Pulsar ""If it aint American, it can never work" is how most people perceive the Americans' attitude to life." ya know that is funny because i would say that is totally wrong to what hard working americans think. Our politics may show a slight sign of that in some matters probably more in others but what is so wrong with trying to influence other countries with are way. When every time some country has a problem they run to the usa what would you do if the same person kept coming to you with a problem you would show him how you make it work wouldn't you, because that is what you know.
Maybe if we influence the rest of the world pepole will quit immagrating here and our goverment can start taking care of its pepole instead of being the worlds police force. let me guess other countries hate that we took care of Hitler, Sadam, that we help out in somalia, eteophia, that we are going after all the terrorist groups, helping to build finacial stability in 3rd world countries while so many other countries stand by and shake there finger. All of this done with our militarys blood and thier families left behind so the whole world could benifit right oh yeah us tax payers pay for that. But i dont mind paying for others pepole security just want a thank you and some respect. Want to know what is sad it is not the average pepole in countries its the goverments of the world that either hate or like each other I think most people in most countries would get along if put in the same room with one rule no goverment.

Slim, I did not say that was how Americans think, I said it was how other people PERCEIVE America.

Get your facts right please!

As to what is wrong in influencing other countries, since when was it Americas' job to interfere with other countries poilicies. Just because your administration thinks it is right, does not mean that other people think it is right. The last thing I want is ANY country telling me how we should run MY country. We are perfectly capable of making our own mistakes, we do not need other peoples interference.
There are a lot of people who object vehemently to Americas attempts to control the world. I include myself in that statement.
What would you say if we told Americans what you can & can't do? Not much. We all know that the Americans went into Iraq because of the oil. If you think it was for humanitarian purposes you are are clearly dillsional. If that were the case then why not go into North Korea or China or Syria, the list is endless.
Don't forget we are all entitled to our opinions & we should also respect others. This seems to be a problem that American administrations have, they don't respect other peoples' opinions.
If someone joins the military, they have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT to complain if someone shoots at them, that is their choice.
Many British soldiers have died too, as well as the countless civilians. If your idea of "democracy" is Guantanamo Bay, they You can keep that democracy. America completely screwed over the UK over this farcical war, so much for our "special relationship". You treat the Brits like criminals when we come & visit. What is all that about? I for one will not be visiting the US in the near future.
I will stick to the South of France for my hols.
America is not the only country who help the worlds sick & helpless. But the intervention of America in other countries affairs has sparked lots of hatred to anything western. We could do with less of that.
This "debate " could go on. I am not keen on what my government is doing, it is a shame you cannot think for yourself.

slmh1296, britian & the commonwealth was fighting the germans & italians for over 2 years & the russians were fighting the germans for over 6 months. the united states was a newbie in that war & learned painful & costly mistake but they did not win that war as is was the united nations that did even tho that organization did not come about til 45 in san fransico. in somelia, the us forces got their ass kicked by a warlord. the 2nd war in iraq was an illegal 1 even stated by the united nations. it was to prevent wmd to be developed by saddam & was stated by your own wmd inspectors that there was no wmd there. canada fought in the 1st gulf war & is in afghanistan fighting there now but notice we don't have any body fighting in iraq because it is an illegal war. canada, the united states & mexico signed the north american free trade agreement back in the late 80's early 90's. nfta has ruled against the us about 7 times on the softwood issue but does the us listen, no & instead orders a 19% tarrif on our softwood that your builders want but that your lumber companies say is hurting them. even the wto has backed canada on this. thing to remember, powerful nations rise & eventually fall. england was like that for over 300yrs but the us won't last that long, be lucky if they last as a super power for another 50yrs.

Your kidding, right? I thought, by some of your posts, that you were somewhat of an intelligent person. I was wrong.

@pulsar: We sure did go over there for the oil. Wait a minute. Where is all of that oil, and why have the gas prices gone up, over $1.75 per gallon, in the last 2 years?

look at history, no country stays as a power or super power forever. the roman empire(both east & west) lasted almost a thousand years, england about 300 years. the us maybe another 50 years than will be either china, india, a conglomerate of nations or a world government. that is if nothing happens before than.

It won't happen, ddp. I more than likely won't be around 50 years from now, so if what you say ends up being right, you can yell out to me, "I told you so!"

We all know that Iraq has the biggest store of untapped crude oil. The whole point of invading was a vain attempt to ensure that the oil supply would stay stable. Oil for aid, does that not ring a bell? I am amazed that with the resources that the States has, that it is not used more efficiently. If I am not mistaken the US imports oil in the "driving season". Why not make the cars more economical? What is the tax burden on a gallon of fuel?
The reason the fuel is so high is because Saudi Arabi limits production of oil to maintain high dollar per barrel prices. They can do this because they have the most efficient (comparibly) of extracting & shipping the oil to other countries. OPEC meets with the Saudis on a regular basis to try to encourage them to increase production for the western world. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. The only answer is to utilise the resources that each country has & not to be to reliant on other countries supplies.
The UK has its' own oil supply, but our refineries cannot process the oil effectively. Instead of changing the refineries the oil companies decided to sell that oil & import more suitable oil. If that was not a short term move (due to the cost of changing refineries) I do not know what is!
Don't even get me started on the whole WMD fiasco. 45mins? yeah right.
this was simply a ploy by the UK & the US to induce fear into the publics eye & therefore give an apparently valid reason for invasion! Are we really that dumb in our governments eyes? It's just a shame that so many soldiers & innocent civilians had to die in this war. THe only people who agreed to the invasion was the US & in the UK . The UN did not agree entirely with the reasons for invading. To say that we have "God fearing Christians" as leaders, they have overseen many thousands of unnecessary deaths. Not sure what is Christian about that! But then again the Christians slaughtered people by the thousand in the name of God. Nothing much changes & we never learn by history do we?

The problem with history is that it is doomed to repeat itself, no one learns from past mistakes. The Roman Empire died because its troops were spread to thin covering its empire and it could not withstand invasion, it rulers/leaders had become corrupt, and its people complacent.

ddp I agree America can not remain a superpower, at least not as we know it now. This countryt sells its technology, and it land holdings to the highest bidder, and is no longer capable of sustaing itself. What we used to make in our own factories is now outsourced, and we have become dependent on others. Someday we will wake up and the country will no longer belong to us and I hope you are right about the 50 years because then I won't be here either to see it.
