Hello all, I am just posting this to see your various shrink times.
I am running a 2.93 ghz with 256 k RAM.I upgraded from a 933mhz/384 k RAM.
My times for encoding a 3-4 hr movie with 55-65 % compression have gone from almost 2 hours to 30-45mins.I am not complaining as it blows my old times away.
I was just curious as to the times some of you are getting to see if I can tweak my setup or if it is right on par.The only thing I am definitely changing is that I am going to upgrade to about a gig of RAM.Also the deep analysis takes roughly half the encode time so after ripping I am looking at roughly just over an hour analysis/shrink time. Also is 100% cpu usage normal on a 2.93ghz?I expected it on my 933mhz but I am just wondering if this is something to be concerned about. My cpu does not get over 44 deg celsius during encoding though.
Thank you for your time. One more thing, the guides on this site are awesome.I have definitely learned a lot by browsing through here.

dood1 ,
Welcome to the forum.
You might try cutting off all of the other processes you do not need. Turn off internet, No multi-tasking,
Go into msconfig and see whay other processes are running and turn off those processes unless needed. Turn of Antivirus.
Your times for transcoding the DVD Movie are about right as 30-45 minutes are not out of line and yes 1 gig of ram would help. Shrink will normally use almost 100% of the CPU. If you are concerned about heat w/ a tower add another fan, if laptop add a cool-pad.
Good Luck

You will notice an increase in transcode times with an upgrade to 512mg with Shrink, but the time difference from that to 1g is not that noticeable. If you are saying this is your time for a 3 to 4hr movie then that is about normal. Also, CPU usage is always at 100% with Shrink I just upgraded from a P4 2.4 to a P4 3.4 and it still uses 100%.

Just prior to the unfortunate burn up of my MB, I used AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 to backup The Hunted and Pirates of the Carribean. Decode times were about 17 minutes and burn time was right at 15 minutes. I guess that 30 to 40 minutes would be normal.
I am having another gig of ram added and two case fans to hopefully ease the system. I should get it back this week! :-)

I would say that is very unfortunate, hope you get it back and it works out well for you :)

Try to get your compression as high as you can. 50-65% is kinda low. Cut out all the subtitles and audio you don't need and go low on the compression of you menus and special features. The encode times won't really get much faster but the end product will be of higher quality.

I'm getting kinda confused. Do you want high compression? It would seem to me that you would want as little compression as possible, or to if at all possible, no compression on a back up. I tend to think that a movie compressed at 25% would be better than a movie compressed at 95%.
Am I think backwards? Please clarify for me.
thanks.

Yes you are thinking backwards...LOL. You want your compression to be 65-100%. If I get my compression to 70% I will usually run it through shrink twice to smooth out any roughness.

If you are reading compression 55 to 65% the it means you have compression of 45 to 35%, which is a lot. For that amount you better be using deep analysis and Smooth to Max Smooth quality enhancements. If I have that amount of compression then I use DVDRebuilder. Most of the time I do movie only to get the compression as low as possible.

Also...please correct me if I'm wrong, but you aren't compressing at 25% you are compressing to 25% so the compression is greater than compressing to 70%.

LOCOENG ,
I think your statement is correct if I read it correctly but in Shrink if it shows 65% you are compressing the movie 35%
