Thanks Tokijin and steimy for your replies.
Yes, the lid ordered was a v4-7 to match my v7. Overheating is not a factor as the PS2 runs fine w/ the original lid even now; clean open environment and not clogged. I was careful not to pinch the silver ribbon, though the spinning discs do make noise whirring against the ribbon under the fliptop, since the old drive cover no longer shields the ribbon. I tried your suggestion about leaving the new lid unscrewed, and the PS2 no longer shuts itself down. BUT:did you read the second part of my original post?
Swap Magic 3.6 discs (DVD and CD) are not working. They freeze on the initial Swap Magic title-logo screen and won't go to the subsequent (load menu) screen; the SM discs simply stop spinning. Yet other DVDs (PS2 and movies) load and play just fine, both in fliptop mode and lidless. (SM worked the first day it arrived as long as the PS2 was lidless, but now SM won't load period -- so the backups that worked fine the first day, are now as useful as coasters) I keep disassembling and reassembling the console in various configurations trying to get everything to work, in this case SM to load, and preferably with the fliptop.
Right now you two have been helpful and I'm grateful, but I feel the whole hardware universe is locking me out of modding by some bad karma, or else I was sold a lemon lid w/ lemon SM discs that had only a 2-hour lifespan. I don't want to send everything back to the store for a refund, but right now none of these products is working the way they seem to for others. I'm open for suggestions, as the forums are populated with happy users who've found better luck.
