I have a LG-4163B dvd burner with firmware 105 (the latest). I have purchased many different brands and speeds (upto 12x burns on +R, and 8x on -R) and never had a problem (aside from the occasional scapped disk). Recently I got these memorex 16x dvd-r. They fnckers only burn at 4x. When I run nero disk info it says ...

manufacturer: CMC
MID: CMC MAG.AM3
Write speed: 4x

Is this a problem with the burner or the media? (of course the burner manfacturer will blame the media manufacturer and vice versa)

thanks in advance

MEMOREX MEDIA IS LANDFILL MATERIAL ! ! !

I apologize for getting loud with you over this, but if a person was to lurk around before posting or starting a thread, that person would realize that there are no Memorex sympathizers here at After Dawn.

16x cmags!! Now the sh*t has hit the fan!!!!!

I can't wait till memorex uses cmags on their dual layer media.Ritek on them for now,but as usual with memorex: They will outsource them to cmags to make a few clams.

How do those 16x cmag backups look on your stand alones. You may have to burn them at 2.4x!!

Most likely when LG tested this media, they would only allow 4x max burn speed to be safely burned using that MID code of memorex, in their latest update.

$13 for 50 discs is NOT a deal if they are CMC Mag Corp! You couldn't give me those coaster material ... I suppose if you're going skeet shooting they would be worth buying, but I can't think of any other reason

they could always make a fine set of coasters all over the house.
1 time use frisbees at the park.
cheap mirrors for the bathroom (shiny side facing you)
you could always use them with the sun, in your back yard, have them reflect light inside your house to save on the electric bill.

Oh god.... not another Memosux CMC MAG crap. This is definitely a media issue. Just for reference only, I did check with "rpc1 forum" and your LG's firmware is current "A105". Scrapped those Memosux and get yourself other high quality media such the famous Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell, and hopefully your next backup will be successfully burned.

before the '<insert any proven crap media here>' advocates turn up to start more arguments about their limited success stories with bad media, all i can say is i wholeheartedly hate CMC Mag media with a passion, and with 16x i expect to see a plague of (biblical proportions) of threads with bad burns due to landfill media

dagnammit! - i swore i wouldn't comment on bad media this weekend!.

@tls1 - you're in good hands here, the other guys's is good, the force is strong with them :)

Hi All.

I hear what you say, and I dont disagree, but I have a new issue someone may be able to advise.
I have a Panasonic E85H DVD Recorder.
My gf sent me 100 Memorex 8x DVD-R's.
I heard they are suspect, and I get regular coasters on the PC's burner, but in the Recorder, always fine.
Tonite I did some burning on the Recorder. Every Memorex has failed.
I gave up after 5 and used another brand, TDK and all fine.

What gets me is surely my recorder is an issue? Can I check the manufacturer of my DVDR's as I can check these failed ones and the previuouly burnt ones.

Any advice would be helpful

Cheers

@tdale - download dvd identifier (free) - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

use it to identify exactly which Memorex you have

Are they REALLY that bad? I've burned many many many 8x-R at 8X and manybe 1 or 2 failed in the middle of the backup. I have randomly tested many of them and they seem ok. Even these 16x buggers do backup ok, it's just that they do it at 4x (probably because at anything higher there will be problems).

But one last question, when you run the Nero drivespeed and it provides the disk info (as in the first post), the write speed is reported eg 4x, 8x, etc). Is this something stored on the blank? Or does the burner somehow perform a test on the disk? And if it's stored on the disk, does that mean that in my particular case, the firmware has intervened and recognised this brand and overrode the 16x stored on the disk and indicated 4x (for my protection...hehe)?

thanks!

Thanks Creaky

I got DVDInfo after my post, the Memorex is ProdiscF01.

I really need to ascertain ofn the Recorder is playing up. I had 2 x 50 packs of the Memorex and onto the 2nd now, so I am perplexed that it will not now burn them.

I tested by burning again, but avoiding the clip that it was on, no joy. It comes up with the Check Disc message. I DVDInfo'd a memorex alreday burned form a while bcak, and its got the same code too, so no batch change (which I would have preferred, just to get an answer)

** INFO : GET PERFORMANCE Write Speed Descriptor(s)
Descriptor #1 = 5540 kBps ( 4.00x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV]

** INFO : MODE SENSE Write Speed Descriptor(s) [Legacy Command]
** WARNING : MODE SENSE Is Obsolete And Not Always Properly Supported

@tdale - what's the model of your pc dvd burner ?, maybe it can't support 16x discs, maybe the firmware can't handle them etc etc
ps Prodisc aren't that good i don't think....

plus do the dvd identify on a disc from the first lot of 50, sods law says they're a different manufacturer to the 2nd pack.. One of the reasons i have this in my signature ..Memorex/CMC - don't let them near your Burner..... - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/195438

Hi Creaky
My burner isn't a PC burner, it is a Panasonic DVD Recorder. Whiloe the ProdiscF01 may not be great (<y PC burner, BTC doesnt like them much), I have 100 blank Memorex ProdiscF01's and half of them have ben burnt with my Recorder ok. The infrequent coaster, that is all. My concern is that it wrote many fine, now it wont write any.

Cheers

yeah but the problem'll be the less than great media, most likely not the standalone machine. most problems (on PCs anyway) are too high a burn speed and/or subpar media

I have one those same drives. LG makes Excellent DVD Drives. However, even though it's a 16X drive, it may only write at 16X with LG recommended media. I can tell you this, Memorex Media is NOT good media! Try Verbatim. I don't know WHY you want to burn at 16X, but mine will with Verbatim 16X media. Bottom line, USE GOOD Media. Also, I highly recommend burning at 4X Max for best results. I'm sure a lot of other Members will agree on this. My LG 4163B is a Retail drive, and I wouldn't waste my money on Memorex Media. Mine LOVES Verbatim, Sony,(Made in Japan) Fuji (Made in Japan) Maxells (Japan or Taiwan). If your MID says CMC Mag, don't use it.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

I too have a panasonic E85H stand alone DVR and it will go in to a self check if it gets bad media. I don't know what it is about some disks, but put a bad blank one in and the self check/system recovery occurs. The bad thing about that is, my E85H has a built in TV Guide thing (kinda like a cheap TIVO) and this gets reset when the system recovers. Then the recorder wants 24 hours of off time to get program info, and it changes the channels on you if you try to watch TV. It's a pain in the a**. I used memorex on mine also (before i learned the error of my ways) and was able to get what i thought was good burns. Most of those memorex code out as CMC-Mag (probably the winner of the worst DVD media award). Now I only use Sony -R on the panasonic machine and it loves it. No resets, and good burns that last. These panasonics seem to be very media sensitive. I would suggest you find some good quality media that it likes and stick with it. Bad media can make it look like you have a hardware problem but simple troubleshooting like swapping media will show you where the problem really is (media). The machine will work fine using good media but will go in to a system recovery after just trying to read a crappy media disk. What I discoverd was: use crappy media get some coasters or system reset. Use good media and everything works fine.
Also you may think those were successfull burns but go back and try to back up them on good media using a pc, and see how many errors you get. Stand alones seem to be able to read error filled movies without too much of a problem, but the problems really start to show up when you stick them in a pc. Use a program like DVD Shrink and put one of your "successfull burns" in the pc drive. Try to back it up. During the analysis or encoding phase you will probably see an error code: DVD Shrink has encountered a problem and will terminate. Problem CRC error. I like the panasonic but I am aware of it's limitations (media). I use mine to record from cable TV to disk. Even just using a stand alone burner puts you in the burner family, and none of us are immune to bad media. A good TY or Verbatim innoculation is what you need.
Good luck and happy burning.. :)

i ran across a few of these too. a friend had them so i grabbed a couple to try out. i had the option to burn at 6x,8x,12x,16x i have a sony and a nec burner and both were the same. so i burned at 6x (the slowest). they both played fine, however i wouldnt spend my money on these(theyr crap).but if u cant get ur money back i would stick with the slow speed and pray.
