...why does the original scan of shrink (when you click open disk) go so fast but the encoding take so long?! Then if I add the quality settings on top of that (deep analysis, high quality compression) it takes even longer. It typically takes 2 hours to 2 and 1/2 hours when I select the quality settings. Ugh! I'm not complaining per say b/c the quality I'm getting is outstanding, I'm just curious as to what it's doing that makes it take so long that it's not doing during the quick scan when the disk is "opened."
Thanks!

Because in the quick scan it checks only to see what or if any data is there and if it can be used. In the encode phase it is copying the data from the move to your hardrive in which take longer. Ex. it take longer to copy a book word for than it does to read it (RIGHT).
Hope this sheds dome light for you.

It does make sense. Thanks for explaining the process. At least know I'll know what it's doing.

The first scan is called "quick analysis" the second long scan is called "deep analysis"

I found that mine was running a tad slow as well, but when I shut down a slew of other items that were eating up computer resources it really sped up the process. I got it down to about 45 minutes to decrypt and shrink.

The actual burn is running about 13 minutes at 4x.

That's about right...just under an hour from start to finish.

Your process times will vary, depending on the amount of compression. The more compression, the longer it takes.Throw in the adaptive error compensation quality enhancement setting of max smoothness or max sharpness, then the process time will really slow down. Your processor speed and ram also contribute to the speed.Slower processors=slower backup speeds.

Just keep an eye on the compression setting in DVD Shrink.100% is my goal, meaning no compression-faster backup process. When DVD Shrink tells your 50-60%,then expect some major compression.Using the quality enhancements will definitely slow you down.

If you want to speed up the process:
Close out all programs that you don't need/shut them down.No multi- tasking.

Backup main movie only, edit out extra sound streams/directors commentary/sub picture, beginning and ending credits. You'll be reducing compression,so those extra quality enhancements usually don't have to be used.

Slap in some more memory if you have the room for it.

Ok. So, here's a new question...
Once the quick scan is done, does that mean that it's copied to the hardrive so I can remove the DVD b/c it would no longer need it?

Nevermind...I know realize that WAS a dumb question! Of course it has to stay in the drive until it's done analyzing and encoding.

The "Quick Analysis" just analyzes the video to see how much compression is going to be needed and where its going to apply it. The "Quick Analysis" files are stored in a hidden folder and can be deleted if you wish DVD Shrink to do another "Quick Analysis" of the DVD.

Here are some relevant links that explains it in further detail:

(The second link is more pertinent to what you asked)
