Glad I found this forum because,as you know, there is no where else to get help on this kind of stuff.
I've been using DVD Shrink on and off for a few months now with no problems. I also recently installed DVD decrypter so I could back up the new Robots movie. Ever since trying to back up this movie, encoding on shrink is not working. The most time it ever took to encode a movie is about 45min., now, even a movie thats small enough to need no compresssion is comming up 145 hours!! Yea it drops to 45hours after an hour or so but thats a little crazy. Needless to say I haven't backed up any movies lately. I uninstalled and reinstalled Shrink but this did not help. Any suggestions out there? I'm pretty new at this DVD stuff so go easy on me!.

sacredsun,
Welcome to the forum. You might have the record on encoding hours. LOL
Go to Device Manager and see if there are any yellow flags.
While there look in the IDE/ATA ATAPI Controllers - click it and make sure the Secondary IDE Channel is in DMA mode. If the secondary IDE Channels are in PIO then uninstall them.(right click). Then re-boot computer and go back to the Sec. IDE Channel and make sure it is in DMA instead of PIO. Windows should install it properly after re-boot
If that does not cure it then Windows is putting the computer into PIO Mode ( or in your case- I do not think there is a word for it) for every 5-6 conflicts and downgrades fron DMA-2 to DMA-1 to PIO-4 all the way back to Pio-1. When it get to PIO Now your CPU is doing all of the work. Registry conflicts can also cause this so Google for a free Registry Cleaner and clean out the registry of any conflicts. Also Defrag the HD

Thanks car.mike,
I checked the device manager like you said but everything is in DMA mode as far as I can tell. I cleaned and defraged my registry and scanned for spyware etc, before I wrote the original question. And shrink was working fine all along anyway, so I don't get it. If I can't get this straightened out can you recommend other programs that will do the same?
Thanks again.

sacredsun,
Do this first and humor me before you try the steps below: D/L DVDFAB Decrypter( located at the top under software- rippers and rip the movie to HD and then use Shrink) or use AnyDVD( 21 day free trial version) along w/ Shrink to do that movie.
Also we are going to need you computer's spec's.
Computer Name/Model, How much Ram, OS, etc. The more info we have the better.
Is this a laptop or a Tower unit. If a tower take the side off after you turn the computer off and unplug the power from the computer. Make sure you have no static by touching the case to discharge the static and now check to make sure all of the cables are seated properly to the HD, Burner, and Mobo. Also take the Ram out and re-seat the ram and make sure it is seated. Look at the cables and see it there are any kinks in the cables . If all looks good and you think it is seated properly , now with the side off carefully plug in the Power Cord in the back and turn the computer back on and see if all of the fans operate properly.
If after you have done all of the above you still get 100+ hrs to teanscode a DVD it needs to go to the PC Doc so he can find out what is going on.

Thanks again for taking the time to Help.
The primary Ide channel is Ultra DMA-5, the secondy is Ultra DMA-2
It's a tower unit, Os is XP pro- 1gig of ram, Pentium 4 CPU 2.4 Gz Not a name brand was built and upgraded several times. Nothing has changed since Shrink was working correctly. And the rest of my programs have no problems.
As far as that other stuff," D/L DVDFAB Decrypter( located at the top under software- rippers and rip the movie to HD and then use Shrink)", sorry you lost me. Remember,I'm not that computer savy! I will try Any DVD and see if that works. Off to play.........

Car.Mike,
The latest:
Took your advice and tried DVD fab decrypter. When it first came up it said my DMA was not activated so I activated it and decrypted a small(no compression needed) movie. Used Shrink to enecode and it came up with 152 hours!

sacredsun,
Below is the registry cleaner I use. It has a trial version where you can only clean 2 items at a time from each category. But you can keep cleaning the registry until it is finished. When it asks you do you want to back up the registry click on the yes and back it up. Lets verify that the registry is not having conflicts w/ the OS.
You said you defragged the registry but I think you meant to say you defragged the HD. Use the cleaner and report back. If that does not cure your problem then it might have to go to the PC Doctor to have them see if one of the cables are bad or a part is bad or shorted because you are going into PIO to much and that is what that is causing the problem

Car.Mike,
Actually I have two registry cleaner programs, Registry Mechanic and System Mechanic Pro which not only cleans, fixes and optimizes the registry but also compacts and defragments it. I use these at least once a week so I'm on top of this.
Sounds like I may have to seek out a PC "doctor" like you suggest. I don't want to take up anymore of your time with this problem. I can't thank you enough for all your time and patience in helping me with this. I am greatful for your selfless dedication to strangers like myself.
Peace,
Alan
