I have had minimal problems up until now with my two older computers but my new computer has a problem now is that when complete, dvd will not play in home dvd unit, but plays fine in computer dvd drive, what's up with that? I cannot figure it goes through anylize and encoding and burn with no problem.

I am 99.99% sure that it is not the DVD media. I have gone so far as to buy the same make and model DVD recorder as the one that I have in another computer that I have that works. In my case the problem appears to be the computer. The problem is only with my 2.4 G P4, I have two P3 computers, one of which has same DVD drive as the 2.4 G that does not work. I have lots more details for anyone that can help me.

Rich:[/bold/ If you have eliminated the Media as the problem, and you are SURE that the file you are asking the burner to transfer to disk is 100 percent compatible with the DVD-R Format, that only leaves a few other areas too look at.

1. The Other Programs that are currently installed on your New Machine that might be causing interference with a compatible burn process. The Nero Program " In CD" for example, can cause some serious conflicts with a DVD write. It is best to remove that program if you have it installed. There are a few others that will also cause "Write" conflicts. Look at your installed software (on the new machine) to see what it has installed that your old machine didn't.

2. The Program that you are using to DO the actual burn. Make sure that it's compatible with your new setup.

3. The Firmware version which is installed in the DVD Burner in the New Machine. Check for the latest updates and install them if required.

One thing that might be worth trying (up front) before you go all nuts with system checks. Take one of the DVD's that you copied in the past, one that is 100 percent clean of all protection and is in perfect format - then, copy that disk to your Hard Drive and try to re-burn it on your new setup. If the resulting disk will NOT play on a DVD Player, then start looking at your system setup and the other things listed above.

What are the actual brand name and model numbers of all 3 burners?

What firmware versions are they?

What is the brand name/format/and speedrate of your blank media?

Some brand names like I/O magic outsource their drives to different manufacturers. I've got 2 of the I/O magic 16x drives.1 is a benq 1620 and other is an empa drive.Purchased 3 months apart, from the same store!
There's a huge standalone compatability difference between both of them, even with the booktyping capability.

Overall,I have 5 pc burners and 1 stand alone tv burner and all their backups vary considerably on my standalones. I wanted another good burner like my original benq 1620 so I didn't have to mess around with different formats to play on certain stand alone players and pc drives. A second benq 1620 took care of that issue.

That second benq is in my backup p3 celeron,598 mhz and it is a great pc for backups.A little slower, but 100% burn success rate and those booktyped dvd-rom backups play virtually everywhere, just like my original I/O magic benq drive..

One thing I forgot to ask you to check. Look at your System Devices under "VSO Drives" and make darn sure that you have a "Patin Couffin Engine" installed. It is often overlooked when configuring new machines, but is a Must Have Driver for good DVD Burning.

Movies27:

I've got 2 pcs that work,1 that I have to fix here shortly, and access to my dad's pc-which was identical to my main pc in my specs.I also have 2 buddies who burn quite a bit.

When I encounter trouble,I've got 3 other pcs that can verify the trouble outside my home. My dad don't burn many dvds.I just take a spindle over there every now and then and fart around with it.He's got the NEC 1100A.

I've also got a couple of buddies who are set up and can test my backups on theirs and their backups on mine so I actually can fart around with 8 different DVD-RW and 2 dvd-rom drives and can see how they all vary at recognizing all the different backups.one has the Nec 1100a and other has NEC 2510.

My benq's don't recognize the nec 2510 dash backups, but my lite-on 167t will read just about anything.

I appreciate all of your help.

I am using a HP DVD420i recorder. I am using this because I already have one in another computer that works 100% of the time. Both computers use Win 2000 and Nero 6.3.0.2. There are some differences between the software applications, other then Nero etc., installed on each machine.

I have copied a DVD that was made on the problem machine on the machine that works. When a bad DVD is copied on the working machine, then the copy of the problem DVD works, ie the data is OK. I will try going the other way, ie get a working DVD and try and copy it on the problem machine.

I think I updated the working 420i with new firmware at some point, and I have not updated the new 420i firmware. I think that I will update the firmware next.

I checked all three of my computers (two 2000, and one 98 machines) for a Patin Coffin Engine. None of the machines have it. I am a little reluctant to install something that I do not no what it is. Plus my other working machines work without it. I searched for Patin Coffin Engine but I do not under stand it.

I looked for the Nero program 'In CD' I did not see it.

Please reply and tell me what you think.

Thanks to all of you for your time and patience,

Rich

@Rich2112 - re Patin Couffin Engine, you only need it if you're using VSO products, ie Blindwrite is an example. I'm not sure if you need it for ALL of VSO programs or just some of them, but if you have none of their programs then you don't need the Patin Couffin Engine at all.

Thanks Creaky for the explanation of what Patin Coffin Engine is.

I upgraded the CD writer firmware to the latest rev and it still did not work.

I am going to swap the non-working DVD writer with the identical working DVD writer in the working computer. The two drives should be identical in model and firmware now. I will bet the new non-working DVD writer works in the working computer. Any bets?

'fraid all i did was a quick google search as i've never needed that bit of software and due to having dealt with umpteen thousand failed logfiles here at AD i think i've only heard it mentioned once (in fact it wasn't a logfile it was one of squizzle's reply to someone who was using some VSO software).

i won't comment on your burner swap as mine let me down last night so it's going to shop for a swap today, the movie i was watching last night (had only burnt last night) skipped near the end and a CRC check confirmed there were errors at the end of disc; it has burned incessantly and flawlessly apart from the odd self-inflicted coaster so i'm confident it's the drive (could clean it but it's had a good innings and i'd never trust it again anyway)

It was the burner. I swapped the identical HP420i burner with identical firmware between computers and one backs up DVDs and one does not.

I think I am going to buy a benq1620. What do you think?

i'd go with Saugmon's comments further up re the Benq, there's rarely a day that he doesn't mention Benq (or Staples sales lol) :)

Check out this thread:

I don't see many posts about the 1640,being a newer drive than the 1620. A few bad drives get out of the manufacturer, but that is the case for just about any other brand name.
