I've backed up most of my DVD's with no issue.

Three days ago, I was using NERO to make two (2) copies of a normal Data DVD (non-movie). I had told NERO to make two (2) copies. The first burned fine and NERO asked for the 2nd blank. I inserted the blank and Nero quit stating failed to write "lead in track".

Since that time, I've been unable to burn any DVD! Here's the weird part. I can't even burn in *nix! (that stumps me)

System : Win XP / SuSE (*nix) dual boot)
DVD Drive: LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1673S

I've replaced the ribbon cable, the DVD drive (Yup, got a new one).
I've tried a different power cable on my pwr supply.

DVD shrink reads the DVD's fine and asks for a blank (all normal).

It always fails to burn though.

Here's the error log;

I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).

This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (almost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

1. Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.

2. Try another brand of media.

3. Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.

4. Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.

5. Send the recorder in for service.

@m15a4 -

in addition to temj's reply...
Quote:

- EDIT OUT your serial number
Quote:
Nero API version: 6.3.1.26
- too old (not saying it's causing your problem but you should really update to 6.6.0.16, the latest 6.x update)
Quote:
Recorder: <LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1673S>Version: JS05
- your firmware is a few versions behind, update to JS0C - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2026

Last address to be written: 2286111 (508:01.36, 4465MB)
- 4465MB is too close to outer edge of discs;

set target size in DVD Shrink to 4300MB, thus avoiding outer edge of discs and not sacrificing much space

Insert empty disc to write to.

I can vouch for temj,
I was using TDK media with no problems. Recently started using Memorex and all of a sudden burn errors started occuring, either 75% into the burn or no burn at all.
Bought TDK again and voila! Success! I'm staying away from Memorex!
