So your BenQ internal burner was only $35? Have you ever had any issues with it? I am looking for a DVD burner, Sony and Liteon are nice, but $35 is pretty cheap. If it works well I'd have to consider it.

yes no probs. sony are more expensive lite on rebadges. get liteon if ya want one. either liteon 1693s or benq 1640. but imo benq is better. however both can burn yuden -r and +r media with great results. benq 1640/1620 can do cheaper media better than liteon.i got all 3. they're great. 1693s makes a very good reader/ripper

I doubt it has anything to do with the burner. 95% of my backups work perfectly. My copy of Ultimate Spiderman skips a little, but it's not too bad. I might try rebuilding it and seeing if it works better. Spiderman 2 had problems too. Something about that studio's games... I don't know.

Who rebuilt the game and can play it without the sound or video skipping and stuttering?

Yes that's what the first part of the thread was about. Try burning slighly faster or slower on good media.

I actually rented the game and I have the 3.86 gb file. I tried used mode iso read it copied at 4x then burned at 4x and swap magic said it wasnt a valid ps2 disc. Then tried 2x and got the choppy sounds and crap, then 1x and freezes still. I've burned over 40 games before and they still work fine including.
Haunting Ground, Madden 2006, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Resident Evil Dead Aim, Devil May Cry 3, Silent Hill 2 and 3, Super Monkey Ball deluxe and many more. Maybe I just need to use a lense cleaner on my dvd drive because I havent been able to back up movies for shit lately either had problems with land of the dead and constatine. so who knows. Probably just wait for the damn Spiderman game to become a greatest hit.

If you're talking about your PS2, don't use the lens cleaner, the disc with the rug deal attached. That will scratch your lens. Take it apart and clean the lens with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Spiderman being a rental might be the issue. Frequently rental games are scratched horribly and in bad shape. You could always find a torrent for it or something.

Rented games aren't scratched up when they were just released. Anyways, I can't really control my burn speed. I guess it has to do with my burner. I think 2.4x is the speed it always burns at. I haven't got around to rebuilding it yet, because that is a little time consuming. I might just deal with it. It's just the audio that skips and freezes. The video and gameplay are fine. I wonder what it is that that company does that makes their games so sensitive.

Yeah you may wanna rebuild. For some FMV heavy games, you may wanna burn at 4x, and rarely at 8x. What media are you using?
Rebuilding an ISO
If you have ISO Buster and Nero: by MinnWild at modchipzone :
Step 1.
Decrypt the ps2 game to your hard drive using dvd decryptor.

Step 2.
Open up Isobuster and load in the image file.

Step 3.
Hold shift and highlight all the game files and put them in a folder.

Step 4.
Open up Nero burning rom and create a new UDF/ISO dvd (It's the last one in the list). Drop all the game files into Nero in the same order as it is listed in Isobuster. Just keep Isobuster open as a reference when you do this. Nero will change the order of the files graphically, however they burn in the order that you dropped them in.

Step 5.
Name the image and burn it at 4x.

Step 6.
Presto, you've rebuilt and burned a PS2 game. Play it.

Note:
Some games have dummy files in them.(ie. guilty gear, spider-man 2). They are used to beef up the size of the image and to copy-protect the game. Burning games with the dummy files left unchanged will result in a game that does not boot (using swap magic anyway). To remedy this annoyance follow these fun steps. Make sure you create an ISO for the game on your hard drive before you start using DVD Decrypter or other burning program. Also create a empty folder on your hard drive for the new files. Also keep ISO Buster open the whole time as you will need it for the last steps.

Step 1.
Open up ISO Buster and select-> File, Open Image, and then browse for the ISO you have created on your hard drive. Next click on the first file in the list on the right side of the screen, then hold down shift and click on the last file so that all of the files are highlighted. Continue to hold shift and right click on the highlighted area and select the Extract Objects option and then choose the folder on your hard drive to save it to.

Step 2.
Create a new text file. Open it and press the space bar once, then choose save as. Browse for the files you just extracted and click on one of the garbage files so it takes the same name. Then when it asks if you want to overwrite the existing file say YES. Repeat this for each Garbage or Dummy file.

4. Now that you have replaced them all you can use either Nero or CDVDGEN or another program (ISO Buster may have this option) to take those files and create a new ISO to burn. You must drop and drag the files into the program in the same order that they are in ISO Buster (this is why you kept it open)

5.Open up Nero burning rom and create a new UDF/ISO dvd (It's the last one in the list). Drop all the game files into Nero in the same order as it is listed in Isobuster. Nero will change the order of the files graphically, however they burn in the order that you dropped them in.
6. Now just burn the new ISO.

I said before that all I did was "rip and burn" the game. But, I'm noticing a lot of other technques. Dummy files?? Why mess with them. I have yet had to create or recreate a dummy file to get any game to work with my SM 3.6 and Flip Lid setup.
It's bad to assume things, we all know that. But, it appears the common problem on this board is "choppy playback" whether it be the sound, graphics, or both. I would like to "guess" that everyone isn't using the fastest machine out there (computer wise). So, I'd like to offer this as a possible fix. When doing the actual image ripping and burning, make sure you don't have anything running in the background. Such things like Outlook Express auto checking e-mail every so many minutes, instant messaging in progress, anti-virus enabled, pop-up blockers enabled, or even that dreaded Norton System Works being active, can cause system resources to "drag" or be drained at random points in time, thus, possibly causing bad data burns.
I've been slapped in the face on this board for mentioning that. Some come back saying "it's multi-tasking, Windows that is - so why does it matter?" Well, have you ever driven your car at night, turned on the AC, and noticed the headlights dim briefly? The same applies to computers, new or old. The best of the best computers will have a system resource spike to where 100% of the resources momentarily are used up by a program, then evened back out to other opened software. Those spikes, if occurring during a dvd burning process, can cause a bad burn. Thus, you will end up with choppy playback or non-bootable games.
Have you ever downloaded a MP3, listened to it, and heard "burps" or the words being slurred or heard random skips? It's because the ripper of that song who shared it for download was ripping the original music cd while having other programs running at the same time. Thus, we end up with bad MP3's out there.
So, with all of that in mind, I do believe I know what I'm talking about here. Try doing a fresh reboot before ripping and burning an image file of a game. You can right click Norton Anti-virus and disable it before performing your rip and burns. Don't surf the internet while ripping and burning. Don't chat with your favorite messenger program. Don't print out documents or photos while ripping and burning. And if you have that gosh awful Norton System Works, uninstall that program. Why? It's constantly using system resources so that it can keep up with the data it's supposed to collect, such as free drive space, available system resources, etc etc. Do you get my point now? If you are getting choppy playbacks, and you fall into the category I've listed above, then give my suggestion a try.

End Game,

Gamer2000, aka Digital9x

P.S. If you happen to be one of those that can burn, chat, surf, and whatever at the same time, don't bother mentioning that. Not everyone is fortunate enough to purchase today's high-end computers. So, let's look at the overall picture, and not try be a bad-*ss about who can do what. The goal of this forum to help each other out.

Yeah Norton products are AWFUL, no argument there. Their Virus Scan is a joke and System works, yuck. Use System Mechanic 5 for a good all in one maintainence utility that works well. As far as having stuff running, it depends what kind of system you have. I have gig of superfast (lol) DDRPC2700 memory so for me it doesn't really matter how much stuff I have open. In general you're right though. If you have less than 512 MB's of RAM with XP, forget it. As far as dummy files, they do matter. If you make a straight burn of a game with dummy files, it won't boot. You need to overwrite them just by opening a new text document, hitting the space bar once, and then "saving as" the dummy file and clicking yes to overwrite. If socom freezes or is choppy, try burning slightly faster or slower.

I still have to refute the "dummy file" creation event. I have over 45 PS2 games in my archive that are "copies." As to date, I have yet to create or recreate any dummy file. All games load with no problem, fluent playbacks, fluent game play. Perhaps I'm a lucky one, but I make copies of my games for friends to whom I've installed the new flip top lid for as well. Their games that I have made for them load with no issues, and I've yet to make or recreate a dummy file. The newest SM is the media disc used to boot all games.
Perhaps the dummy file rebuild is needed if you have a modchip installed? I never created such files for my PS1, which has a modchip installed. Since I'm batting a great average, I won't concentrate on dummy file creations/manipulations until I see a game that will not load via my either doing a rip and burn or a rip, rebuild and burn.

I was a Socom beta tester for the newest released version. Just for the heck of it, I made a copy of it, and didn't create or recreate any dummy files. The Beta version I received from Sony, which I duplicated, the copy played with no problem. I've also duplicated the retail version of the game that is out now, without creating any dummy files, and I always burn at 4X. The game plays flawlessly.

This is straight from Steimy, an AD addict who taught me a lot of what I know. I can't say that you're wrong, just goes against what I've been taught. I tend to believe he's right, but I don't have a DVD burner, so I don't know for sure.

Personally I dont think rebuilding is necessary. The only time it is is to fit a DVD9 on a DVD5. I have made over 100 copies now and I was having similar skipping and freezing problems untill I switched to Tayio Yuden DVDs. Now all my straight burns work perfect with no lag or freeze.

Version 1 PS2
Fliptop lid
Swap Magic 3.6
NEC 3250A 16x DL burner
Tayio Yuden 8x Media

Eat one live toad first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you for the rest of the day!

Okay,

For the heck of it, I'm going to do this "data re-write" of the garbage/dummy files for Mortal Kombat Deception. Curious to see what the result of this will be.

Don't replace the dummy files. Tokijin is wrong about that. If you replace the dummy file with a blank one for spiderman 2 or ultimate spiderman, then your game will be even more choppy than it was before. Not all games use the dummy file for copy-protection. Actually, most don't. The dummy file is used to space out data to allow it to be read more smoothly. Also, gamer2000 is right about having other things running being a bad idea. However, that's not my problem. I never have other programs running, because it's just common sense not to do anything else on the computer while burning any kind of disc. Spiderman 2 and Ultimate Spiderman are extra-sensitive and choppy. It's not because I have other programs running. All other games play perfectly. Hundreds of people have complained about Spiderman 2 and Ultimate Spiderman backups skipping and stuttering and playing choppy. It has something to do with how the company put the data on their discs. I'm going to try re-burning Ultimate Spiderman, and if its still choppy, I'm going to try rebuilding it, but deleting the dummy file will only cause more problems. Don't bother with that. The only time I've deleted a dummy file and had success was with metal gear solid 3, and that's because the TOC was too high to load with swap magic otherwise... rebuilding MGS3 probably would have been better, but that was before I knew about rebuilding games. I have probably atleast 5 other games with dummy files (most games don't have them) that I didn't replace and they play fine. Usually I only rebuild games when I have to to get them to load with swap magic (like mercenaries & nba street v3), but it might help fix the choppiness in ultimate spiderman... who knows.

Hey Josh,

I appreciate you backing me up on that (common sense to have nothing else running while ripping/burning data). All this mention of "dummy/garbage" files, according to others, seemed to be a big deal. I, myself, I have never messed with them. I did post that I would perform that step with Mortal Kombat Deception, but just found there are no dummy/garbage files to be manipulated. Then, I came back here, and read your post. So, I'm glad the game didn't have any of those files, since it appears it would have been a waste of my time.

Both Spiderman 2 and Ultimate Spiderman just happen to load smoothly for me. Though, I have games that exhibit brief split seconds of choppiness in the loading movie, but that's not enough for me to complain about since the gameplay is fluent and smooth. If I wanted a movie to watch, I'd put in a DVD with one on it. It's all about gameplay to me, and I would think, it is to everyone else as well.

Sometimes it's best to just sit back and take the bad with the good. Possible choppy intros verses superb gameplay of burned games, well, the gameplay performance out-weighs game movie intros to me. Everything can't be perfect. Heck, if you are like me, you put your napkin on your lap when you eat. But, there are those times you get a drop of food on your shirt.

Yeah, I'm looking to burn it again now though, becuase I played the game lastnight and the gameplay was pretty bad. It's freezing up in-game pretty badly now too. :/ My Spiderman 2 copy works pretty well, but not this one. I'd try to help with MK Deceptions but I've never backed it up so I don't know what's wrong with it.
