition sometimes for this type of error a badly installed 3rd party ASPI layer could be the one responsible, so check on that one too.

Good info though. No need for the scans; your post was sufficient. The scans are more helpful when showing problems.
Just a note on ASPI for those unfamiliar with it. With new OSs like XP there is little need for it unless a specific app requires it. It is rare to see it needed with Windows nowadays. Here is a link for anyone wanting to get an understanding of ASPI. http://aspi.radified.com/ For a good install, when needed with a newer OS, something like ForceASPI is useful. It has the proper tools for removal of any problem ASPI setups and can install properly. With all the codecs and varied software I run, I've yet to need ASPI loaded to the system. I use Nero, but it carries its own ASPI files for when/if they're needed.

Ryan32us,

Your LG drive should be capable of bitsetting and I would be happy to help you set it up but answer a few questions for me 1st. Note: this can only be done with dvd+r/rw media.

What proggy do you use to compress/transcode?
What proggy do you use to burn?
What speed are you burning at? (4x is recommended)
What media are you useing? Use dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and tell me the manufacturer and ID.

Also, since the equipment is a bit dated (forgive the unintentional pun), have all the firmware updates been done? You have them for ROM drives, burners, and standalone players. Firmware problems are notorious for causing compatibility issues. Just an addition to Mort's pertinent questions. Bittyping can sometimes help with older equipment, but it isn't a cure all.

My lg drive is firmware a301, there was an issue with from new, this change improved, I would be afraid to check for upgrades since so friends have done that and are receiving msg's of compatibility when they try to make backups {shoulda left well enough alone}.I use Nero 6.0019 usually, I use dvddecrypt, dvd shrink{newest i think 3.2},dvdfabgold { no success with this one yet}I always burn at 4X speed { max of my drive} As for media I have tried many, verbatum, memorex{ with a lot of success, maybe I am the exception hehe},maxell, and fujifilm.Mosytly whatever is on sale and has worked in the past.Currently I have fujifilm 8X spindle here, this is the dvd info
