Has anyone had troulble burning dual layer disc on dvd shrink? The disc seems to play fine till it hits the second layer or so I assume. I have tried to back up The Interpreter and Paycheck but both disc play fine until the 13th or 14th chapter and then they start to freeze up. When I backup on a single layer DVD+r things are fine. I have a very fast machine with 2 gigs of ram, 3.6 gz Pentium 4.
Any help would be appreciated.
Have a great day Leo
Most of us only use DVD Decrypter when it comes to backing up dual layer discs.
If you are using Nero to burn along with dvd shrink: Nero6 has trouble with the layer break, but usually errors out when trouble arrises.
An easier way is using DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO. It's free and very simple:
Open up dvd decrypter/click mode/and click on Mode ISO read. This places the files into a folder on your harddrive.Remember where those files go to.Then click the large disc/hardrive icon and those files will rip.
After the ripping, click Mode-ISO write.Click the folder icon and locate your movie files. You then want to select the MDS file/open/and ok. Then click that disc/harddrive icon to burn.
When it freezes up on the 13th and 14th chapter, how are you viewing them. Stand alone player or pc?
If the freezing is on your stand alone, play that backup on your pc using the same DVD-RW drive that burned it and watch for the freezing during 13 or 14th chapter. Also try those backups in other stand alones to see how they react.Your pc should play that dl backup and it should also look near original.
I had this problem on my first dl backup. After using windvd6 on my pc and the benq 1620 to play it,it was perfect. I tried a lens cleaner on that stand alone, but didn't help much.A new cheapie player took care of that issue. That's a last resort though.
Thank you so much for the help. I am using Memorex DVD+R DL Media 2.4 speed. I took the backup to work and it played fine although it was having trouble with the different menus at the begining setup, chapters etc.... At home I was viewing on a 2-3 year old Sony DVD player. I think it was pretty inexpensive when I bought it. I will try DVD Decryptor for my next backup. Thank again for the help.
Have a great day

People are used to using shrink for their single layer backups and since it has an option for DL backups people want to try it out. The thing is like saugmon had mentioned, the layer break is a bitch if you don't put it on the right spot. Keeping the layer break in the same position as the original DVD will only work if you make an exact backup of the original disc otherwise you have to find a new spot for it(exactly in the middle of the data). Some movies have an extra folder with cover art and others have a program that pops up when you put the DVD in your PC.(like the ones on Sony and Disney DVDs) DVD Shrink and Nero ignore this extra content when backing up a DVD and by doing so will change the optimum position of the layer break. Rather than trying to figure out the best position for the layer break, try using DVD Decrypter and follow saugmon's instuctions. It will make an exact copy of the DVD you are trying to backup.(minus the copy protections) You might also want to consider updating your fimware if needed.
Memorex DL media: Usually they are either ritek or phillips.
Phillips would be the crappier of the two.
I use verbatim data life plus dl media and it is very good.
Another program I have used on dual layer backups is dvdfab decrypter express. This is an excellent/simple program.
Hi Guys
I have DVDFab Decrypter and was experimenting with it. After you have the movie ripped to you hard drive I wanted to use DVD Decrypter to burn it to a DL Disc but the software keeps saying it cannot find the MDS File. I pretty new to this ripping thing and was wondering if their is a hidden extension or something I should be looking for. I know I can rip the movie with DVD Decrypter I am just experimenting with DVD fab because supposedly it can decrypt the more current copy protects.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am about to install a New Sony DVD DL drive. I am seeing people recommend only using decrypter for backing up DL DVDs. I am going to try it and I will let you know. I bought Verbatim discs to use.
