I just got a new external burner for my laptop, and I use another external burner to makes backups. I use the slower burner to use as the one with the movie, and the newwer faster one as the real burner. Now all of a sudden since I have got this new burner, it will read the dvd just fine, then with I got to re-author then click on BACKUP, shrink will just freeze up on me.

Anyone have any ideas why this happens all the time?

Thanks

If I'm understanding you correctly, it looks like you are first reading the movie with one drive and then another for the backup process.

This would involve disconnecting the first drive and then reconnecting the second. Shrink will not allow this. You need to use one drive only for the entire process.

If you want to use the second drive to burn with you need to use the first drive to complete the Shrink process entirely, setting your hard drive as the target. Once that is complete, you can reconnect the new burner and then use whatever burning program you are using. You could even open the files in Shrink (Open Files) and let it open the burning program for you as you are apparently doing now.

They are both connected via USB, and are both turned on before I open shrink. I never disconnect either one.

Sorry I didn't explain that well enough.

Any ideas?

I doubt Shrink will work on two USB connections like it does when you have two drives connected on the IDE buss (internally).

I would set the target as the HDD and let Shrink encode to that. Once that is completed, Close Shrink and open your burning program. Burn the files from your HDD using the second drive.

That may seem longer because you have to manually open the burning program after using Shrink. This is how I normally burn....I use a ripping program first, complete that, then open the burning program to finish the movie.

I have Nero, but I have no idea how to burn it through that. Any ideas? I just usually let DVD Shrink do it by setting it "burn with nero".

Thanks

I can post a miniguide for Nero Express or Nero Burning ROM. Can you tell me what you have? If you have the full version, it will come with both. I don't know what you may have though.

Some versions, like the ones that come as included software with a new burner may have Express only.

You could always complete the rip and then close and reopen Shrink, this time setting the target device to burn with Nero:

Rip with Shrink setting the target to a HDD folder.

Once that is completed, close then re-open Shrink.

Use "Open Files" to find the ripped files.

Select "Backup!".

Set the target as your burner and burn with Nero.

Shrink will re-encode again though so it adds more time.

Using Nero is easy and only takes a minute to set up.
You have more control over the process doing it this way as well, especially with Nero Burning ROM.

I have Nero 6 Ultra Edition, full verison. I know how to rip a movie with shrink and have it saved to my HDD, but then I just am not familiar on how to then open up Nero and burn it through that.

Thanks for your help!

fasfrank,

You said you usually save your to HD first then rip them (if I understood you correctly) - just out of curiosity - do you find you have less "troublesome issues" doing it that way ?

I have seen posts here and there where some members feel the shorter processes cause them more issues.

I use generally use Shrink with Nero set to open automatically unless I think there may be a problem then I would do the burn manually. Either way works. A person should know how to do a burn with Nero Burning ROM if you own it though. That's just my opinion though.

This is what I usually do with Burning ROM:

Before I open Nero, I finish ripping the movie with Shrink. I make a folder on my desktop and use that for Shrink's output. For this post I'm using a folder I named "Sahara", which is the name of the movie I used.

Open Nero Burning ROM. Select DVD in the upper left and then select the DVD-Video icon below that. Keep the rest looking just like this:

Next, select the "New" button in the upper right. This opens the browser/compilation window. I put my folder on the desktop so I'm going to browse for the folder there:

The next step is to open the folder and find the VIDEO_TS folder inside. Opening it reveals the video files over on the right:

To get the video files into the compilation area, right click any of the video files. This opens a menu. Select "Select All".

Repeat this process, this time selecting "Copy to Compilation":

All the selected files now appear in the compilation area:

Make sure your burner is selected, upper right. Now would be a good time to put a blank DVD in the burner and let it get spun up.

Click the disc and match icon to open the burn settings menu:

On this page set it up like this for a 4X burn. Your blank must be in your burner for the Nero speed setting menu to work correctly:

Once everything is set, select Burn at the upper right to start the process.

That is the basics for this Nero feature. Explore some of the other menu tabs and be sure to try a simulation.
Burn logs are always saved by Nero in your Program Files/Ahead/Nero/neroHistory.log folder. At the end of the burn you can save another or print one out if you like.

Be sure to give Nero enough time to complete each step. It takes the program a few moments to figure out it's done burning, for example.

One other note, if you look at the lower right corner of some of the images, you will see my DVD5 size as 4483MB. I use a larger number in Shrink so my file size is a bit larger. The general consensus is to set Shrink to around 4300 MB. I use a larger number for less compression and don't have a problem with it. I use Taiyo Yuden 8X -R media which works fine for me at this setting. I guess I'm living on the edge...

When I use my Shrink w/ Nero I just check a box and it burns immediately after the decoding process - so many different ways to utilize these programs ... wonder if Nero BURNING ROM is the same as what my OEM suite is

More than likely. Open it and see if it looks like the screenshots. Some OEMs only include Express which does the same thing as Burning ROM with a simpler user interface.

One of the main reasons to open Nero as I've shown is to perform a simulated burn. This can be helpful if you are not sure what you are going to try will work. A simulated burn also generates a log file which provides lots of information. Very handy especially if the simulation fails.

I do a simulated burn if I install a new drive or after a Nero update. I usually run the simulation at the maximum speed. Taiyo Yuden 8X -Rs will show a max speed of 12X but mine fail if I burn that fast. I usually burn a 4X though. Simulating at 12X finishes faster and works the system a bit harder.

I think I do have that part of it then - because when I am doing other types of video editing and dont deal with shrink - my info is alot more involved in Nero - including the log files you mention ... I think my Nero does alot more than I have come close to actually utilizing as of yet ... I might start using recode2 also

just a note. in my experience of usb enclosures so far, the hard disc or optical drive with an enclosure has to be set to Master, so you can't usuall have 2 enclosures at same time. not sure if ALL enclosures are like that tho, ie it's not the same as internal IDE controllers where you can have master/slave

You think I just open one of the drives up and chave it then? But what would I chage it too? Both slave? Since the cd drive in my laptop is master, right?

no. what i'm saying is, as far as i'm aware, the way USB enclosures work is that a drive inside one has to be set to Master ONLY. and i also think you can't have two working at the same time. that's true of my setup, just not sure if that applies to ALL other USB enclosures out there (mine are Belkin). haven't got burner pc on at the moment so i can't check, but it's certainly not worked with both switched on, before

So opening them both up and putting them on slave won't do anything? It works SOMETIMES when I have both on, but then most of the time it will freez up on me.

No, has to be set to master. The lockups show you can't have both on at same time then

well DARN! I dont even remember what I put them on when I did install them, but I guess it doesn't matter either why b/c all I have heard is that you can't have both on at the same time regardless of what is masteror slave. Correct?

re two on at the same time, es that's what i think. however i stress that each one has to be set to MASTER regardless...

I use 2 burners using shrink and DVD Decrypter.download decrypter if you don't have it first.1 close decrypter, open shrink and encode movie.select backup.when that opens select iso and burn with DVD Decrypter in firstbox, your hd in second box.when movie is finished writing to hd,decrypter will open automatically and start burning if you have a blank disc in dest.drive.If it does,nt then your slaves may not be set correctly.

If I am using 2 external burners, which one should be what, as in master and slave? Both are burners, but I use the faster one as the burner, and the slower one as just encoding.

Thanks

i've just switched both my USB burners on, and at the moment both are present; i'd love to be proved wrong about being able to use more than one at once as obviously it would be great......
