Greetings from Greece.
I have a P4 in the 2,6 with 1 GB memory and generally good configuration.
I use to make back up films (yes bought, and only for reasons of backup safety :) ) with dvd shrink.
With this program I was very satisfied especially from opinion of time transcoding (5-15 minutes).
For some strange reason shrink lately give me problems around the 2/3 of the encoding process to almost every movie(most of them without encryption).

The problem, by my opinion, is that for some strange reason when it reaches 60-70% of the process the 'buffered :' (in the encoding window) suddenly falls to 0 MB/sec and the dvd rom seem to stop - but the encoding process continue.

After that the dvd is written normally with nero but when i try to see it when it reach the problematic point (at 60-70% of the movie ) it freezes in my dvd player(and at pc also).

I tryed everything (new installation of Windows-etc) but it happens again and again.
I use very good media for recording (Tayo Yuden) and when I use decrypter the whole movie is ripped to my disk without problem.

So the problem is with Shrink.
If someone knows about the 'Buffered ' and what it is please respond.
I look at a lot of stuff about shrink, but I didnt find info about that.
Thanks in advance to everyone that reads that and every answer will be useful.

hiya, i'd subscribed to this one yesterday but didn't get around to answeing yet. it sounds like your DMA settings dropping to PIO - try this fix - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

Hi, and welcome to AD. :)
If it isn't the DMA settings as creaky posted, then you may be getting CRC errors;

In the example you gave, you were not reading from the HD but from a disc. I noted the part where you said the drive seemed to stop. Usually shrink will stop and report a CRC error to you. I had a disc, a copy of a movie, and it was on bad media. There were 3 CRC errors that i got Decrypter to ignore. The rest of the movie extracted fine, shrink openend and encoded fine, but playback has a pixillation at that part, yet the player gets past it quickly. You can try cleaning the original discs as this will give you CRC errors also. Sometimes you get a bad pressing of the original disc, and it gives you errors when trying to back it up. The only cure for those bad pressings is to get a refund or replacement. Usually when shrink slows down to 0% encode, it has encountered a CRC error and will stop reading the data and try to re-read the bad sector. In Decrypter you can set it to ignore CRC read errors, and i set my retrys to 2 like i do when i know i am going to run in to CRC errors. The back-up using this method, may play or not, depending on how many errors you hit.
<slight rant mode> We get to these posts as quickly as our free time allows (this is a forum, not an irc chat channel), so please be patient with us. We are here to help if we can. You gave a good, detailed example of your problem, and you are using good media, so please don't take offense at this response, but your reply to your own post was really more of a taunt/insult. Didn't bother me, and i understand your motivation, but you will get more help by asking, not provoking. That second post makes some people leary of helping you, as we have baiters and provokers out there who really just want to argue. Not you pan68. I am sure you have seen some of those threads, and it just takes away from the whole purpose of solving problems and sharing knowledge. I will get off my soap box now.

Thanks guys for the response! DVD Decrypter and Clone DVD ripped this particular movie fine so I realy dont understand whats going on..
It seem s like DVD Shrink suddenly want to sabotage my effort for movie collection.. :))
I put Slysoft's Clone DVD (last edition with any dvd) . It seems faster than shrink and even copy 'xXx the next level'. Both shrink(3.2) and decrypter(3.5.4) failed.
But when I was almost happy that I have found the successor of shrink then the dvd rom drive had some problems(it doesnot open).
(Maybe because clone dvd and any dvd put something in registry that affects the function of dvd rom). Anyway thank you very much for your attention. Any other comment would be appreciated (sorry if I kill the English language) :)
