I've gotten lots of help here so I'll ask for more. My CPU usage skyrockets to 100% a a ripping or burning process takes place. Otherwise it remains relatively stable. The burning always stops and says "unsucessful burning dvd:16." I've been burning with Shrink and Nero for years. Hundreds of backups. Now no program works. I am begginning to think my HP 300i is the problem. Any thoughts before I go buy a new burner?

Can you copy and paste your Nero burn log? It can be better decifered than just one line.

For dvd shrink: The analyzing and encoding should run your processor near max speed, but the burn should only be under 5%.

Try posting a Nero log and edit out serial # at the top of log.

What's the brand name/format/and speed rate of your blank discs?
How fast you trying to burn?
How far into the burn until that burn fails?

Heres the log, I'm using Ridata and Verbatim. They've always worked.

It is not recog. the blank media you are using. I know you stated you used Verbs and Ritek but it does not like the + media you are using.

You might D/L DVDinfoPro and do media test to see who the real manuf. of those disks are.
Are those 8X DVD's. If they are that might be why they are not being recog. The burner manuf. needs to write firmware for it

im not an expert on Nero.i have used Nero before and have a little know how on the program, but something caught my attention while going over your log:
Quote:
Physical memory : 735MB (753184kB)
Free physical memory: 228MB (234448kB)
Memory in use : 68 %
i dont know if neros need this much memory to run but it doesnt seem right.all other programs should be closed down while you are burning including sceensavers.so i would imagine there shouldnt be that much memory usage at that point since Nero hadnt begun burning at that point.

The memory usage looked high to me also. Something is using 500mb of ram. Possibly ad ware, spyware or virus somewhere on the system. Check you task manager for usage and see what is burning up you resources.

Click on the task bar on the computer and turn off un-needed tasks that will help.

Get dvdInfoPro to analyze your media. Post back.

@mossfan84
im getting confused on memory usage and cpu usage, sorry.the memory usage is more than likely from your operating system.but still is a little high,as my pc is only using about 320mb as yours is using over 500mb.it may be due to difference in pc's or os's or an actual problem somewhere(im using xp sp 2 on 2.8ghz vaio).but cpu(processor)usage shouldnt go upto 100% nor should it stay there unless you have like a 400mhz or lower processor(mine averages 5% cpu usage during burn).you said youve been backing up for years so it sounds like something went wrong all of a sudden.is there anything out of the norm that has happened recently that might have triggered this?any new programs, hardware, any incidents.also scan pc for viruses and spyware.

and before you go get a new burner, definitely update or reinstall your firmware.no sense not trying to fix your burner before you give up on it.but make sure there is no problems with your pc first.even if you do get a new burner and there is a problem that caused the first burner to go down it might take the new one out as well.and try to give more of an insight to possible causes.

@ozzymary

i would AVOID those staples brand and teon brand dvds at all costs...

pick up some GENUINE Taiyo Yuden or Verbatims for your dvd media...

locally, many stores have them on sale all the time...even staples, during their Fuji 30 pack colored sales, LOOK FOR MADE IN JAPAN on the wrapper, on the 8x dvd-r/dvd+R MADE IN JAPAN, they are BOTH Taiyo Yuden manufactured~ :)

many staples no longer carry any Verbatim, this is true in MY neck of the woods, but, bestbuy has sales on Verbatim sometimes, pricing for dvd media should be kept @ $20/50 or $40/100 pack, anything MORE is not worth it~ good luck~

docTY~

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Blank Media might not be your only problem. Before you jump up and buy new media that is far superior post your log here first and let us see.

P.S.Agree w/ kivory666 it probably is the media but it is better to be safe than sorry

That is why we wanted the log to see if your burner can bitset. If it can then get the +. If your burner can burn both types then it depends on how much you want to spend.
Also most of the people here would recommend that you burn at 4X

Error that need to be corrected:
1. Nero API version: 6.3.1.25
Using interface version: 6.3.1.4

You need to update Nero

It does not like the DVD you put in. We need the name and model # of the burner as it did not show up in the log. You might D/L DVDinfoPro (free) and see if it can figure out who made the drive

Try setting the burn speed to 4X

If you can get the burner's model # and name and there might be a firmware update that would enable you to use the Fuji's
