ok you can either delve thru all the posts looking for types of media to use but i am hoping to start just one here that can be compiled fully ..wat u think?
ok i have a sony 500au
i have used.
datawrite dvd-r 4x (with movies and ps2 games without problems)
zero defex xtreme purple dvd-r 4x (movies no problems havent tested ps2)
please feel free to add yours

I have a Sony DRU500-A and I have used Verbatim DVD+Rs, Verbatim DVD+RWs, and insite's DVD-Rs with absolutely NO problems. I am considering DVDPro's DVD-Rs for my next batch. Has anyone tried these on the DRU-500? Magnavox stand alone players don't see to like the +Rs but the work fine with the -Rs and my JVC loves them all!

I have the Sony 500 UL (firewire) and have used without problem the following:
TDk 2x DVD-R
Ritek Silver/Purple DVD-R
Sony +R (of course!)
got Ritek at lowest price (that I Found ! ) at

I use Verbatim for ps2 games and have never had a problem (verbatim is the best Higest ToC level)
I also use Imation on ps2
and I have used pioneer as well and they work too
as for movies I have only used verbatim and they worked

May I take a minute to end all of this argument and madness. You all really need to pay attention to what I am about to say, because I have devoted 2 and a half years into DVD burning. 2 years just studying about it and 6 months actually doing it. The burner you need to have is a Sony DRU-500A + & - format burner. NOTE: this only applies to copying DVD movies (not games etc.) The standard recordable and most affordable media is the 4.7 GB +R recordable discs. (NOTE: you may use DVD+RW also if you choose to record over your movies with other movies.) I have over 10 DVD players in my house and I have successfully gotten my DVD movies to play on all of them except for one and I took it back because it was defective (it was a Philips DFS 1600 DVD player). Ok, the standard program of choice is DVD X Copy v 1.3, and do be sure you have a nice, fast computer with enough RAM and hard drive space, I don't want a lot of emails from some dingbat saying he/she can't get it to work when all they have is a Pentium 133 with 32 MB hard drive space, that just won't cut it!! The standard OS of choice is Windows XP Professional Corporate edition that has been cracked and has service pack 1 installed and all the updates installed. When you have all of this in order, then it is time for you to proceed. Next step after you are running DVD X Copy is be sure you have both a DVD player and a DVD burner installed into your tower, (NOT EXTERNAL!!!). This will ensure that you have plenty of buffer and you don't get underrun errors, besides, DVD X Copy will not work otherwise - so there! Make sure your system is not cluttered up with so much crap that you don't have any swap file room! Now, I think you are ready to proceed. You have your original copy of your movie in your DVD player, you have your DVD+R recordable media in your Sony burner, now make sure you have DVD X Copy set to burn in "UDF" mode, this makes your DVD movies more compatible with a wider range of players. OK - Ready - Rip & Burn, baby!!

Have had all sorts of problems with 'CHOICE' DVD-R's inc crashing, unable to format for a dump backup, and reading. will not use them again. (DVD Pioneer A04) FWS and Infiniti are fine. Took a CHOICE disc into John Lewis and tried it in various DVD players, would not play on any, yet is OK on PC

but the whole point of this thread is to determine what MEDIA (dvd discs) work without problems ;)

Well, my point is that I have found that any +R media works just fine for copying movies, even +RW, I have not found one that will not work. I have also found that -R's and -RW's do not work well for copying movies.

... and may of us (myself included) have found that a good DVD-R disc beats a good DVD+R disc in the majority of readers, be they standalones, ROMs or consoles.
And perhaps newbies should show a little respect before ranting off on a forum like this ;)
Good media types, whether it be +R or -R, come down to the following:
GOOD:
Mitsubishi (Verbatim)
TDK
Ritek
OKAY:
Prodisc
Some Princo (varies from batch to batch)
GDS (Gigastorage)
CMC
BAD:
Vivastar
Most Princo
Anything with a counterfeit lead-in.
Most of these only apply to -R. It is not true to say that +R is more affordable than -R, the reverse is true. -R is the official standard, +R is an unofficial fudge designed by Sony and Philips to carve up the market for themselves.

Well, please bestow upon me your advice and knowledge. I tried -R's and it was a disaster, however I did not realize that there were -R's that have a counterfeit lead-in. Please expound on this and let me know. +R's have worked for me and -R's have not, that is the skinny.

thanks to every1 who has made a worthy contribution to the thread, and as far as i was aware it was common knowledge -R is better for standalone dvd players and PS2 (however benjamin is all knowing ;)

It WOULD be nice to get a compiled list of media that burns well and their speeds. Hopefully this thread will eventually be complete.
I have a Pioneer A05 DVD-RW with fw 1.21.
Ritek G03 1x Media (from meritline.com) burned at 1x only works perfectly fine on my ps2 and sony & apex dvd players. 100 out of 100 burned successfully.
Ritek G04 4x Media (from shop4tech.com)
burned at 4x works perfectly fine on my ps2 and sony & apex dvd players. 25 out of 25 burned successfully.
100 pack DVD-R Lead Data (purchased from allmediaoutlet.com) came in two separate cake boxes of 50 each.
First batch of 50 had Lead In data "SONY" and burned at 2x. It plays perfectly on my ps2 and sony & apex dvd players. Burned 10 out of 10 successfully.
Second batch of 50 had Lead In data "LEAD DATA" and burned at only 1x. It plays perfectly on my ps2 and sony & apex dvd players. However, I burned 10 and only had 7 successful burns. 3 out of 10 so far that I've tried are now coasters.
I hope this helps when deciding on which media to buy. If anyone's tried princo brand media, I'd like to know how those turn out. I'm interested in cheap 1x media that can burn 2x on my PioA05 and work on my ps2 and dvd players.

Benjimin, thanks for your advice! I just received my sony external today and hooked it up to an older machine running win xp pro. My first try using dvdxcopy 1.4 worked great with Sony dvd+rw media..played on my pc and my sony dvd player. I'm curious as to what +r or -r media will work in my burner as well as my dvd player. Any thoughts Ben?

Great!!! I am so glad I could help out, yes I agree, that is a great combo of burner and software. I have found that Maxell single sided DVD's 4.7 gb +R format work very well, and can be purchased at Sam's club at $17.50 for a 10-pack, no failures with these so far. Fugifilm is good too, I can get them at $10.00 for a 10-pack (+R 4.7 single sided). Tried -R's one time and had 2 fail out of 2, so I don't recommend this format. Sony DVD+RW works well when copying movies also and will play in the widest range of stand-alone DVD players.

Taking the voyage into DVD authoring.
My first test was on a memorex, single sided, version 2.0 dvd-R. Movie played perfectly in my JVC XV-SA70 until track 13, then it began to fragment with video distortion and audio chopping. I put this same dvd-r in my second player (Onkyo DV-s939) and it played fine, until around track 4 or 5 where it began to stutter, but with no video distortion.
I re-encoded AND reburned the same movie onto a dvd+r of the same brand/version and it played perfectly in the JVC but all the onkyo said was "Disc error". :(
Both dvd-players are past their return date and i just bought the dru-500ax. So i'm thinking that i need to buy better media. Since the general opinion in this forum is that dvd-R's are very universal in working with standalone dvd-players, and my dvd-r did play in both, just went choppy after awhile, what are some of the higher end dvd-r manufacts?
I remember when i first started burning CD-s way back when, TDK discs were very temperature sensitive in that when they were cold, they would skip...a lot. I switched to sony cd-rs and not one skip since.

Try Pioneer DVD-R, Mitsui Gold DVD-R, and I also use Universal DVD-R from dvd-r.safewebshop Pioneer and Mitsui is Best quality media but they are expensive... i bet u can settle with Universal.

Yo I dunno what I got it was from PC CLUB/ www.pcclub.com but anyways I have a DRU500UL and I am 50 for 50 no problems at all. I have used DVD X COPY and also used INSTANT COPY. They use to be 39.99 for a 50 pack but they may have went back up and they where DVD-R :)

I dug out the manual on the Onkyo and it says this "You cannot play discs such as CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW,etc., even if the marks in the above table are labeled on those discs."
The marks "above" just say it can read cd-r(w), dvd-audio and dvd video.
Cannot play dvd-r discs...i dont know how far i want to trust this manual because it also said DVD's cannot be copied onto VHS tapes AND that i have gotten the memorex dvd-r media to play in it, just not well.

ehhh... Princo doesnt work very well... I suggest using Ritek or as Ultima said "Universal DVD-R from dvd-r.safewebshop ". Backed up perfectly for my PS2.

Right, i might try that since amazon says "1-2 weeks" before my sony dvd-r ships.
I also found on another forum on afterdawn that it may be the way i burned it.
I used smartripper/dvd2one/nero 5.5.10 which resulted in a perfect DVD+R for the JVC standalone and a disc error in the onkyo.
Same process with a DVD-R yielded distorted video on JVC and lockup on the onkyo.
Should i try a different burn process too?

I burnt a TDK DVD-R that will play in a Philips player, but not at all in an Aiwa player. Should I try another brand of DVD-R or will the Aiwa player not play anything?

Stay away from BulkPaq x2 these naff disc's were only 69p and they suck. Only around 50% of the disc's worked and on some of the disc's you could see defects in the dye!!!
