I was wondering what an average time should be for using DVD Shrink with a tv season DVD set like 24 for example. DVD's with 4 one-hour shows on them are taking me around 5 hours to encode. Is this excessive? If so, any ideas on what I could do to speed up the process? I have not had any problems with the copied version, it just takes a long time to get there.

Are you using any other proggies while DVDShrink is doing its encoding? Are you online? It's best to exit out of every program and let DVDShrink use up all the available RAM it needs, which is at minimum 512 or little under (just a guess).
From my experience, usually DVDShrink encodes a normal 2 hour movie in under 20 min's, give or take a couple of minutes. So, your 5 hours seems quite a wait. What are you PC specs? Do you have any other programs that you use to "rip" files?

Make sure your hard drive(s) and burner(s) are DMA enabled...
Have you defragmented your hard drive recently?
Make sure you're adware/spyware/virus free...if they're running in your background, they could be using some resources that could've been allocated for Shrink to encode...
Are you backing-up the entire dvd or using just reauthor mode? If your back-up includes the menu, then that would take some extra time to your encoding...Try just using the reauthor mode and just add the episodes in orderand getting rid of useless audio channels...
Also, you could use the edit the start/end frame for each episode to help Shrink decrease the need to compress the file even more...
 - Ideal way to deal with the MPAA~RIAA

I am not using any other apps or online while using Shrink. I keep my antivirus and antispyware programs up to date and regularly defragment my hard drives. I wondered if my IDE configuration could have an effect. My current configuration has my system/application drive as Primary Master (PIO Mode, DMA not available). My storage hard drive, where the ISO file is created, is Primary Slave in Ultra DMA Mode 5. My DVD recorder, a Plextor 716A, is the Secondary Master in Ultra DMA Mode 4. My cd-rom drive is the Secondary Slave in Ultra DMA Mode 2. Is there a better configuration for the components?

Don't know what is effecting your Shrink times however; I have found that on occasion Shrink reports that it is going to take a long time to complete it's task. When that happens, I shut down Shrink then reboot my computer.
After rebooting, I start Shrink and the amount of time to complete the task drops Significantly. If nothing else helps, give it a try.

@gsanta:
Have you tried running the disc through decrypter?
Just a thought.

I will try running the disc through Decrypter first to see how that goes. Could my IDE config stated above be the problem? What is the best configuration to have?

gsznta,

That should be in DMA mode and not in PIO. Right click the drive and uninstall the drive and then re-boot and let Windows re-install the drive properly
On my system My primary IDE channel drives are my Hd's. On the secondary IDE Channels I have the burner set up as Master and the DVD-Rom set up as Slave
Sounds like your OS is having conflict problems. D/L a free registry cleaner ( google for one) and let it clean up your registry as that will cause OS conflict problems

I was able to uninstall the driver for my Primary IDE channel, let Windows rediscover it, and both hard drives are now in Ultra DMA Mode 5, but it didn't change my times any. I also tried using DVDDecrypter in file mode before using DVD Shrink. Using both the files from Decrypter and the DVD directly, DVD Shrink is encoding at a maximum of about 850 KB/s, and says it will take a little over 2 hours to complete a 100 minute movie which is at 75% compression. I am using a Pentium 4 1.5GHz processor w/ 768 MB RAM. What else can I try?

@gsanta:
Have you tried unistalling and reinstalling DVD Shrink?
Have you checked your registry for proggies that might be running in the background without your knowledge, not sure if it's RAM related, but it's always good to rule out just the same.

@gangsta, Just a thought but do you have DVD43 or AnyDVD running in the background? If so, close them. I found shrink and DVD43 will fight eachother and really slow down the encode time. I took Razor Blade Smile and had DVD43 and DVD Shrink running at the same time as a test. Left the little green smiley face there. The movie took 2 hrs and 17 minutes to back up with shrink. Encode rate was down to 1.6k or less. I closed DVD43, closed and reopend DVD Shrink, and it only took 43 minutes to back up the movie. Encode rate went up to 6.5k and the buffer size went way up too but I didn't write down the numbers. It slowed down as in the picture below, but it seems to do that towards the end of any movie. Both copies are fine, just one took way longer to do it's thing. Using DVD Cloner2, i get a copy in 25-45 minutes, but you were asking about shrink.
the not encrypted status comes up when you have DVD43 running also. When shrink is doing the decoding, it comes up with numbers and letters ie a key. Like i said, just a thought. Here is the thread where i found out about another DVD43 and shrink conflict:
