@scubapete,

Sorry I was during PCI checks.

Interestingly enough this morning I called lacie to inquire about the lightscribe/ labelflash which was pointed out. Strangely about 15 minutes of looking for a 2 digit number on the burner comes to find out that was not supposed to be shipped, boxed, etc. They have asked me to send the burner back for the correct replacement which does not do color. Even offered to provide this area with direct product support until we leave.Hmmm their story doesn't match but as a consumer I don't think this is right as if I purchased the wrong item I would have to jump through circles to exchange or get a refund.

Question...after reading maxburn's post I decided to run my media thru dvdinfopro to see the manufacturer coding and noticed it came up blank. Any ideas as why if they are sold that they are not listed?

to burn or not to burn that is the question

Maxburn,

I have applied all the info you suggested but still am not getting the host to merge - I did the clean tools and everything (actually I did the whole process twice) Looks like I may just have to contact Nero support. Oh and I noticed that my original disk (before my online updates) did have a number under the 6....8 - I think mine was like 6....5 - THAT could be causing the problem of why it wont recognize the lightscribe burner. But still w/ updates I would think it could do it - but then to again, you know computers and software can be - tempermental.

-------------------

I keep seeing people mention they have HP 640i burners - while mine in a 640b - I wonder if my problem is lying here with something with my burner! I have run it through DVD Decryptor to see if there are any firmware updates and its not showing any for it ...

-----------

Carp, the info that Gen Chaos has (I went and checked out the thread by looking up his name) - is the exact same info the Maxburn has provided us in this thread - but still wanted to say thanks anyway

We will keep this thread alive. (looks like it's gonna take effort though) Thanks everyone for doing their part, but really, there's some very good and informative stuff in here, if we can just keep it real.. i will look at, and read a post by ANYONE if i can get something good out of it. I already been there done that on verbal attacks/etc, and thats not what i want AD to be. I am not trying to tell anyone what to do,, i have issues with authority also,, just suggesting. As always anyone can take or leave my ideas, and it wont bother me. The only exception to that would be if i suggested a specific fix for someones error, and they refuse to impliment said fix, but still complain about having problems. Then i may get more persuasive in my argument :) Changing from crap media to good media is just one example where ppl seem to go insane over brand loyalty just because "it is cheap, and has always worked for me before" .. Oops started foaming at the mouth about crap media..

Now back to the real world of LightScribe and general disc printing..
@Zhelpz
Sorry to hear none of that worked. I thought we might be close, but no cookie. I noticed my Nero startsmart has 2 sn for neroexpress. Here is what the LS print looks like when i select a non-LS print capable drive.

When i select the LG drive, it gives the LS Print as shown in prior post. I know this is just reaching, and you have been here for a while, but have you checked to see if your firmware is up2date for the HP? It is not an off brand, so Nero should see it as a LS capable drive, and "un-hide" the LS printing in Nero. Did you e-mail Nero tech support with your problem? Sounds like something they could easily fix either by having you dl something, or telling you how to unlock that feature.
@ScubaPete
Yes, different background colors will be a great improvement, though the gold ones are not bad,, and i noticed the article said improved image contrast, so that will be a very good thing too. Improvements are usually a good thing, if they actually improve somthing. You have my respect, but ya cant have my cash..:) (not that i have much cash anyways)

You could try using DVDIdentifier. It might be more up-to-date in it's database. That's all I can think of ~

DVDIdentifier:
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

As to the burner ~ It certainly seems strange, it wasn't supposed to be shipped. What's that about ? I?m at a loss.

@Andmerr,

Little peas just doesn't get it . . . . .

@Ireland,

Heh, Heh, what would we ever do without your input ?

Once again, an excellent article to be tossed into the soup. Thanks !

I especially like the part about the different discs that aren't interchangeable. Could it be we're sea'n the beginning of a VHS / BetaMax head butting contest again ? If so, IMO, LightScribe has the definite advantage, sea'n how they're out with 3 major Mfgrs of LightScribe burners PLUS several Mfgrs of quality discs. It seems that the only thing that LabelFlash could come up with that could level the playing field would be a significantly lower DVD disc cost. Only time will tell there.

Maxburn,

First let me say - I am starting to think its a issue with my HP writer and its software.

I am thinking this because,

1) the fix you gave me was SO EASY - there is really NO reason why it should not have worked (under all correct conditions).

2)Why is it that I cannot find ANY INFO on my drive which is SUPPOSED to be a HP 640b. Now I have found info on the 640c, the 640i, and a whole host of other HP writers, but none on the 640b. Now isnt that kind of strange. this includes looking on the actual HP site. ----> So this leads me to answer your latest question ... have I updated the firmware. Well, I have been looking for ANY firmware update for the 640b for months now (well before the current issue has come about). I'm getting zilch! I think i am going to have to call HP at this point. I will try to get some tech support through HP and Nero and see which one can help me the quickest - I have had to call HP before - its not pretty *L* (Im getting a headache just thinking about having to contact them)

3) No matter what I do, the computer just does not seem to recognize the fact that I have a LIGHTSCRIBE burner - other than that one particular program I mentioned before - Intervideo WinDVD Creator - I am going to have to waste a disk just to make sure it will actually do anything at this point.

4) I went into my application recovery - guess what I saw - Lighscribe HOST application installation recovery - can you guess what happened after I (re)/installed that - *L* Zilch !

5)To further my point about the 640b GHOST / ALIEN / non existent drive - I was doing some bitsetting/booktyping on my drives - can you guess what happened when I tried to bookset the suppossed 640b drive? I got an error message telling me it (bare with me) "you need to re-install the software ... something or other ... as if the drive did not even exist!) Its too bad I cannot recall the actual message - the installation came str8 from the HP site to bitset HP BURNERS.

6) I am trying not to let this frustrate me - BUT - My computer is possessed!

@zhelpz
It's not the computer that is posessed, it's the drive. I have this LG lightscribe drive, and it is not listed for a firmware update either. Mine is 4166B and i can find models above and below it, but not it. Even creaky couldn't find it when he checked. The auto-firmware update feature included w/drive, doesn't work either. Fortunatly mine is working with all good media (i don't put crap media in it).
I found the disc that had the LS software on part of it. Here is what it showed on the disc. (couldn't get the whole disc image to fit, so here is the LS part only)

I went thru the program looking to see if there is just a lightscribe part that i could get to you, but the LS part i found, would not execute on its own, it needed to be installed with the package. I am running out of ideas. Did you contact Nero for lightscribe support?

Maxburn,

(Glad that you are sticking with me)

I probably wont contact Nero until next week. The good thing is - the drive itself does work and I have had plenty of successful burns with it - even with crappy media BEFORE I KNEW ABOUT CRAPPY MEDIA of course *L* (hanging head down very low - I used to use Memorex all the time before I found this site!) Now I only use Fuji, Ridata, Sony (well I havent bought any Sony's since the whole cd rootkit protection scam) but I still have an unfinished reel. The funny thing is - after I stopped using memosux, I found that the burning problems I USED to have - are far and few between! (sorry got off the subject a little bit...)

Anyway, I didnt know my lightscribe was missing anything until you posted that pic - then I got all excited and here we are *L*

So you also have a possessed drive. I dont get it - but like you said, once I contact nero - I bet they have something that will be an easy fix. they will probably take me through some baby steps on the comp to do this and that and then my lightscribe will be hosting via nero like yours.

Im running out of ideas too, but from the research I have done - it really seems like the Nero support will probably help the most because it seems to be the only thing I have found that is a general hosting software - that really should work with any lightscribe burner. In the meantime bewteen now and next week - I am going to go into that Intervideo program and do some testing. I figure, let me see ALL the stuff that is wrong with my drive so I will only have to contact HP one time if nero cant fix the hosting issue!! I really have to be in the right frame of mind to "deal with them"!

I've been using Lightscribe now for several months to make promotional CD's for my home remodeling and carpentry business. I burn these disks that contain thousands of pics of all the homes I've done and hang them on a peg for people to take. It's much better than a business card. People can pop that disc in their computer and see everything I've ever done. At 50 cents a blank CD, it's the best marketing tool out there.

Hey guys,

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.

My BenQ doesn't go around saying, "I'm a LightScribe drive." I haven't done anything with my drive except, going to Nero's SmartStart and select "Print LightScribe Label". I setup my label on the template. select my BenQ 1625 as the burner and Click on the "Print" icon.

So, what's the problem ?

Scuba,

My nero was all messed up - The LS feature was not in there Period.

----------------------------------------------------------

Editing message ---Update for Maxburn!

No longer a problem.

MAXBURN - I had to do some more tweaking to my system. I did a restore and another re-install of recovery apps and now it is showing up! I kept thinking something has to be corrupted ... IT WAS CORRUPTED.Thanks so much again for your help in this - Of course, my drive is still possessed, but that no longer matters *L* computers are still temperamental!

--------

Gwen, That looks great!! All the people using the printable disks rave about how fast it is - that is certainly something to consider.

Of course we can always "have our cake and eat it too" by having both a lightscribe burner, and an inkjet printer. I really think it is going to be a while before we see a LS disc be able to beat gwendolin's disc print there. Of course that costs a little bit more, and sort of defeats the whole purpose of the laser replacing ink, but, the price of inkjet disc printers is coming down.
@zhelpz
Glad you got it fixed. Thanks ScubaPete with that Print LightScribe pic posted, i finally found it on Nero,,, DuuHHhh. Geees, that's where it hides, in the Extras. I never looked in the extra's part, always used the drive bundled Nero express like i posted. See zhelpz, if i would have done some more research on Nero itself, Lightscribe printing was there the whole time. Well, i never claimed to be Einstein. Live and learn..

Maxburn,

Mine was not in my nero startsmart either. All the info you and I went over, plus what Scuba said, was not there. Something was wrong with my files. I would have to be blind not to see these things IF I had them there *L*

It was my whole Nero program - LS Hosting was not the only thing missing. I had some other applications in Nero that were not working also. I never thought about it because I just thought i had to pay extra for them. Come to find out, I was working with a half-baked nero. My files had been corrupted. The System restore fixed ALL of those issues.

NOW, everything is working, everything is showing up where it is supposed to be. And the host in showing its head under Express, and in the advanced mode under extras.

Thanks for you additional info too

Maxburn,

You never claimed to be Einstein, but you did claim you were a higher being from another planet *LOL*

Besides, if it had not been a corrupt file situation, your advice WOULD have worked flawlessly, no doubt in my mind about that.

Speaking of livin' and learnin' I am just glad I waited to call Nero and HP! I was not ready to give up yet - I knew it had to be something that we could fix w/o their help. Whew! HP probably would have had me ship my whole computer back *LMAO*

-------

I am really thinking about getting a printable anyway - all the ppl with the printables seem to be rally happy with them. And it seems like they ar getting there disks finished faster. I am going to wait for about 6 more months or so - and maybe go ahead and purchase one. You know when you wait a while, prices drop like flies!
