I have a desktop computer with a dirt-slow 2x speed DVD+R burner. This computer is, however, my only internet access. I am considering buying a second computer (probably a laptop) with a 16x speed +/- burner. That computer will most likely not be connected to the internet (mainly due to all the internet provider software/hardware on my older computer that I don't know how to interchange between the computers). I have several questions for the experienced folks in the forum in preparation of my new purchase.

1. Can DVD Shrink (and while we're on it, Decrypter) be transfered from one computer to another without downloading it again?

2. A few versions of DVD Shrink past, there wasn't a burn function in DVD Shrink. Subsequently, I bought a download of Nero to burn my shrunk DVDs. On the latest version of Shrink, it burns immediately following download (and I believe it uses Nero as a platform on the seamless transition burn). Is the burn function actually built in the latest Shrink, or is it merely drawing from my purchased version of Nero? In other words, do I also need to transfer over Nero to have the Shrink burn work?

3. Does a higher speed mean a quicker analyze and shrink speed, or just a quicker burn?

Thanks.

1) Yes: I have 2 pcs,my main pc is on the net and my old backup 598 mhz celeron with 256 mbs of rimm is not hooked up.

I transfer programs via portable usb cruiser-128 mbs. It's very handy, especially when I have dial-up so it takes me a lot longer to download to both computers.

2) DVD Shrink has not been updated for over a year now. It still has no burn engine, but it autoburns for me using my basic oem Nero on both pcs. You should be able to transfer Nero to your other machine, since no internet is hooked up. You could also download the 30 day trial of Nero. I downloaded that free trial on a friends pc and it still burned his dvd backups for over 9 months without buying or updating it again.I had to re-set his machine up after a virus messed it up and had to reformat-losing all his dvd programs.

When you transfer DVD Shrink over to another program, double check your backup target size and the Enable burn with Nero box in File/I/O tab.

3) Higher speed: If you mean by processor speed,it should be yes-along with more ram.
DVD Shrink will use 100% of your processor to analyze and encode. It only uses 1 or 2% of the processor to burn. Those smaller pcs, like my backup 598 mhz can really tell a speed difference. Not much slower on 0% compressed movies, but the more compression, the slower it gets. Add in the adaptive error comprensation enhancements and that little pc really suffers-12 hr backup times on them. That backup pc can still burn Yuden000-T02 media which is 8x rated,at 16x speed! I rarely go that high of burn speed, but my benqs have that capability on both pcs.

Pariah,
1. You need the install file . If you have the install file then you can copy the file to another computer. It would probably be just as quick to D/L the file to the computer that has internet and the copy the install file over.
2. Shrink sees if you have Nero on the computer and then tells Nero to burn the files it has copied automatically. I would also D/L Nero or take the install disk and input it in to the New computer. All you really need to copy is the Burning Rom.
3. Higher CPU speed usually means faster analysis but that also depends on are you using hyperthreading, Ram speed, etc. The higher the speed of the burner really means nothing as most people burn at 4X. My burner will do 16X but I have never tried it and probably never will. I usually burn at 4X and have done a few at 8X and one @ 12X and they all read properly w/ no CRC error codes. The 12X was using 8X Taiyo Yuden disk though

Thanks for the info. For some reason I was thinking the x speed of the DVD burner would also mean quicker analysis and shrink speed. Maybe my 2x burner isn't so bad. Currently it can process a 8 gig DVD (like tv series DVDs) in about 2 to 3 hours. 90 minute movies in about 40 minutes. I may get a second system anyway, as it would be nice to have a secondary if my burner dies on me. Out of curiosity, what is the expected lifespan of a DVD burner and is it measurable in number of burns?

Pariah ,
Some people get 300 and others get 1000 or more. I have done approx 268 movies w/ the Pioneer A08 and about 240 w/ a NEC and both are still going strong.
At 2X you should burn a movie in about 25 minutes and even if you use it at 4X that equates to 15 minutes. If you have the quality enhancements checked in Shrink then that will cause the transcoding to take longer. In some cases 3X longer than normal. That is why I only do the movie because if I want to see the other I can pull the original out

I've got probably over 1500+ burns on my original benq 1620 and it is still holding strong. Many of these are on the fly! I'm waiting for it to die so I can get the benq 1640, LOL

Some burners give you examples of like 100,000 hrs of burning, but that is a lot of burning. I'd expect about 2,000 burns out of mine.

I'm curious to see how many the big dawgs have gotten out of their burners.

saugmon ,
I have had to build 2 cabinets, one for the originals and one for the copies. The wife would kill me if I had to store 1500+ Originals and copies. My den would look like Blockbuster. LOL
