Hi all,

i have a sony DVDRW DRU-700A and have never had any problems burning DVDs, dual layer or otherwise. i used to rip the film with DVD Decrypter and burn with Nero 6.6.0.3. this has never caused problems and the media has played on all DVD players.

however, since i bought some RiDisc DVD+R DL, not one DVD has successfully burned. and to add to it, three of them now say they aren't blank. i've tried updating Nero to 6.6.0.16. still no joy. i've tried doing all the ripping and burning in DVD Decrypter. no joy. or DVD Shrink.

i'll post the log below and would be really grateful if someone could advise. its doing my nut in!!!!

Your drive isn't recognizing your media. Try updating the drives firmware by going to sony's site and getting the latest firmware.

:-)

Here is the link to your drive http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#700

If that doesn't work It could be you just need to use Vebatim media those Ritek DL disks aren't all that good anyway

yea i have updated the firmware.

so do you think its unlikely to be a problem with the DVD drive itself because some strange things have been happening to a couple of my games.

one time, the drive wouldn't read the medal of honor pacific assault disc, and when i removed it it had peculiar swirls on it. this also happened to my Farcry disc. this are now never recognised by my drive but are by other peoples. my drive thinks that they are blank!!

any ideas?

It could possibly be a drive problem? Have you tried cleaning it with a lens cleaner lately. Does it have problems with all types of DVD's or is it just these Ritek's?

Have you tried using Decrypter in iso read mode then opening the MDS file and using iso write mode, because I have found this to be the best method, and I have had no coasters. Also make sure you burn at 2.4x this seems to work out well.

benjazach,
Maybe I am reading this log incorrectly ( wished I had kept mine)and please bear w/ me . Below are parts of your log:

1. Last possible write address on media: 4173823 (927:30.73, 8151MB)
Last address to be written: 2285993 (507:59.68, 4464MB)
(This should be the first layer)

2.12:59:15 #21 Text 0 File DVDPlusDualLayer.cpp, Line 481
L0 Data Zone Capacity set to 1186080 (121920h, 2316MB) -> ERROR, capacity different:
L0 Data Zone Capacity on disc: 2086912 (1FD800h, 4076MB)
L0 Data Zone Capacity requested to be set: 1186080 (121920h, 2316MB)

It looks like somehow the 1st layer is supposed to be 4464 ( 1st) but it really is being written as 2316( 2nd )and you are getting an:
ERROR, capacity different:

just saw this thread as it's the same drive as mine but more importantly i wanna learn a bit about DL burning (have no interest in DL myself but just need to know the logs/what's different to SL burning with Nero. looks like i found the right thread, nice one guys..

well, the main difference between DL and SL is that if you are ripping a DVD you don't need to compress it at all. when you rip a bought DVD they generally come out as around 7.5Gb, and as you prob know SL DVDs are 4.7Gb, so compression is needed before you can burn the files. DVD Shrink is a fantastic program for that. you can download it here:

http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

the main benefit with sticking with SL is the price. they are very cheap now whereas DL are still around UK£2.50 each. (SL about UK£0.20).

any other qs don't hesitate to ask and hope can help you

benjazach,
Creaky was wanting to see some D/L Nero logs as they are not that prevalent on the forum. Most of the people here that use D/L blank media use DVDDecrypter as it finds the layer break better than Nero and does not have the problems Nero has

yeah, that's what i keep reading, that Nero can't do the layer break properly, where for Decrypter it's not an issue. i'm assuming that 'imgburn' will also do DL burning easily and properly as it's alledly from Lightning UK himself

Creaky ,
All of the old members are now back at his new forum site so it is LightningUK. If DVDD did d/l I'll bet Imgburn will also but have not had a chance to use it due to the cost of D/L Media. I'll just wait for Xmas when I'll probably get 5-10 more d/l disks from Santa.
