Power calibration error
When the burner try to read the disk for the info and calibrate the burn it can not do this . Try another disk
Also try and not book-type a (-)DVD as it can not be done. You can only booktype a (+) DVD

fema69 ,
1.You are using Nero API version: 6.3.1.19 Using interface version: 6.3.1.4
It is up to 6.6.0.16. If you updated it did not work or install
2.Yes I saw that you were using good blank media but you might have had a bad disk. I then checked your burner's firmware to see if it was up to date and it was. Along w/ the Power Cal. error it has to be a bad disk or you might have gotten a bad batch.
Just make sure that you do not check change book type to DVD-Rom when you use (-) DVD's. Only do that when you use (+) DVD's
Try using + blank media ( Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden ) and then change the book type ( bitset) of the blank media. In (-)DVD you can not change the inner ring info as it is set by the manuf. but w/ (+) DVD's you can put the info on the inner ring and this tricks the DVD Player into thinking it is a DVD-Rom disk and thusly makes it more compatible and plays in more standalone players

it must be a bad batch because i bought them at Best Buy on sale, I mean really on sale--like $4.99 per 50pak. I thought it must of been a mistake on their part but they checked it and they told me it was a back to school special. Now i know it was a back to screwl pete sale. :)
Now if i am changing the book type I am doing it without my knowledge because I dont know how? How do I change this?

Hi Pete,
You may have the "Book type DVD-ROM" box checked in Shrink.
When you press the "Backup!" button, the Backup DVD menu opens. Go to the burn settings tab and uncheck the box.
This is also where you set the burn speed. Slowing the burn speed down may allow you to use those discs. Make sure you have a blank disc spun up in the burner before setting the burn speed.
As CarMike mentioned, getting your Nero updated will help, heres a link to Nero's update page:
http://nero.com/us/nero-up.php
You need package 1 and package 2 mainly.

It is still showing the blank media is the problem. The media you purchased might only be good for Spreadsheets but it is not liked in that burner. See is you can find Sony DVD's and try them. Buy a small amount and if they work then you can start using that brand. Most of the time the better media is Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, and Maxell. The reason I suggested Sony disks is that you have a Sony burner and the burner should recog that brand. Try that and let us know if it works

I thought Verbatim was a good media? I think Sony is Monopolizing this end of the Market like Microsoft has for many years by forcing the public to use Explorere. Do you think this may be the case here?
If that doesn't work do you think I should change burning software?

fema69 ,
It might be that Verbatim did not send a blank dvd for Sony to look at and write a firmware update for. There are Sony DVD's that you can buy locally or at least in my area there are. If you put a Sony disk in and it does not work I would say it might be the burner. Have you tried to used a DVD cleaning disk to clean the lense of the laser? If the laser can not properly see the ID code on the blank media it can not calibrate the disk. Lets try the cleaning disk first and then try Sony Media second

A power calibration error is an error that occurs when the DVD fails to return a correct response to the burner.
Think of it like this:
I have a pile of apples. I toss you an apple, you cut it in half and toss me back the halves. For every apple I toss, I should get two halves back. If I start getting the wrong number of halves back, then I know there is something wrong.
During the lead-in the first 15 step OPC is completed. By doing this, correct laser power levels are established.
This is done by burning a series of "pits" in the Power Calibration Area (PCA) on the inner portion of the disc at different power levels and then reading them back. This is why a burner can adjust to various types of media. If no speed is selected then the maximum speed allowed by the results of the OPC is used to begin the burn.
OPC gives burners the ability to use blank media that have not been specifically tested in the burner. It is better to use name brand media that has been tested though. The tested media is part of an established list maintained in the burners firmware that will help the burner set the correct parameters for the burn. Whew.
During the course of the burn, "Running Optimum Power Control checks are performed constantly. This allows dust and fingerprints to be burned through in many cases.
So as the burn proceeds, laser power is adjusted up or down as needed. At some point though when it cannot be adjusted enough, the running OPC will set a flag and the burn process will stop.
By setting your burn speed slower, more time is given for this process to occur. More laser power is required at faster burn speeds.
Try a slower burn speed. Cleaning your laser may help as Car.Mike said. I would even try to blow out the burner with a bit of canned air.

Fun reading from Pioneer Technical Services:
Quote: The DVD specification, however, adopts the concept that all information about the data content is contained within a file system, and exists within the data itself. Therefore, the information written in the lead-in (middle region) is information necessary only for the drive itself, such as disc compatibility and drive control information. (There are also regions for manufacturer information or related to copying.)
This information is called control data, and is written in the 17.5 to 105 tracks located inside the data region start radius of 24 mm. One block of the control data is an ECC block (16 sectors), and is written across 192 blocks, or in other words, is repeated 192 times. The first sector of the control data contains physical format information. The physical format information describes what type of disc it is, conforming to what revision of the specification. It also describes the disc size, the maximum transfer rate with consideration for portable players, number of layers, track path type, whether the disc is all ROM or partial ROM, recording linear density, track density, and start and end sector numbers.
Starting 16 tracks inside of the control tracks and covering two blocks of length is recorded a reference code used for equalizer calibration. Inside of this, ROM discs also contain a region of all-zero data extending inward to a radius of 22.6 mm.

I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?
Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.
Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.
If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (almost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.
Please try the following solutions:
1. Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
2. Try another brand of media.
3. Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
4. Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
5. Send the recorder in for service.

I see, it still has to do with the media though. For some reason the drive doesn't like the media, MCC 02 - RG20 is a good media code. Changing the media would be the first step that I would take next.

@fema69 - as i've advised you in reply to one of your PM's, i'm having to request your other duplicate threads be closed. i am having a problem locating the correct thread to continue helping you and the PC i'm using does not have sufficient resource to open all your numerous duplicate Nero logs to figure out where we got to with your problem.
