DVD-RB takes about 290 minutes on average for me to run, whereas Shrink takes less than half that time.

I try to only use RB if I need a lot compression so the quality stays good... and it does, as I have never noticed any pixellation even burning at 75%, whereas when I used Shrink to burn a movie at 74% there was tonnes of it.

What compression do you guys start noticing a drop in quality using Shrink? I am looking for TOP quality picture, not "decent" or "passable".

I personally won't go below 90-92% with Shrink...

I usually do not go beyond 80% with Shrink, but use deep analysis and smooth/max smooth below 90%. However, I have not noticed any pixelation at 70% with Shrink using AEC, if you are getting that maybe you should check your media brand and burner firmware.

For 'top quality' on a back up suggest doing movie only and/or 'splitting' the movie into two DVD5 discs. This will reduce the overall time to back up and give best quality possible with DVD Shrink.

I believe that would defeat the entire purpose of me posting on this forum, seeing as it is a DVD backup/burning forum.

But thanks for your delightful and informative response, and should I need any guidance in the area DVD purchasing in the near future I will be sure to consult you for your expert advice.

to arniebear and kringles...

thats what i dont get, I tried burning the pianist at 72.6% with deep analysis in shrink, and it was just pixellation galore, but i hear other have great success with it around the 70% mark.... i do have th latest firmware installed etc... so who knows.... i am pretty picky though, i LOOK for these thigns, whhere as some may not, and i envy them being able to just enjoy the results....LOL

Ive done full disc backups at around 50/60% before and have not noticed any degrade in quality.
