Hello all,

I have had a Lite-on LDW-811S for about 1.5 years now. My DVD videos never used to play that great (lots of jerkiness in the film) so i did a bit of research and came to the conclusion that it was the media that was the problem...Many people had said that Taiyo-Yuden were the best brand of media so i bought a 100 pack of them (TYG02). The first movie i burned was a backup of a film and it played perfectly on a PS2, so i assumed the problems were sorted. But now they've started coming back. I'm using the same batch of media, and i'm wondering whether my DVD-Writer is coming to the end of it's lifespan perhaps? Could that be why my dvd movies seem to be getting increasingly worse? I always use Nero (latest version) which i've never had much trouble with. I burn all the DVDs at 2x, don't use any other applications in the background or anything so could it be the DVD Writer??

I'm thinking about getting another dvd writer anyway, so could i have reccomendations on what's the absolute best DVD Writer out at the moment, and what's the best DVD Writer that i can get for about £30-£50??

Thanks, Nick

I've heard that Plextor's are the best, but overpriced.

Here's a pretty good review of the BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer,

http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/226

And if you decide to purchase it, newegg.com has it for $42.99 (not Euros) shipped, I received mine yesterday, installed it, upgraded to latest firmware, installed software, backed up 3 DVD's, and it worked flawlessly.

Rich

when was the last time you updated the firmware on your burner, current for this model is DR8HSOR

http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_firmware_dvd%20...

As far as burners go Lite on is still a reliable brand as well as BenQ which is usually priced well.

Hi,

Yeah, my firmware's up-to-date already. I thought that Lite-On was a fairly reliable brand - the reason i bought one was because i remembered the reputation they used to have from when just cd writers were around. However, the only things i think it could be are old dvd writer or bad media...and i've burned about 20 TYG02's which haven't been that great, and for Taiyo Yuden i hear that's rare! So i really don't know what else it could be?

OK great, the Plextor is probably slightly too expensive for me but the BenQ looks like a good buy! If i had to choose between the latest Lite-On SHW-1635S or the Pioneer DVR 110D, which one would you guys choose? I'm very fond of Lite-On, but maybe it's time to move on to replace it with a Pioneer (forget BenQ in this instance)? Is the Pioneer as good at copying cds as the Lite-on (including copy protected cds?)?

Thanks, Nick

I hear lots of good things about the Pioneer, however if you plan on booktyping I am not sure if the Pioneer does this. So it may be something you want to check into.

Yes, i've just been looking into bookmarking?? I can't say i've ever changed the bookmark on anything before, but would i need to? What's it particularly useful for? All the DVD Players in my house play Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs, apart from the X-box (and not very well in some cases) - would bookmarking change how well they play? And it's only used for DVD+Rs, isn't it? I barely use +R's because i want as much compatibility as possible therefore stick to -R's.

Is it possible that i've installed something that has stopped the writer from making good quality burns? Like a driver conflict or something? I think recently i changed the IDE cable i was using because i upgraded my hard drive? Would this make a difference?

One of the reasons I bought the above Benq, was by default it is booktyped DVD-ROM, which all DVD players can play. From what I have seen some new DVD players TODAY are not able to play DVD-Rs.

I had that problem when I changed IDE cables for a new harddrive, but it only effected the HD's. I went and bought those new cables that are round (I don't remember the name of them), and that fixed my problems.

just found this re the Pioneer 110D -
Quote:
Current Model: DVR-110D
Book type setting: Yes

Widely regarded as the most powerful force in the DVD writing industry, Pioneer stand in a league of their own. Impeccable write quality and media matching capabilities have kept Pioneer consistently a market leader since the inception of desktop DVD recording. Once again, the DVR-110D seems to be eclipsing the previous model in the series, suggesting that the PUH/OPU and firmware development has come that little bit further again. There is much speculation concerning the 110D-->110 conversion. We will know soon if it is possible or not. DVD-RAM writing, for the 110D is a very large drawcard, let alone the ability to write a full DL disc within 15mins.

Pros:

? Fastest DL writing capabilities in existence. 8x to both -R and +R DL
? Highest write quality of any drive on the market
? Highest media compatibility of any drive on the market
? PCAV @ 16x to a wide range of media
? Stunning firmware support! A new firmware every month or two!
? Yes, I am working on the DVR-110D-->110 hack, to allow DVD-RAM writing

Cons:

? You need to switch kernels for bitsetting of DVD+R --> ROM

Current Firmware: 1.08

Yes, i'm from UK. I bought my discs from this page :

http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/dvd-rnoprint.html

and i bought the:

{DV 3138} Taiyo Yuden (8x) Unbranded DVD-R in Heavy Duty Spindle Tubs of 100

So as u can see, i'm slightly annoyed that i payed £40 for them, and it turns out that about 90 of them could be coasters!! Oh well! I'm fairly sure they're not fakes - the description says that they are purchased from an official Taiyo Yuden distributor??

I'm using Nero (latest version) for burning. Would this make a difference perhaps??

As creaky would say post your Nero log, it can be found in My Computer, Program Files, Ahead, Nero, Nero History. Post the log using the Pioneer, and edit out your serial number. Also use the Nero Info Tool and check the firmware on that Pioneer, it could be out of date.

hi, those are the very same TYG02 i bought. svp only sell genuine TY discs, and you should have mentioned Nero 89 coasters ago, Nero's logs are a specialty of mine...

time for my proverbial logfile request - post LAST section of logfile, in case you don't know where it is, it lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar (sorry, i copy/paste that toooo many times!)

all i can see wrong in the logfile is lack of free memory..

one way to rule out whether it's the player or the media is that if there's corruption in the burnt disc, you can verify by CRC checking it via dvdinfo (free trial download from www.dvdinfopro - make sure to pick the free one with adverts). if the CRC check comes back negative, the data on the disc should be fine, and it would be the standalone that's being fussy with the discs.

for me, the only times a disc has skipped has been due to corruption on the burnt disc, it's not been due to fussy standalone players.

ps also make sure you're not writing to the edge of discs, ie if you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences, thus avoiding outer edge of discs and not sacrificing much space

OK that makes sense...the problem happens on 2 dvd players - my Portable DVD Player (which i thought could play anything!!) and my standalone DVD player. Could it be that these DVD players need a lens clean, perhaps?

Before anyone answers the previous question, i should probably add that normal DVD movies (non DVD-Rs) play fine on both...

That'd be worth a try but I'd be more for a crc check of a disc that's known to skip..

Good call - just ran a CRC check on the 1.43 GB compilation that i just burned. Turns out there were 106 bad sectors, which means that 8.3592% were bad. I suppose that's not really that great, is it? What are CRC errors, and what can i do about them? Is it the media's fault, or the DVD writer's?

I would definately try some good DVD+R media booktyped dvd-rom. Here's a link to the lite-on booktype utility and there is also a link to a usage guide on that page. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 You could also try reseting the eeprom on your litey since if you were useing substandard media before you switched to good quality media. There's a link to the lite-on eeprom utility on that page also.

If you want to booktype your DVD+R media to dvd-rom with the pioneer drive you will have to flash it with modified firmware called buffalo f/w. It will void the warranty on the drive. You will not have to do anything to your litey. It is already bitset/booktype ready.

I hear you. If i flash the buffalo firmware then i need to use the warranty, can't i just flash back to the official firmware? That way, can they know that i voided my warranty?

Still unsure about these CRC errors though? What are they and why are they on the burnt media?

Try booktyping dvd+r media to dvd-rom with the litey (already bitsetting ready) or the eeprom reset. If you were interested in booktyping dvd+r media to dvd-rom (most compatable format btw) I would have recommended buying a lite-on or benq as opposed to a pioneer.

Ok that's fine then...bt still unsure about these CRC errors though? What are they and why are they on the burnt media? Are they what's making my movies choppy? If so, what can i do about it? Is it just a fault batch of DVD-r's?

CRC errors is corruption. the official meaning is 'Cyclic redundancy checking', you can get 'CRC' errors on floppy discs, hard discs, cd/dvd's etc.

The main reasons for skipping/freezing on discs is too high a burn speed/and or poor quality media. And burning too close to edge of discs.. Some standalone players can be fussy with discs, hence booktyping +R discs to dvd-rom to fool players into thinking they're playing a normal pressed disc, ie an original movie you buy from the shop (they're 'pressed' not burnt). Anyway in my experience the only time a disc skips/freezes is when it hasn't burnt correctly, so for me, a CRC check is the proof.

Pixelation can be caused by compressing the video too much, causing picture breakup (pixelation), so it's important to know the difference between the 2 things.

Anyway, recently (last week) i had a few movies skip/freeze, a CRC check proved corruption, for me it was better to buy a new burner as everything else i knew to be correct, ir media used, burn speed, no multitasking during the burn, sufficient free memory, hard disc defragged frequently etc etc etc, and i wouldn't trust my burner even if i'd cleaned the lens or whatever, so i was confident that a new burner would solve my problem.

...However in your case i'm not sure what to suggest next, you've bought a new burner, you've got authentic TY.. gonna have to ponder this one....

I'm certainly not an expert, but have burned a lot of dvds with very few coasters. One time I did have crc errors, I also had over 250 spyware garbage on my computer. Getting rid of that solved my problem.
