The color of the disk started to change in a week. The movie now skips and stops. Can someone tell me if it's the burner or the media.

is that the underside of the disc or the top? i really hope it's not the bottom since it's not a good idea to WRITE w/ a sharpie on the bottom~ LOL

but, it DOES look scratched...

what kind of media IS IT?

I wrote it on the top of the disk. What's a sharpie? I use the marker. The problem is not a scratch or pen(sharpie you call it). I don't know the brand.

ok a "Sharpie" is a permanent marker brand over here, looks like that is what you used to write on TOP of this particular disc of yours...ok, regardless of the "brand" of disc, run your disc through a dvd identifier program such as:

http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

or

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

and give me the media ID coding on it, i have a feeling it's just a poor quality disc, hence your issues with it skipping/not playing/stopping as you stated initially~ :)

for YOUR sake, i hope it's not CMC MAG manufactured or even WORSE~ :(

It's probably not teh brand then. If the top is that scratched up I would think that the bottom is jsut as scratched. Is this color change on the top side or bottom?

uhm...ok, if you feel that you got a "crap brand" as you stated, go with Verbatim... :) i was just curious as to what manufacturer made this "problematic" disc that you posted up on here, that's all` :)
the dvd identifier programs i gave you links to above will tell me that information i requested...

CMC MAG is a manufacturer, one of THE largest, if not THE largest media suppliers in the world, it stands for CMC Magnetics Corp., they might be one of the biggest manufacturers, but i have PERSONALLY found the quality on their discs to be subpar, nothing compared to the quality of Verbatim "MCC" coded discs or Taiyo Yudens~ do what you need to do, just trying to offer you some assistance here~

To answer your first question... yes, very much so. I wouldn't think a color change on the top would affect anything ,of course I AM an absolute idiot, so who knows. I have a Lite-On, it works great. I got it for 50 bucks w/ Nero. The new Sonys are just liteys with the soy name so they can charge you a bunch more. Another thing is OEM and retail. OEM is jsut the drive, alone. Retail gives you a bunch of crap software you don't really need, unless it's Nero.

Holy moly! That's one huge pic of a horendously ugly backup!

Are you sure the DVD-RW drive damaged this or maybe your stand alone player?

I'd like to see what the bottom/dye side looks like.

I'll take my $40 benq 1620 an 1640 drives anyday. Excellent booktyping capable writers. I've got 3 benqs, and out of a total of 6 DVD-RW drives, they are absolutely phenomenal.Standalones love my booktyped backups.

Plextor is the top dog,but some of their budgeted drives are re-badged benqs. So are some of the newer phillips drives. This says something about the quality of benq drives!A great burner for a sweet price.

Well...whether it's a coaster or not is really jsut a matter of will it play? I mean it's been scratched to hell but if you can still play it then who cars.

I order 300pack verbatim. Was this a relly stupid bad idea????? Cause i don't want to replace all my movies when blu-ray or hd-disk comes out. So was this waste of money?

No, Verbatim is top quality. I blow through a 300 pack in a several months, some ppl here faster than that. Blu Ray players are near the thousands, and the disk are just too expensive to use as backups. I haven't even seen a blu ray, recorder, so I think it's safe to assume blu-Ray and HD DVD are several years away. Remember when DVDs first came out? No one even knew how to burn them.

nothing wrong w/ Verbatim rihgt682...no need to worry about blu ray and hd-dvd for now...the recorders for these bad boi discs are approx. $1,000 US dollars, nothing i would invest in anytime soon~ :)

i HAVE gone through 300 pack in less than a month before, but i have slowed down tremendously as of late~ hehe :)

Nope, you got the crappier of the bunch. +8x cmags! I've got no issues of burning cmags, but do run into playback trouble. Keep the backup target about 4300 mbs and a slow burn. You can still have playback issues at that reduced backup target.

Optodisc: Probably a worse quality manufacturer than cmags.C-mags are bad enough, unfortunantly there's a whole lot more worse media than them.

Edit: Mcc-003 is excellent high quality media. Some of the best out there with metal azo dye, just like the taiyo yudens.
