As subject says, I have a Sony VGC-RB30 model PC, and recently purchased a pack of your basic Sony brand DVD+R's.

DVD Shrink'd a movie into an .iso file, tried putting that .iso onto a DVD+R with RecordNow. It says it was burned sucessfully, only it wasn't. I tried it in my DVD player, my ps2, my computer, nothing works. I try again this time burning the .iso using DVD Decrypter, it finishes but then I get an error as the disc is finalizing. What the hell?

I know it's not my burner, because I tried burning the same .iso with an old Memorex DVD+R I had laying around, it worked no problem. Can anyone explain what could be wrong? Some sort of weird unexaplainable glitch in my computer? Defective DVD+R's? There's no way in hell a Sony product shouldn't work with another Sony product and I'm quite frustrated to say the least.

I don't burn DVD's regularly so I'm not exactly sure what you mean by these two things. What are Taiyo Yudens nad how can I make sure my firmware is up to date?

Sony media?

The real question is which sony plus media: 1x-4x/4x/1x-8x speeds?

Many different manufacturers on some of the sony plus format media like: Yuden000-T02 and SonyD11 on the +1x-8x and Ricohjpn-r01 on the slower and older 1x-4x and 4x.Probably many different manufacturers other than ricoh on those 1x-4x and 4x speed rated discs.

Use this free handy tool to ID those discs and let us know what their MID code is:
http://video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_identifier.cfmhttp://www.afte...

That dvdidentifier will tell you: Your actual burner model#/the firmware version/and the MID code of your blank discs. Post back the info you get from it.

Like aabbccdd posted, sony is usually very good media, and majority of problems are fixed by updating the burner's firmware to the latest version.

@saugmon

You are correct on the 8x Sony DVD+R showing SonyD11 as the media code. Believe it or not, my best Quality scores, (all 99 out of 100,) in the order shown come from the following after burning:

GSC003 Legacy DVD-R 8X
SONY08D1 Sony DVD-R 8X Taiwan
YUDEN000 T02 Taiyo Yuden DVD+R 8X Japan
TYG02 Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8X Japan
SONYD11 Sony DVD+R 8X Taiwan (sometimes the Quality score with this media drops to 97 and is my last choice to use.)

This link shows a post I did showing a quick scan of the same burn using three of the media above.

save it to your desktop if you like, doesn't matter as long as you know where it is. 'Flash' the firmware, ie install it in Windows using "LtnFW" - read up on it/download it here - http://dhc014.rpc1.org/howto.htm#LtnFW

Alright, I've downloaded it and it seems simple enough, but can you just tell me exactly what to do as I'm a bit scared with the warnings from the first page you linked me to that this could mess up my drive indefinitely.

So I hit browse, locate the .bin file I just downloaded, and then what?

using the ltnfw utility use these 2 options -

1. Backup: This option is LtnFW's most important feature. Use this option to backup the firmware from the currently selected drive.

2. Update: Select this option when you have a binary firmware file that you want to flash onto the currently selected drive.

basically you mustn't reset your pc during the update, or switch it off. Also cross your fingers that you don't have a power cut :)

I did the backup which didn't take more than a minute, and I'm now updating. The current status is "Programming... Please wait" and it's on 100% but it's been like this for 20-25 min. Is this normal? How long should this take?

I'm really worried right now, it's been about an hour and it still says "Programming.. Please wait" yet it's on 100%. Could it be frozen or something? I don't know what to do.

Okay the "Please wait.." never left but I let it run for hours so I guess that was the end of the line. Is there anyway I can check to see if it was successful before I attempt burning another DVD? Anything else I can do?

@jerkstore,

Make sure there is NO dvd or cd inside your burner when you update your dvd's firmware.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

Ugh. Forgive my never-ending ignorance, but where exactly do I find the version number of my drive? I rightclicked it in My Computer, but don't see anywhere that would be whatever version my firmware is, old or new.

I'm on XP (aren't we all).

To check your burner's firmware on XP:

- Righ click on My Computer on Desktop
- Properties, Hardware, Device Manager
- Left click on the + sign of DVD/CD-ROM drives
- Righ click on your dvd burner, click Properties, then Details
- now it should show your dvd burner and its firmware followed by your burner

Here is an example of my SONY DRU 710A BYX4: So, BYX4 is my current firmware

IDE\CDROMSONY_DVD_RW_DRU-710A__________BYX4__\5&38663351&0&0.0.0

It's much easier with DVD Decrypter and Nero Info Tool because all you need to do is open up the program and it will automatically retrieve your burner's firmware.

Well I took the easy route and just checked it through DVD Decrypter. Doesn't look good. Says the same exact thing as when I opened up DVD Identifier before I attepemted to update the firmware.

Oh what fun.
