About 6 months ago I purchased my first DVD Burner at the local Wal-Mart and just bought some Sony DVD+R's. I tried and tried to get a good burn and gave up. Just two days ago I was sent a link to your site. I was able to get one DVD to burn but it will only play in my PC and my stand alone player is supposed to be able to support DVD+R so I was wondering if these discs are junk or something.

They read Sony DVD+R Ver 1.2/1X-8X. They are 120min/4.7GB.

I have the same burner and a couple hundred of these discs that are MADE IN JAPAN. Are your's the Japan or Taiwan ones? Also is your firmware up to date (listed in my sig.)? Some standalones are picky with media(one of mine hates Verbatims!)Some suggestions:

Burn @ 4x speed.
Try a few other standalones(friends/family).
Make sure you have the Made In Japan SONY's.
Do not multitask while burning.
Do a spyware/virus check on your computer.
Set your Booktype to DVD-ROM. (Burner is a rebadged Lite-On)

Also...what was wrong with your "bad burns" i.e Pixallation/skipping/freezes/doesn't play at all....
Your system specs?

No, they are made in Taiwan. They wouldn't play at all in anything other than my PC.

THis may sound like a stupid question but:

Are you using a decription tool before burning the dvd's?
If not, try DVD Decrypter, if you need to know how to do this let us know...

Just going straight to using Shrink followed by Nero software that came with my burner to burn the disc.

O.K. Try this:

For a DVD5 all you will need is DVD Decrypter. Open program, Select Mode>ISO>Read; in the first dropdown select the drive that the DVD is in, in the second point it to a spot on your HD (I have a folder set up called Video TS but I think that anywhere will do as long as you can find the file latter). Hit the button at the bottom, sit back and wait.
When done, Select Mode>ISO>Write; in the first dropdown select the ISO (or MDS decrypter will tell you if you get the wrong one, just let it decide) created above. In the second dropdown select your DVD Burner drive. Hit the button at the bottom, sit back and wait.

Now, for a DVD9 follow the first set of instructions above (Mode>ISO>Read). When this is done you need to mount the image, I use Daemon Tools. Then open DVD Shrink and burn as you normally would.

DVD-9 is all I have worked with. I have just been using the steps provided in the guide on this site and using just Shrink.

From the AD DVD Shrink Guide:

To make things easier, we will use DVD Shrink for ripping the DVD as well as transcoding its material. In some rare occassions DVD Shrink can't rip the disc correctly -- if you encounter such problems, rip the DVD to your HDD first by using DVD Decrypter as described in beginning of this guide and process the material from the HDD instead of DVD.

Yeah but I don't have problems while ripping I have problems while it is burning so I didn't figure it was a problem with ripping.

Right, but in order to get a "good burn" you need a good rip. I am not saying this will 100% work, just a suggestion to try. I have over a 100 backup's. have made maybe a half-dozen coasters; total. I personaly use CloneDVD, I like being able to remove content and it seams to burn well for me, but I have used shrink with no problems either. Anyway, give it a shot, what's the worst that can happen, your backup won't play?????

Here my normal method.
ISO Read (Rip to Hard Drive)with DVD Decrypter
Right click the ISO file on the drive and select "Open with Shrink"
Backup to Harddrive save as ISO. (I usually batch encode 2 to 6 at a time)
Then Burn with DVD Decrypter...I never use Nero....

Again what are the errors you get on the "bad" burns? Plus a Nero Log will help....just don't post the serial #...

Okay I tried to do it as you said by ripping with Decrypter, saving to HDD with Shrink and then burning with Decrypter and I get this ...

Set burn speed at 4x.

Set backup target at 4360:

Open up dvd shrink/Edit/Preferences/Click on dvd-5/scroll till custom/enter 4360 next to custom/click ok and your new target is set. This keeps the burn from reaching the outer edge. Now you will have to change it for dual layer media, but nero6 may have trouble with dual layer backing up.

This log looked like the burn failed towards the end of your backup so that target should help. Your drive recognized the SonyD11 media, firmware update may or may not help, but always good to keep that update site bookmarked for future problems.Slow down that burn speed.

Those sonyD11 are pretty good, but I avoid them because spindles of Yuden000-T02 are on the japanese spindles. SonyD11 are the taiwanese +1x-8x. Look those wrappers over carefully for the japanese discs.

For stand alone compatability:
Definitely try booktyping with your rebadged lite-on, sony dru 710. It just may take care of that issue. Lite-on has a booktyping utility that also works on the sony that are re-badged liteys. Check it out here:

http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm

Dvd shrink has a box you can try in the backup options/burnsettings/ that says booktype to dvd-rom. Try ticking it.It shouldn't hurt. The plus format is the only format that can be booktyped.

Is this Nero log a burn on the fly job? If so I'd add more memory.

Where's our resident Nero log expert? He'll have more luck with this than me! I'd try some other discs if you have them....see if those fail at the same point as well.

Update your firmware. Yours is BY03 and the latest is BYX4 http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1917

I also agree with saugmon about booktyping your DVD+R media to dvd-rom for best compatability with stand alone dvd players. Since your sony is a rebadged lite-on the lite-on booktype utility should do the job. Here's a link to the utility and there is also a link to a usage guide there too. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441

Shutdown some background programs.

Have you defragmented your hdd and removed adware/spyware lately? The media you are useing is usually ok but you might try a small batch of good quality media such as verbatum, taiyo yuden, maxell, fuji (made in japan), or sony (made in japan).

No it doesn't finish burning. The discs go full but there is no info or anything on them.

As for the memory, I have everything closed when it runs. That is what the program seems to take up. At least all the other programs are ones that need to stay running and are SYSTEM programs.

This is too low, you really need to upgrade/add more RAM (at least another 256MB or 512MB of RAM) to boost up your CPU. To free up more memory, go to START, RUN and type "msconfig", click on STARTUP and disable/uncheck any running programs at startup that you don't need at this moment. Another way is "ctrl+alt+del" and you need to end the "processes" on any running programs/applications that you need it this time in prior to burning.

I don't like this kind of media. I'm not saying Made In Taiwan is bad, but I prefer and highly recommend using only Taiyo Yuden (Yuden media is also the FUJI & SONY DVD+R "Made In Japan" only), Verbatim (MCC003 & MCC004 only) and Maxell (Made In Japan.)

Your Sony burner doesn't like the media you're using. Again, look at above reply about high quality media.

@slosten,

Looks like you need some "book typing" procedures and a few other things to be taken care of in order for you to have a successfully burned and able to play on any of your dvd players. Below are some very useful tools and guides that you might need to make good notes of it, so I highly recommend you save or print out this instructions for future references.

Here http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_utility.asp is the Lite-On Book Type Utility (version 1.3.5) -- this may help you to book type all your DVD+R/DVD+R DL/DVD+RW media into DVD-ROM, so it'll be more easier on any of your stand alone dvd players. And here http://www.k-probe.com/kprobe-bitsetting-booktype.php is the "instructions" to follow.

((NOTE: in prior to ?decrypt or rip? the original movie, take a few seconds to check the few following ?settings? on DVD Decrypter.))

** open up DVD Decrypter, go to Tools, and Settings
** at General ?Removal Method? arrow down to ?Aggressive?
** at I/O check ?Ignore Read Errors?
** at CSS check ?Brute Force ŕ I/O key exchange, On Failure: use key from another file [YES]
** at ISO Write Mode, check ?Enable BURN-Proof
** at ?ISO Read Mode? and ?File Mode? check/tick on all of the Remove, Ignore, Patch and Create MDS file

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm (the official best and or high quality media page, all about top notch media & crap media)

Here http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php is the Book Type instructions via DVD Decrypter. However, you "don't" need to use the (Chang for: Next Write), instead use only (Change for: DVD+R/DVD+R DL Media) or (Change for: DVD+R/DVD+R DL Media - EEPROM!). I've tested both and it successfully worked, meaning it did changed my DVD+R/DVD+R DL into DVD-ROM flawlessly.

**Here is how to "Book Type or Bitsettings" using both Nero Burning Rom**

01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings," set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every burning using a DVD+R/DVD+R DL/DVD+RW disc your Nero will automatically change the booktype into a DVD-ROM format.

((Here's how to "Book Type or Bitsettings" using Nero Express))

01) open up Nero StartSmart, then Nero Express
02) now click on "Copy Entire Disc"
03) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK", then "Exit" out. That's it... easy as sipping on some Corona. Again, now every time when you burn, Nero will automatically change your DVD+R/DVD+R DL/DVD+RW into a DVD-ROM in prior to the actual burning process.

Basically, you only need to set the "book type setting" on Nero once. So, if you book type it with Nero Burning Rom already then you don't need to do it again on Nero Express or vice versa.

**NOTE: I highly recommend using authentic Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell (Made In Japan) media only, when it comes to dvd burning.

Enjoyed it.... and happy burning..!!

Well I was finally able to backup my Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. However, I did it two different ways. First I tried to do the DVD Decrypter to the DVD Shrink ISO then back to Decrypter and I expierienced alot of pixelation. Then I went with ANYDVD and Shrink to burn and have gone halfway through the movie with no problems. Could this be my discs (Sony DVD+R's from Taiwan) or the burn process I used?

Also on the next movie I am trying to backup, Donnie Brasco, I see this...

Can I remove one of those groups of English or will it affect my sound in a certain portion of the movie?

I only tick AC3 5.1CH English only. I untick the rest and have no audio trouble of any kind.

I haven't done that title,but I see there are 2 separate AC3 5.1CH English sound streams. I'd definitely untick both AC2 streams.

If you re-author,Keep the top, #2 AC3 5.1 channel and untick the #6 AC3 5.1.

Entire disc, then you may need both of them.

This is where RW media would come in handy, then you can try it both ways and listen to the difference.

Did you autoburn with Nero?

You can preview each audio stream by right clicking the video preview box in the lower left of Shrink (while previewing the movie) and choose each one to see if it is needed. Most likely the last 2 are Director's Commentaries....

As for your pixellation...could be standalone compatibility...or too much compression....my OZ discs some are compressed near 50% and glitch out like crazy on one of my players, but play fine on the others.
