When this happens, it's usually due to too many things running in your system at the same time. Use your task manager to stop them and check your system for adware and spyware and remove it from your system. All these things will cause your system to drag. In addition, you may want to clean your harddrive and then defrag it so it will run more efficiently.

@YOBUZZB and anyone else who is in the know

I understand how to use msconfig to check what is running at startup, what I don't know is what is required to be running at startup. Is there some sort of guideline to go by?

In my task frame at the bottom of the screen I have my spyware icon, popup blocker icon, msmgr icon, nvidia icon, volume icon,etc. How do I know what the bare mininum is? Don't all of these items take up cpu?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

@9mmruger1, there is a lot of stuff running on your machine just by what you stated their. You can kill your msnmgr, your spyware blocker, your popup blocker and nvidia (your video settings). The volume control isn't hurting anything. When you go into msconfig, you are only stopping these processes at startup, and if you have spyware, you're not going to stop alot of them by using msconfig, you need to go to your run registry located in local machine and current user. I don't know your specs or what type of machine you have so therefore I can't tell you exactly what you should have running, but basically, you can kill 99% of it through task manager under your computer name, not under SYSTEM or LOCAL SERVICE.

@crozzman

Thanks for the input. When I get my system back and can look at the startup settings I will post them and maybe you could give me some timely advise as to what I should leave running.

thanks again
