Depends on the amount of compression needed and if you are doing the whole disk or just the movie.

You can buy a dual layer disk and make an exact 1.1 copy of the DVD but they are running about 5.00 for one disk. You can also use DVD Shrink and compress to a single layer 4.7 disk using the deep analysis and max smooth quality enhancement, it will take a some time but it can be done.

Yes you will not have the exact quality that the original has. If you want the exact quality then use the dual layer. You can also use DVD Rebuilder and Cinema Craft Encoder which will give as close a quality as possible. Or just buy the original.

As arniebearstated it will depend on the amount of compression used, that is why he mentioned DL and copy 1:1 that way there is no compression, just an exact copy. Shrink does a great job, but so do a variety of other programs. Recode 2, Intercopy 3 (now version 4), CloneDVD 2 are just afew. For big time compression I recommend Dvd Rebuilder with CCE Basic encoder (CCE cost $), but the free encoders that come with the Rebuilder Installer package are all free. They do a great job. I use the Pro version of Rebuilder and CCE Basic awe-some quality even with high compression.

I seldom use any encoding/transcoding software other than dvd-rb/cce. I'm a quality (instead of speed) kind of guy and I'm still too tight to buy DL media. I haven't yet seen a need for DL media with the results I get with dvd-rb/cce. Sorry, of topic since this is the shrink thread.

I'm with ya Mort81, I know we were discussing shrink, but I like to challenge others, like like yourself, to check out Rebuilder with CCE. With that program you can definitley hold off on DL media. I do have verbatim dl media, which I like a lot and not had any problem with them in regards to standalone players.

i always use shrink (bar one film that it was having none of can't remember what it was) and however large the original i can say it always produces excellent results, a combination of a full disc analysis, then backed up in sharp mode and taiyo yuden discs never fails for me, and any difference in quality is not really that noticable if at all.
