I've scoured existing threads to no avail. A) The fliptop I ordered seems slightly mis-molded, in that its screw-hole column for the refresh-button harness is 1/16th" higher than the column in the original PS2 lid (where the column was flush-even with the surrounding support wall). After forcing the new combo together, the harness looks fit snug, however it must be skewed somehow by the 1/16th" discrepancy, b/c when I close the fliptop over any inserted disc, the PS2 immediately shuts off, even when I'm gentle. Reassembled it over and over for same result. This is frustrating, as my PS2 v7 is in mint condition, and the techs at the fliptop store say they've never heard of this lid problem. B) While waiting for the above issues to be resolved, I was able to confirm that my backup discs work, by running the PS2 lidless. However, now I've tried again a week later and suddenly the Swap Magic 3.6 discs (DVD and CD) have stopped working - they freeze on the initial Swap Magic title-logo screen and no longer go to the subsequent (load menu) screen. Yet other DVDs (PS2 and movies) are loading and playing just fine. What the heck? Any notions about any of these problems? I swear Gremlins have taken over everything

Don't know about Gremlins. Hate to ask but did you order the correct flip top model? They make em for v.1-3, 4-7, 8-11, and 12 and 13 (slim). I have a v.4 PS2 with a flip top, so theoretically it's the same lid you have. I didn't notice any height issue's with the eject harness fitting into the flip top grooves. Did you install it correctly? Proper installation can be found here: http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/fliptop/page1.cfm The PS2 immediately shutting off can be a sign of overheating: Q) My PS2 shuts down during game play, what's wrong with it?
A) For the most part this happens when your PS2 overheats. Either your fan is not working, the vents are clogged or dirty, or you just need more cooling. So besides checking to see if it's working or cleaning the vents, I suggest getting an external USB fan that sends air into the case while the back fan pull it out, greatly increasing the air flow. they are usually about $8-10. That and there was some ghetto mod that allowed you to play backups with no lid: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/230803

I have a V7 myself with a flip top lid.
And if they mad it correctly it should fit right
the only problem i had with mine is that i can not
put the screws back in the bottom of the PS2. If i do it is
too tight and will not play anything. So i just left them out
when i put on the lid the second time and it has been going
strong for over a year now.
I even tried putting the screws in but leaving them loose and
that didn't work nearly as well as when i just left them out
i do not see what would cause it to shut off on you
you didn't damage the silver ribbon or pinch it when installing
the case right? that would cause problems. That or if the buttons do not fit the whole right and are being pushed down slightly by the
flip top case.

Thanks Tokijin and steimy for your replies.
Yes, the lid ordered was a v4-7 to match my v7. Overheating is not a factor as the PS2 runs fine w/ the original lid even now; clean open environment and not clogged. I was careful not to pinch the silver ribbon, though the spinning discs do make noise whirring against the ribbon under the fliptop, since the old drive cover no longer shields the ribbon. I tried your suggestion about leaving the new lid unscrewed, and the PS2 no longer shuts itself down. BUT:did you read the second part of my original post?
Swap Magic 3.6 discs (DVD and CD) are not working. They freeze on the initial Swap Magic title-logo screen and won't go to the subsequent (load menu) screen; the SM discs simply stop spinning. Yet other DVDs (PS2 and movies) load and play just fine, both in fliptop mode and lidless. (SM worked the first day it arrived as long as the PS2 was lidless, but now SM won't load period -- so the backups that worked fine the first day, are now as useful as coasters) I keep disassembling and reassembling the console in various configurations trying to get everything to work, in this case SM to load, and preferably with the fliptop.
Right now you two have been helpful and I'm grateful, but I feel the whole hardware universe is locking me out of modding by some bad karma, or else I was sold a lemon lid w/ lemon SM discs that had only a 2-hour lifespan. I don't want to send everything back to the store for a refund, but right now none of these products is working the way they seem to for others. I'm open for suggestions, as the forums are populated with happy users who've found better luck.

Yeah you may just need to clean the lens. Open er up and clean it with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. I use the opposite end of the Q-tip to dry the lens. If that doesn't work then try exchanging your swap magic discs. Are you using SMD correctly? It'll be useless with the original lid anyway. Here is the correct usage: http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/swapmagic/page1.cfm
